Stayed here 1 week before closing up for the winter.
very basic rooms, but clean. Be prepared no TV, no phone, very limited cell usage
Elk buggling outside our window one morning.
Resturant is OK, be prepared to wait, was very little else open during the last week of Sept.
Sleeping at 8200' was a challenge for us.

Pioneer Cabin - We were looking for a very inexpensive ($80) place to stay inside Yellowstone Park and this cabin worked for us. This was our third trip to Yellowstone. The first time we visited we stayed outside the park in Red Lodge, Montana. We spent too much time driving back and forth through the Lamar Valley to get to the heart of the park.

The second trip we stayed at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel. We loved staying at the hotel, but this third trip we needed to be on a budget, so we decided to forgo luxuries. We spent most of our time away from the lodging anyway. These cabins are old, but were clean, not spic and span clean, but clean. The best part is that they are very close to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. They are located in a very quiet area.

Finding good food in the area is a bit tough, but there is a little diner located within the grocery store with OK food.

Stay in the park, if you can. It is well worth it. Yellowstone is huge and with the wildlife along the road there is lots of stopping to gawk. It takes time to really see what is there. I recommend Park Ranger guided walks. They are very informative. Horseback riding is also great. We saw moose on one ride.

Yellowstone is such a beautiful park and ever changing. All three of our trips had different highlights, partly due to being there at different times of the year.

Do not even try to use the web site to make reservations. Call the 800 number and talk to a human. They are very helpful at getting you what you want. Do not get discouraged when you hear everything is booked. Keep calling back. You would be very surprised at how many reservations are cancelled. Many people book one year in advance and then figure out they can’t make the trip.

I would recommend these cabins to friends, but not without knowing what their expectations are. These cabins are not for everyone.

This is an old hotel, basic accomodations, but clean. Walls are thin so you hear a lot of noise from hallway and adjacent rooms. Be sure to ask for a room with a shower stall, unless you don't mind one with a tub and no shower. Price is not too bad, but I would probably stay in Gardiner instead of here next time if the price was a little less there. Its only about 5-10 minutes away. Hot tub cabin was pretty cool - expected it to be inside, but it was neat to be outside in your own private hot tub, looking up at the stars, with it 20 degrees outside. Nice little indoor cabin to change in and to run inside to dry off. I think most of the accomodations are very basic - except for Snow Lodge which is pretty new and has nicer rooms. One tip - if you are going in the winter, would recommend taking the risk to make reservations last minute to see if snow amounts are good - it was nice that it was above freezing when I was there, but snow was almost non existant at Mammoth, and less than 12" even in the parts of the park that get more snow. This is highly unusual for this time of year, and still had a great time, but would rather have saved the money and went another year when they had more snow. Ice skating area both here and at Snow Lodge was a joke.

The Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel is located about 5 miles inside yellowstone park. In the winter there are only two hotels in the park that are open: the Mammoth HS Hotel and the Lodge near Old Faithful. You can drive to the HS Hotel but need to take a snow coach or snowmobile to the lodge. Thus if driving into the park you really only have one choice. That being said, the hotel is still pretty nice. the lobby part of the building is newer. It is warm and inviting. There is a large fireplace surrounded by chairs to warm up in the morning or evening. The staff is pleasant, relaxed and helpful. the hotel wing was built in 1911 and it shows. the hallways are wide and the ceilings very tall. the floors are somewhat creaky and you can hear the people moving above you. the rooms are very clean and comfortable, if not a bit small. Some rooms have baths and some do not although the group baths are large and clean. We had a small bath in the room which was sufficient.

Across the street is the dining facillity. There is a cozy bar in there with a fireplace, lots of microbrews on tap and in bottles and a good wine selection. The food in the dining room is also quite good and fresh. We were worried that there would be all meat selections given the locale but were happy to find lots of vegetarian and fish choices as well. the breakfast buffet is good too.

Overall the hotel is not luxurious but if you are looking for luxury Yellowstone is probably not for you, The hotel is plenty comfortable for a nice stay and is certainly clean. This was a bit surprising given their monopoly. There are lots of attractions in close proximity including the boiling river (not to be missed but bring lots of warm clothes and a hat for the walk back), the teraces, beaver creak trail etc.

My husband and I, with our 30 year old son and his wife stayed in Yellowstone for 2 weeks during the Christmas of 2009 holidays. The primary purpose of our trip was to cross county ski. We spent part of the time at Mammoth and part at the Snow Lodge at Old Faithful. The Snow Lodge seemed "overdone" and crowded - like a "western theme" Disney type hotel. We were all so happy when we returned to the hotel at Mammoth. Yes its older and doesn't have the number of metal cut out bears gracing everything at Snow Lodge but it has a simple, plain, comfortable charm that felt wonderful to my family. We had a great time at both places - but we love the Mammoth Hotel.

We spent two nights in a Western cabin, with a direct pleasant view on the trees. The room was big and spotless with two confortable queen beds and a nice bathroom. We enjoyed having a coffee maker in the room and had breakfast looking at the woods before walking out into the chilly mornings. We felt welcome and cosy in the room.
We had dinner at the restaurant which was average (the cafeteria had just closed down for the season). The shops are ok.
We will definitely stay there again on our next trip as it is a nice central place at Yellowstone.
