We had visited some "barge" casinos and with the exception of Tunica, were quite unimpressed. generally they were quite run-down and smelly.
We stopped at Amistar on the way to Dallas and were pleasantly surprised. It has been totally re-newed and is equal to any casino in Vegas or Tunica. Clean, Modern and well run. Newer slot machines for my wife and good table games with friendly dealers for me ! We only meant to have a short stop but wound up staying 5 hours. Very enjoyable and I actually won at the BlackJack table. (only a little, so dont get excited mr. IRS )

Based on the advertised music venue at the Ameristar, my wife and I decided to go there for New Year's Eve. Bad choice. The music was good, but the casino was totally unprepared for the crowd. As far as I could tell, there were no more than 3 bartenders working in their Bottleneck Blues Bar - servicing a crowd that had to have been over 500 - in a room designed to hold about 200. I was never able to even order a drink. The bartenders were so slow and had such "attitude", that at one point I thought the crowd was going to get ugly.
My advice - that I'll follow next year: Unless you like the "mosh/crush" thing, avoid places that don't take reservations on NYE.
