Not easy to come down, and even worse going back up. But you are closer to the bottom of the Falls than on the north side, so worth it.

Coming to Yellowstone, one may probably wish to experience some tranquility, such as the meadows, valleys or simply meditate in the midst of its vastness.

So popping by the falls do provide one with a totally different experience and perspective of Yellowstone as well as photographic opportunity of another kind. Here, one will experience the sound, strength, and even the smell of the roaring and rushing waters at the various overlooks.

And if you are lucky, you may get to view a double rainbow. Enjoy!

Tip: Get a map of the car parks and the trails from the Visitor Center at Canyon Village. And do join in the Ranger's walk and talk; as they are very informative. Do note that such activities start at 9am in the summer. Provide around half an hour buffer time to obtain the map and get to the meeting point.

This trail mirrors a route used years ago to bring people to a view point at the base of the falls. Uncle Tom would ferry people across the river and use ropes etc to help get people below the falls. The rope system has been replaced by a long vertical staircase. We are in our 60's and did the hike-tough coming up-we took our time-brought water-well worth the effort.

As other reviewers warn, this is a difficult trek back up the hill. We're from Colorado and used to the altitude and it was surprisingly difficult. Nothing someone in good shape can't handle, just takes a little longer than expected. If you're up for it, it's the best view of the Lower Falls in the park and worth it.

The close up view of the fall is breathtaking. Going down was breeze and going up... well. let's just say I wish there was a breeze. :) You can make it just take your time and pay no attention to those that pass you... lol These are steel steps and they are steep, but it still easier then some of the trails with no stairs. We saw many people of all ages having no problem with the decent.
