“Didn 't even stay!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2008

I don't even know if I can write a review because after checking in...we checked out. The room - downstairs, no elevator- was unacceptable by any standards. It was a non-smoking room that smelled exactly like smoke. The elevator issue was just an annoyance. We are strong enough to carry our luggage down a flight of stairs, but the smell was awful. They are remodeling, but apparently hadn't gotten to that room. The carpet was old, worn and purple. To be fair, they didn't argue with us at all. The desk clerk apologized and didn't try to charge us anything. Unfortunately, Walla Walla was completely booked with baseball tournaments and weddings so we drove to The Dalles in Oregon and returned home the next day, a day ahead of schedule. Basically, the room wasn't worth $50 a night much less the rate we would have been charged. I was so happy that we didn't need to stay - we would have been miserable.

This place is just off highway 12 and right next to the Best Western, just a few blocks from downtown. The rooms at the far end of the building are close to the street, so there's a little street noise, but the rooms are quiet. The common areas have some funky smells, but the rooms are of adequate size, clean and up-to-date. The breakfast room is tiny and offerings were a bit sketchy. It can be hard to find a place in Walla Walla in summer and fall, and this is a decent alternative to fancier places.

I was a little nervous about staying here because my husband and I like to stay in nice hotels when we travel, but this was the only hotel with availability when we booked. Fortunately, it was an adequate property with a good location. The lobby is well-maintained and the rooms are fine. Nothing special, but not awful either. We skipped the breakfast in the morning as it was barely continental, but luckily there are great places to eat in Walla Walla. We were able to walk from the hotel to anywhere we wanted to go downtown, which was nice because we could enjoy wine tastings and drinks with dinner and not worry about how to get home. Our friends were staying at the Marcus Whitman in a suite and were not overly impressed with it, so we felt fine about our stay at La Quinta. We ate at 26brix which was within walking distance and very good food (we had dinner there as well as brunch, which starts at 8:30am). I really liked staying right downtown, and if you are going to do serious wine tasting you will have to drive no matter where you stay. We did the historic homes walking tour which was a *wonderful* way to see the town and Saturday morning there is a small farmer's market that you can walk to from the hotel. We LOVED Walla Walla and had a just fine experience at La Quinta.

Thet La Quinta in Walla Walla, WA is located right off US-12, and 4 blocks from the quaint part of "downtown" W.W., so great location. My wife and I arrived around 2pm, but were allowed to checkin 1 hour early. Unfortunately we got to our room to find it had not been cleaned yet. The maids were pretty good about getting it cleaned over the next half hour.

The room was nonsmoking, but smelled moderately of smoke which had been attempted to cover up with lots of bad smelling deodorizer. We smelled deodorizer the rest of our stay and kept the window open whenever we were in (that was about the only was it was bearable). We asked about switching rooms when we first found our room still dirty, but the front desk said the hotel was full. We didn't try again.

A lamp in one corner of the room didn't work, even after we had a maid switch bulbs, so we had to move a floor lamp around the room, depending if we needed at the desk or by the side of the bed. The lamp on the other side of the bed burned out on our second and last planned night - we took it as a sign to be on our way the next day.

The room itself was a nice size - a king bed with room at the end for a desk, desk chair, and an arm chair. Free wifi was nice, but fairly slow. (I was able to download a short video, though.) The bed was very firm, but it didn't bother us (unlike some reviews I've read).

They have a nice looking pool and hot tub, which appears to originally have been outdoors, but now enclosed and attached to the hotel. Didn't try it out.

Breakfast, included, was continental + biscuits and gravy (not great, but edible). It's only served until 9 am.

I thought $80 for a La Quinta room was a fair value in Walla Walla, but this one was not up to standard. I expect a clean, working room even at a much cheaper hotel. To be fair, we didn't complain so we didn't give the management a chance to fix these multiple, small issues. But I would try Best Western across the street next time.

For my kids, I reserved here for the pool, which had a broken water heater. My kids swam to the point of hypothermia, and then got into the hot tub. Of course, the hot tub had a lukewarm temperature. The free breakfast was okay; we skipped the second day. Free Internet kept the older child busy.

I recently stayed for 3 nights while visiting friends in the area. The first room I was given was on the 1st floor which is more like a basement. I found it to be claustrophobic. I returned to the desk to request another floor. I was told the hotel was fully booked but after a brief hesitation I was moved to the 3rd floor. There is no elevator. That room was clean but smelled a little funny because the wall airconditioning unit was on full blast. Once I turned it off and opened the windows the odor disappeared and the room was fine.
