We wanted to visit someplace with historic value and interesting food, and the Whitehouse-Crawford fit the bill on both counts. We're sure to go back next time we're in Walla Walla.

We would recommend ordering a variety of items off the bar menu, as it's much more interesting than the mains (at least this was the case when we visited in April). Everything was fresh and innovative and delicious.

The restaurant location was extremely close to our hotel, which was an added bonus.

We were there on a slow night, in low season; the restaurant design would likely make for a noisy atmosphere if the room was filled, but we couldn't judge that.

Whitehouse-Crawford is a serious restaurant for a small town. The menu is short but seriously good; the wine list seriously lengthy; the space seriously vast; the cooking seriously skilful. Jamie Guerin was seriously down to work as we watched him from the chef's counter (recommended). The only thing not serious was the service, which was efficient and as friendly as the town with the reputation for being the friendliest in America. Seriously. Guerin knows his onions. Walla Walla's famous sweet onions come in a variety of ways. The best way to sample them is with the burger -- they come caramelised in the bun, plus fried on the side. Delicate shavings of sweet delight. And the burger? I have always thought the term 'gourmet burger' that gets bandied about so much these days is oxymoronic, but this one -- simply described as 'Burger' fits the bill. It is the best burger I have ever eaten. Seriously.

A large and airy dining room space is very welcoming. We sat at the counter so we could watch the chefs at work and chat with them. I was blown away with the burger (of all things!). In such a restaurant I would not usually order a burger, but I saw them preparing one and it looked amazing so had to try it. They grind their beef fresh so they are able to do a truly medium rare burger, which is difficult to find! It's served with cheddar, bacon, grilled onions and aioli sauce, and accompanied by the lightest airiest floured and flash fried onion rings. Simply amazing, and not to be missed if you are a burger person. The best burger I've had in many years!

Delicious food, creative and locally sourced! Excellent service! Huge wine and cocktail list. I usually prefer to sit at the bar, fun to chat with others about their wine adventures.
Take a minute to appreciate the building...old lumber mill that has been restored and maintained many charming features.

It took far too long for our dinners to be served. Two of the diners had fish, which was way overcooked. My meal was just lukewarm. The restaurant was not crowded, so I cannot figure out what went wrong. We will have to reconsider eating there again.
