“Convenient home base in an INCREDIBLE national park”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

Our family of five, including three young teens, rented Yosemite Vista for 4 nights. The website is well developed and the booking process was very easy. When I decreased our rental from 5 to 4 nights, it was handled very professionally, and the penalty was waived.

Yosemite National Park is vast, so I don't know that there is any one super convenient place to stay. But with the exception of staying in the Valley, where you are at the foot of all the Valley sites, I found the Scenic Wonders location to be very convenient. I believe Yosemite West is the only enclave of private homes within the park. We were about 25 minutes from the Valley--I mean door to parking lot, and we saved a lot of money by staying here instead of getting two rooms at the Ahwahnee. I realized that you just have to be prepared to drive a lot if you want to see Yosemite. Places like Glacier Point (40 min) and Tuolomne Meadows (1.5 hrs) were unforgettable and so worthwhile -- once I got over the mental hurdle that after flying 6 hours and driving 4, we would have to do a lot of driving within Yosemite too. But wow, they were so worth the drive.

Yosemite Vista is a quaint, charming, three-bedroom, two-bath, A-frame house. It is, however, tired and old, and could really, really use a full renovation. The downstairs bathroom was very, very small. The loft bathroom was a little more spacious. Once we got there, most of the family agreed that I should've booked one of the newer homes. I opted for Yosemite Vista because it had a hot tub and washer and dryer. Both came in handy, but both again were old and tired. Views from the deck were nice, though lots of trees in the way. Most of the family said that the beds were very comfortable. We didn't do any serious cooking -- frozen pizzas and pasta -- so the basic kitchen was fine. Knives were very dull, but guess that is normal for a rental. They had plenty of extra towels, and when we ran out of paper towels, the office supplied extra ones right away.

So all in all, this was not the Four Seasons, but a very convenient home base for our Yosemite adventures. Having a kitchen was very helpful since we packed water bottles and lunches for each day's hikes/activities. We stopped by a grocery store on the way into Yosemite and also shopped at the Yosemite Village store after a day in the Valley. And overall, it was just nice to return to a home away from home.

Room Tip: Go for a newer house.

Stayed at Coyote Creek and found it very pleasant. That is when we actually found it! When you take the turn for Yosemite West you have a number of splits in the road with no signpost. We luckily took the right turns but still needed to ask another villa dwellers for directions to the office. Hint take all the turns to the right and the office is at the bottom of the hill. Our villa was nice and quiet but without views. It'd be interesting to see whether the Villas further back had good views. It looked like some may.
Other than that no problems at all and there was plenty of room and everything we needed for an excellent stay.
The villas are in a great location and equidistant to all the main areas. The valley, mariposa and Glacier Point are all about 30 minutes drive away and the villa is then a nice little retreat from the masses.
We felt like we were in a very good spot both for comfort and convenience.

We booked scenic wonders based on tripadvisor reviews, and what a disappointment! We stayed in the condo A110. First, this location is about a 45 minute drive from Yosemite Valley. Second, there was no a/c. The sliding glass door did have a screen and there was an oscillating fan on a stand provided, but it was still very stuffy. Third, the toilet had a small, constant run and when you turned on the faucet it ran like a gusher. These are inexpensive fixes and very disappointing since the state is in a drought. Fourth, the bathroom was very small and no air circulation. Fifth, there were no sheets provided for the pullout bed and we only had 2 towels in our room when our reservation was for 4. Basically, I would not recommend staying here! Do some research and find someplace else.

We stayed 3 nights in this 2-bedroom home and loved it. The full kitchen and gas grill were perfect for family meals. Great location with easy access to Glacier Point, the Valley and Mariposa Grove. We saw bears twice in the woods near this area and got lots of great pictures. The home is very nice with newer appliance and laundry.

The house was clean and well-equipped. I agree with a previous reviewer that the bedrooms could use more light. Also another reviewer stated the upstairs bedroom had twin beds, but there are two queen beds in the bedroom upstairs. The house very comfortably sleeps 8, not sure where the 9th would sleep except on the couch. I didn't look to see if it was a pull-out. The kitchen is well stocked with coffee. tea, some extra dry spices besides salt and pepper, sugar packets, and most utensils you need to cook. I had to ask for an extra drink pitcher, but it was no problem. The fridge does not have an ice maker, just two ice trays. We put a big bowl in the freezer so we could build up our ice supply.
The house is right next to the check in office, so it's not nestled away in the forest or anything. Yosemite National Park is huge, and the roads are very winding, so it takes time to get everywhere. All the other lodging I saw close to valley floor would not have accommodated our group (4 adults, 4 children). It is about a 25 minute drive to the valley floor parking area.
I always got a prompt return of emails and my questions answered when phoning ahead, so I felt the service was very good. We would definitely stay here again if we returned to Yosemite.

Room Tip: There is no a/c in the house, but all rooms have large fans. We happened to be in Yosemite when the...

Based on theTripadvisor.com reviews, we had high hopes for Scenic Wonders rentals at Yosemite. We were really disappointed. Yes, it is within the park, and that is a plus. But it is still quite a drive to get to the most popular areas of the park. (However, it is very convenient to Mariposa Grove and to Glacier Point -- both awesome places to go.)

The property is pretty old, probably built in the 1970's. The first unit we got, B111, a first floor unit, really showed its age. However, it was clean.

The biggest problem I had with this unit was that there were no windows, only a sliding door with a screen door that wouldn't lock (due to age and deterioration). It was only May, but it was quite warm, and there was no way I could sleep without a little air circulating, and the unlockable screen door was my only option. We knew there was no A/C, but we seriously didn't consider that there would be no A/C and NO WINDOWS! I can't imagine what that place would be like in July! And there is no ceiling fan or any kind of fan in that unit.

There was only 1 chair on the deck, so I asked for another. The very nice lady who handled our check-in gave us a chair from her unit because there was only one assigned to that unit. Apparently, each unit is individually owned, and the condition and amenities depend on who owns it and whether they care to keep it updated and maintained.

The second night there, we came back to our unit to find water in the bathroom that had leaked from the unit above it. The paint on the bathroom walls was bubbled out from all the leaking water. So they offered us another unit on the second floor and on the other side of the building. This unit was much nicer, not only because it was bigger, but because it had 2 ceiling fans and was obviously in much better shape with updated furniture, etc. Again, though, the only air from outside could come through the sliding screen door that AGAIN could not lock. But this didn't bother me as much since it was on the second floor. There were also 2 additional floor fans available in this unit. (There were actually two windows in the upstairs of this unit, but you couldn't reach them to open them in the cathedral ceiling!)

The people who operated this place on a daily basis were very nice and tried to help when we asked for something. I guess I would say that, depending on the unit you get, you might be happy with Scenic Wonders. But if you get a unit whose owner bought it to make money and then hasn't put anything into it since it was built, you will know it. We used to own a rental property on Hatteras Island, NC, and we were constantly maintaining it to keep it in top condition. We visited other properties, and it was always clear which owners cared enough to keep things in top shape and which ones didn't.

When we first saw our unit, I thought Scenic Wonders had managed to 'fix' the reviews on Trip Advisor. After seeing the second unit, it could be that the good reviews came from better units.

Also, when they say there are no restaurants or stores nearby, they aren't kidding. Not knowing Yosemite, we had planned to arrive, unpack, and then go to eat in the valley later that evening. But we arrived on Memorial Day, and the crowds in the valley were bad. It took us so long to figure out how to get to Scenic Wonders and negotiate the traffic, that we stayed in and ate the lunchmeat in our cooler for dinner. We couldn't handle the approximately hour drive it would have been just to get to the Yosemite Lodge area to find a restaurant and then drive back again after dinner. For the remainder of our stay, we planned it so our days ended in the valley, had dinner, and then came back to the condo. That seemed to work best. It may be 20 minutes to the valley floor, but in reality, it takes quite a bit longer to get to the village to pick up a tour, shop, or pick up a shuttle.

Our decision for the future is, plan to go to Yosemite when we can get a room in the Village or camp. Scenic Wonders isn't all that scenic or wonderful.

Room Tip: Don't accept B111. Ask for a room that has been kept in good repair, that has ceiling fans, win...

Stayed at Yoemite Vista and the interior is as presented, clean and pleasant. The bedrooms could use some more light. The pictures make the cabin seem more private than it is. View off deck is of a parking pad with several old cars and part of a truck. Keep your eyes out and up and look at the trees. Cabin behind as well.
We had rented a full size car at SFO and had trouble with the angle and steepness of driveway entrance. Scrapes front or rear despite many angled attempts and using wood to fill depression at bottom. Nice folks in adjacent cabin parked so we could drive thru a bit of woods and down their driveway. Would likey be okay with an SUV, or smaller car. We were told not to park on the street.
