I recently did a 9 day back-country in Yellowstone. Our second night was spent at Mallard Lake. This is one of the most beautiful place i have ever been. I am a well traveled Individual but Mallard lake is one of the most beautiful campsites I have ever stayed at. After a grueling 12 mile trek in past Fairy Falls and the Grand Prismatic, our group quickly jumped into the refreshing waters of Mallard Lake. When swam back across the lake and scrambled up back onto land. Exhausted we all changed out of our wet clothes and began to cook dinner. After dinner our group witnessed one the most spectacular sunsets in any of us had ever seen. Aside from the mosquitoes that cover the entire area of Yellowstone, this is truly one of the most spectacular places i have ever been.

“Good basic Yellowstone hike”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

A good basic hike if you are camping or staying the Old Faithful area and want to get away from the crowds and/or geysers.

Reviewed 30 April 2012

If you have more time to spent in Old Faithful area - this is one of the nicest trails you should try to hike. As always when hiking in Yellowstone - bring a LOT of water whit you.

“A great day hike from the Old Faithful geyser basin”
Reviewed 25 October 2003

Mallard Lake is a great dayhike (or run) if you are in the Old Faithful geyser basin area. The trail begins south of the main parking lot for Old Faithful Geyser--trail signs are present here also. Bears are present in the area as I evidenced scat and hair while I was running and hiking there frequently when I worked at Old Faithful this past summer (2003). Use common sense, travel with a partner, don't approach or feed wildlife of any sort, and read literature available at the visitor center from the rangers.

The round trip distance is about 7 miles, with an elevation gain near 1000' from 7100' at Old Faithful to over 8000' at the lake. The trail is well developed, rocky in places, and marked with orange metal tags occassionally. Fishing is allowed here, but not of much use as for some reason unknown to me, it's a "dead lake." Weather can be fickle and unpredicatable--it snowed on me here while camping overnight on June 24. Mosquitoes are BAD in mid-June to late July usually as I experienced. But they're bearable with the right attitude, clothing, repellant, etc.

Before the lake .1 or .2 miles, there is a trail option to continue onward (trail off to left as one approaches lake) to the Mallard Creek trailhead-a recommended option of about 12 miles round trip including a 2.5 mile road walk (or overgrown powerline ski trail) and a 2.5 mile trail walk back to Old Faithful from Biscuit Basin. The sights on either section are magnificent and unparalled in the immediate area of the geyser basin. Either way, camping is a great idea as is a day hike to get some great views, exercise, see some wildlife, and escape the crowds.

If 1000's of people are in the Old Faithful Lodge and Inn and walking around the geyser basin boardwalk, rest assured you'll only see a few people on this 7-12 mile route. I usually only saw 2-6 people each time I took this route, sometimes none! Enjoy and be safe.
