We visited the park in September and had planned to get to Hayden Valley to see the sunrise and hopefully see some wolves. We pulled into Grizzly Overlook which is a fabulous pull out S of Alum Creek and there were already a few cars parked in the twilight hours so I recommend you get there early if you are wanting to be there during the morning hours as it was full by 30 minutes past sunrise. We walked across the street and headed up a hill where some wolf watchers were and waited for sunrise and looked for wildlife. Some of the nice folks on the hill informed us they heard wolves earlier in the morning but we never saw them that day. We were rewarded with a spectacular sunrise that peeked in and out of layers of fog in the valley and lots of bison of course. As we drove through the rest of the valley throughout the rest of the day we appreciated the scenery around the river and all the birds in the area as well. Would recommend and agree with others that sunrise and sunset are best.

We saw a herd of bison grazing with their young in the meadow near the river from the turn off on the road. Some of the bulls were still fighting over females and gave quite a show. It is such a beautiful place. Further on we saw some prong horn and even a few mountain goats grazing by the side of the road. What a magical place!

We were in a traffic jam for about 20 minutes and thought it was construction. But no when we finally inched our way up - it was buffalo. Everywhere. They were crossing the street and walking around between cars so no one could move. We saw a lot in Lamar valley also but these were so close to the cars and were just so much fun to watch. They were even walking through the parking lot at one of the pull outs. This was our best buffalo siting by far.

Bison were everywhere in this valley in the middle of the day. It is so beautiful here, and it makes the drive to the Mud Volcanoes that much more fun!

This was our 2nd favorite spot after the Lamar Valley. We saw a number of bears, both black and grizzly, as well as wolves, and the plentiful bison and elk. There was also a beautiful Great Blue Heron posing wonderfully for photos in a pond adjacent to the roadway. Another great place for binoculars, a spotting scope, or telephoto lens.
