“Sierra Foothills Charm, "Doe's Cottage"”
Reviewed 11 March 2010

My husband and I needed to spend a few days in the town of Mariposa and decided that it would give us an opportunity to spend some time exploring the town while attending a weekend event. We decided to rent "Doe's Cottage" and not commute back to our home over an hour away (on mountain roads). The accommodation is a hidden Sierra treasure. The rental price is a bargain. The furnishings are charming and sweet. The sparkling kitchen has everything you need. The home was very clean and the bed was "snuggly" comfortable. The bedrooms are located on the opposite side away from the main street (more quiet!) I was concerned that the street would be too busy.................but traffic almost disappeared after 6pm. I mistakenly left my car interior light on and a neighbor walking by knocked on my door to let me know so that it wouldn't drain the car battery. She also wished me a nice weekend. Nice to feel that I was in a friendly neighborhood where the neighbors keep an eye on each other.
I enjoyed walking to the downtown area where there are good restaurants, coffee, local beer and wine tasting and a new bakery. The historic Mariposa County Courthouse and Museums were an added plus to my visit.
"Doe's Cottage" is great to stay at for any of the local events (Storytelling, Blues Festival...........) or you can drive to Yosemite National Park...............only 45 minutes away to it's entrance at Arch Rock.
It was wonderful to re discover the town of Mariposa.

Clouds Rest Cabin was wonderful and Foresta was the perfect base.

Clouds Rest Cabin lived up to all the lovely photos and reviews. It's well-maintained and very thoughtfully appointed. The kitchen was great and equipped with everything you'd need to cook for a tribe. For just two of us it was superb.

From Foresta, the scenic drive to Yosemite Valley takes only 10 minutes, so it was the perfect place to base ourselves for a long weekend exploring Yosemite.

The booking process was easy and well-administered. The driving directions, key location and other information we received in advance were clear and easy to follow, even though we arrived in the dark.

We arrived on Friday night, after a long drive from San Francisco and a 12 hour flight from Australia. After taking the turn off to Foresta, we had to stop to take photos of the beautiful sunset. The fire-ravaged landscape is stunning.

I've read a criticisms online of the landscape around Foresta claiming that it's ugly because of the fires. I disagree wholeheartedly. If you're coming to Yosemite, hopefully it's because you want to be impressed by the grandeur of nature - valleys carved by glaciers, towering trees, sheer cliffs... if you've got half a brain you'd realise that fire is part of this. It certainly is here in Australia. Seeing the dramatic swathes of burnt-out forest was a highlight for us.

Once you get down to Foresta itself it's delightful and green. Lovely trees, a burbling creek, lots of space between the houses, etc.

Cloud's Rest Cabin was great. I only wish I lived closer so I could return with a big group of friends for a week and book a couple of the adjacent properties as well.

The thoughtfulness with which the property had been prepared made such a difference to our stay - every room has thoughtful touches, from the decor in the bedroom to the kitchen & bathroom supplies to guidebooks, maps & DVDs in the living room. Thanks so much for a great stay!

We stayed at El Capitan View (3 adults and 2 small children) for 3 nights between Christmas and New Year. The cabin was beautifully clean and well kept with a wonderful view towards El Capitan in the distance. Doe, the owner was super helpful and rang the house a couple of times to make sure all was well and to see how much snow there had been and whether we needed them to come clear the driveway. The cabin was wonderfully warm too with a great gas fireplace that warmed the place up super quickly, we then stayed toasty warm with just the central heating!
We have stayed in Foresta once before during the summer and i can't say enthusiastically enough what a wonderful location it is. Quiet and away from all the crowds of Yosemite Valley itself but so super close that in 5 minutes you're at the first spectacular view point, then another 15 minutes you're at the visitor center.
We have stayed in a lot of vacation rentals and love the convenience of being able to make ourselves at home and do our own thing, especially with kids. This is certainly one of the nicest we've stayed at. Perhaps a little expensive in the holidays but everywhere is!!!

We stayed at Chris and Doe's El Cap View cabin the weekend of Thanksgiving 2009. The location is perfect inside the park in Foresta. The location is remote and quiet, but ten minutes from Yosemite Valley. It was a perfect location for daily activities in the valley and had all the amenities for nice dinners back at the house. Even one night BBQing in the snow.

Chris and Doe made it easy from first contact to when we left; there directions and suggestions (including Thanksgiving Dinner at the Awahnee, Excellent) were great. We will rent their place again; we have already made several personal referrals. Thanks Brian and Susan.

Found the El Capitan lodge on Yosemite vacations homes(4yosemite.com) from here I dealt with the owner Doe direct and she was great, replied all emails swiftly and all directions and instructions were sent in the post to us.
It was worth the long drive from Vegas when we saw the lodge and it's surroundings. Inside was stunning, well furnished and clean, and it was nice to eat traditional home cooked meals away from the hustle of Vegas, and kick back and relax with no one else in sight except the local wildlife.
We were a 15 minute drive to Yosemite valley, which was great after a long days hike to know that you would go back to your lodge sit on the patio and have an ice cold beer watching the sunset and the stars come out.
Thanks Doe for helping with a unforgetable vacation.

The owners have thought of everything here. Beautifully maintained and cared for, this home is in complete harmony with the majestic surroundings. It's the perfect place to reconnect with your family. Just to give you an idea of how thoughtful the owners are: when our trip was unfortunately cut short, we left a few things behind, including my son's lovey. The owners were incredibly kind and went out of their way to make sure boo bear made a swift return to our home back east. We can't wait to return and enjoy an extended stay!
