Server: How was your meal?
Me (stuffed and in front of empty dishes): Mind-blowing.
Where did this restaurant come from? We were on our last evening on our trip in Honolulu and we were looking for a slam-bang place to eat. This place is tucked in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center so we nearly missed it. On a hunch, we decided to pick Doraku. And boy, is this proof that hunches can be bang-on right.
This isn't a classical Japanese sushi restaurant with traditional sushi. This is modern Japanese fare with diverse influences, including Peruvian (hence the great ceviches). The sushi is all incredible, often to the point of being over-the-top, since they are so well garnished. Appetizers are amazing. Desserts are gloriously decadent. We are big cocktail fans, so I can say that the drinks are fantastic.
Service is friendly and efficient which is a plus, considering that the restaurant can be quite crowded (reservations are recommended). As an added bonus, there is also a happy hour (3-7 PM) so you can have great value for the quality of your meal.
For modern Japanese food, Doraku is among the best. I will definitely try their other restaurants as well.
