“Beautiful Majestic Hotel”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We had a excellent stay and a beautiful Hawaii experience staying at the Moana Surfrider.
The location is right on the doorstep of the waikki beach and out front you are on the main strip for all the shopping and restaurants. The rocking chairs out front and back of the hotel are just gorgeous to sit back and relax. The openness of the hotel with all the windows and doors letting all the breeze in lovely. The hotel has a real old wold charm but It can get quite busy with people coming and going but it all works well.
We stayed in a partial ocean view room which was very modern with a huge king bed and the best pillows I have ever slept on. The room had a little balcony to sit out on with a good view of waikkii and very sound proof at night. Buffet breatkfast was good not very big but probably enough mainly catered for the Japanese. The beach bar at night had entertainment and the Mai Tai's where yummy. The pool is very small for the size of the hotel but you have all the beach to swim.
All staff very friendly and helpful, especially Roxanne on the tour counter.
Overall a wonderful experience and highly recommend it for couples and families.

Room Tip: Part ocean view very good size room. The banyan rooms are small but old world charm.

Aloha Melinda,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are happy to hear that your stay at the Moana was enjoyable. As the first hotel built on Waikiki Beach, the Moana stands as a historic landmark, welcoming visitors to journey back in time to days gone by. We are proud to preserve the timeless beauty and grace that sets the “First Lady of Waikiki” apart from any neighboring Waikiki resort. It is wonderful that you were pleased with your room accommodations, especially the bedding and pillows of our Westin Heavenly Bed. We hope the moments you spent in the Banyan Courtyard listening to Hawaiian music with a mai tai in hand, created wonderful Moana Memories of your special stay in Hawaii. We appreciate your review and look forward to welcoming you back to the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa.

I had an excellent stay at the Moana Surfrider. They cater to your every whim, PLUS they have the premier spot on Waikiki Beach! The rocking chairs on the front porch are wonderful, and a great place to sit and relax while you watch everyone walking by. Thanks for a beautiful vacation, Moana Surfrider!

Aloha Pixie,
Mahalo for choosing to stay at the Moana. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Like you, many of our guests love the Moana’s unique location on Waikiki Beach – walk a few steps out of the lobby to reach the sands of Waikiki Beach or head out to Kalakaua Avenue to enjoy world-class shopping and dining. We hope that your time spent at the Moana, especially those relaxing days swaying back and forth in the rocking chairs on the veranda, created wonderful Moana Memories of your special stay in paradise. On your next visit, head to the Beach Bar in the Banyan Courtyard for a refreshing mai tai and ono pupus (delicious appetizers). Then, continue to relax the day away in the rocking chairs on the Ewa veranda. If you stay until late afternoon, you’ll have a great seat to witness an exhilarating Hawaiian sunset. We look forward to your next stay at the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa.
Thank you!

This hotel is superbly situated for the beach and the delights of the town. The tour advisor there is particularly helpful. The rooms are spacious and the beds are just so very comfortable. We loved the evenings by the banyan tree and recommend the restaurant overlooking the ocean. The hula dancing, the music, the sunset makes me wish to go back tomorrow.

Room Tip: We had a partial ocean view which was fine.

I chose this hotel to be right on the beach and it was great. The convenience of being able to walk out from my hotel on to the beach was what a vacation in Hawaii is all about. There where a lot of people in the parlor of the building and a saw at least 5 bride and grooms taking there pictures in the hall, so if your looking for isolation on the beach you probably should be on one of the other islands.

The room was clean and the view was beautiful. We stayed in a Diamond Deluxe Ocean room and the double bed was big and comfortable enough for two. The bathroom was a little small and had a little paint chipping from the humidity in the bathroom, so they definitely should upgrade the ventilation system there. I didn't hear any noise in the hall way or other rooms or from outside but then again I live on a busy street in San Francisco and around the corner from a fire station and we would get to our hotel room passed 10pm.

The only reason I didn't give them five stars is it was not a stay out of the ordinary and there was chipping of paint in the shower portion of the bathroom and the balcony outside. However I know that this is just worn out for legitimate reason(salt water from ocean and hot water from the shower). I just think it should however have regular maintenance. But hey its a big hotel, what do you expect.

Over all I would definitely recommend to stay here to any friend or family

Room Tip: Diamond Deluxe Ocean is the way to go. It's a splurge but, hey, how often do you get to take vac...

Aloha,
Thank you for your review. It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your accommodations in the Diamond Deluxe Ocean guestroom, especially the amazing views of Waikiki Beach and the comforts of restorative sleep in our Westin Heavenly Bed. The Moana’s unique location on Waikiki Beach is also one of our most well-loved features – you said it perfectly, the convenience of walking right out of the hotel lobby to the beach is what a Hawaiian vacation is all about! When you return, please consider spending the day under one of our private beach umbrellas. Enjoy the warm sun and cool island breeze while sipping on a refreshing cocktail! My wife and I visit this hotel every year, when we visit Hawaii, even if we stay somewhere else. Love to sit on the rocking chairs on front "lanai" during the day. More importantly, we favor the evenings and sunset under the huge banyon tree in the back patio, as a way to bring the day to a close.

The rooms here are nice, but the price is high for those who visit annually. However, if coming for a single visit would think that if such a visit is something you have dreamed about for years, then by all means splurge for a room here. We however come annually so to save money we stay elsewhere yet come here almost daily for the ambiance and general "feeling" that we love to experience here at the oldest hotel on Waikiki.

Room Tip: Depends on your desires. If you want to experience "old" Hawaii, stay in the Historic old...

Aloha Steven,
Thank you for visiting the Moana time and time again on your visits to Oahu. Spending the day with the “First Lady of Waikiki” is a special treat, as her historic ambiance and old-world charm set her apart from any neighboring Waikiki resort. Lounging in the rocking chairs around the front porte cochere, as well as in the Banyan Courtyard, are perfect ways to start and end a day in paradise. Come early for the sunrise, stay late for the sunset, and always have a refreshing cocktail in hand! We welcome you to stay with us as a guest at the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa on next year’s getaway to Hawaii.

I had so many fond memories of the Moana from days gone by that I wanted my daughter to share the magic of sitting under the banyan tree sipping a cocktail as the sun set.....we did just that and it was great - plus the bonus of live entertainment including a beautiful lady doing the hula. The place was packed but the service was great; cocktails perfect and atmosphere memorable. The old Hawaii still lives!

Aloha Patz,
Mahalo for sharing the beauty of the Moana with your daughter. We are thrilled that you both had the opportunity to enjoy, as you put it perfectly, the magic of sipping a refreshing cocktail under the shade of the iconic Banyan Tree. We are so glad to have helped you and your daughter create fond Moana Memories of your special holiday in paradise together. A mother-daughter trip to the Moana Lani Spa would be perfect for your next visit. Indulge in a healing lomi lomi treatment and spend the day within the spa’s oceanfront relaxation facilities, including dry sauna, detoxifying steam room, and whirlpool Jacuzzi. We look forward to your return to the “First Lady of Waikiki”.
Thank you!

Fantastic hotel with a true hawaiian feel. Position is excellent with being right in the middle of the main strip and perfect for being right on the beach. We had a partial ocean view room which is excactly what it is - partial. Staff are friendly and very helpful with anything you are after or wanting to do. Pool is great but thought it was bigger by their website. Quite small for the size of the hotel but being right on the beach you have that option to swim there as well. Disappointing that the pool closed at 6pm every night, should be 7 or 8pm at least for those that want a late afternoon swim in the pool and not the beach. Planning to go back to Waikiki at Christmas time and will be staying at the Surfrider again because of its location and so central.

Room Tip: If you go for a partial ocean view ask for one closest to the beach end meaning you will get more of...
