Tucked in the northern part of Yellowstone NP, this valley is a great location to find and observe wildlife. We visited in May and were treated to bison, elk, grizzly bear and moose...all in one day! Some wildlife, like the elk and bison, venture fairly close to the road. Others will require a long lens or spotting scope to see clearly. Still, it was well worth getting up at 5 a.m. to get to the valley in time for sunrise. Be patient and watch for groups of spotters gathered along the road...you can bet they're looking at something interesting!

We took this drive as recommended to us. Supposedly it is a great place for viewing wildlife. Our trip was a little disappointing in that regard, but it is a very scenic drive. There are a lot of American Bison (Buffalo) to see in the valley, herds of hundreds of them. Being spring, we saw a number of Buffalo calves, which was delightful. We also saw a few Pronghorns, which are sort of like an Antelope. At one turnout we saw an Osprey sitting on a nest across the river, with the male bringing fish to the nest. This required binoculars, as did much of the wildlife, it was so far away. If you want wildlife pictures in Lamar Valley, you will need a camera with a tripod and a strong telephoto lens. I have the camera and tripod, but my lens was not powerful enough to get pictures in Lamar Valley, the animals are barely detectable in the pictures. Still in all it is a beautiful drive.

As suggested, almost all the animals in the park can be seen in this valley. It was a magical place from the bison to a moose and her big baby. What a beautiful Eden like spot.
