Stayed in this campground for one night, due to its central location for exploring Grand Loop Road. Guy that greeted us was friendly. Site was very small, and had NO shade. We were expected to pitch our tent on a bed of rocks, which made for a very uncomfortable night's sleep. Bathrooms were conveniently located and serviceable, and having a 5 minute walk to the river was great. Best saving grace of this campground was the great location and the low price. We would probably not stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to find a site with shade!!

Madison is about as good a location as you can get in Yellowstone. Just fifteen or twenty minutes south is Old Faithful and the other geyser areas, while the canyon is half an hour or so to the northeast, and Lamar Valley beyond that. West Yellowstone is twenty minutes or so to the west as well.
The campground itself is great. Each site is plenty spacious and most have at least some shade. There are no showers, but the bathrooms are clean.
Bears come through the area from time to time, and the park staff will remind you to keep a standard "clean" campsite: Nothing with an odor can remain outside of a hard-sided vehicle or the bear-proof containers at night. This policy can easily be followed, as every site has an individual container.

This campground was nice. We had a nice site within close proximity to the bathroom. Our RV is 30ft and it fit fine. Anything larger and it would've been tough. We wanted sites close to our friends but that didn't happen. Even though we got there early. It wasn't that big of a deal and we had fun anyway.

Right across from us was the river and we saw a herd of elk one evening. That was neat. In the national parks you can hunt for your own firewood (no cutting it down). We also burned buffalo chips. Hey why not..free :). Sounds gross but our teenage friends son picked them up and we didn't have to and they don't smell like poo when burning. Smells like pine needles. It was funny and a great experience. Wouldn't roast a marshmallow over it though. Eeewww!

We stayed 2 nights. Got pretty cold at night so didn't miss the air conditioning. I liked how close it was to start our day in Yellowstone. So close to the major stuff. We drove thru the other campgrounds but I like this one the best. LOVED LOVED LOVED Yellowstone. A trip my family will remember for a lifetime.

Spent 4 nights in three different campgrounds and this was our favorite. Near the Madison river, walking distance to some amazing views. Fly fishing only in the river but the sites had fire-pits and it was a real camping experience. Would pick here to stay again when we return.

This campground was clean with well-spaced campsites, leaving you feeling like you're not cramped in among the tents. The bathrooms were clean and dry, and the firewood (while expensive) was readily available- so was ice.
There are no showers on the campground- they're about a 20 minute drive away- but we didn't mind making the trip because the park is so scenic, it's not a hardship.

Elk walked right through out campsite on our first night, and there is fly-fishing (only) available on site.
There are lots of trees, but not a lot of shade- the trees are spaced out and skinny.
An amphitheatre holds church service on Sundays, if that interests you.

Altogether, it's a beautiful campground with the basics done right. You'll be surrounded by nature, but the mornings at that elevation can get chilly- dress warm at night!

Room Tip: Ask for a campsite on the outside of the loop. F loop was slightly more secluded than the others, it...

Before I got to the campgound I had read many reviews - love Trip Advisor! So, not to repeat what all have said - we had a great time - 4 nights in Madison campground. We didn't feel like we were on top of each other - I guess it depends on your camping experience, but we thought they were great sites. Clean restrooms (except for some icky campers). No showers or it would have a five rating. Plenty of space in the bear box - but many around us were in rv's so they didn't need one. Had a visit from bison - and elk by the river. we would stay here again - although I'd probably bring the motorhome. :)

Room Tip: Get into one of the back loops for optimum quiet - we were in F loop. (A, B, C, D, are in the front...

I had a short 2 night stay at this campground.

The tree's in the campground do not provide any shade, and the sites are very close together. This means, you are friends with your neighbor! Fortunately, we did have quiet and friendly neighbors. The bathrooms were close by, and water was available.

No showers. No shade. 2 nights is pretty much good enough.
