“Took the tram...”

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
Reviewed 4 July 2014

We were on a "relax" day of our hiking trip, so we opted for the tram ride. It was interesting and informative, but we found that we got to see more and larger trees when we visited Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Glad we did it, but probably wouldn't do again if we went back.

We took the tram from Wawona visitors center to the grove which seemed to be the way to go as the parking is very limited at the grove and only a certain amount of vehicles are allowed to park close enough to the trees to hike around them. The trees are huge and the paths through and around the trees are kept up nicely. Wonderful hike but beware that the walk is a little steep in places, but if you have a strong, healthy person to push, a wheelchair could definitely make its way through the area. A lovely time to view God's creation. Amazing spectacle!

Seeing these giants up close should not be missed while in Yosemite. It is beautiful walking amongst these ancient giants. We took the shuttle from Wawona to get to the grove as the parking there was already full. It was an easy shuttle ride. You can walk as much or as little as you want. I would highly recommend continuing long enough to take in Grizzly Giant and the California tree. We had a couple of little ones with us, 3 and 6 and they did pretty good with all the walking. It is cool and shady in the grove too! Enjoy!

We arrived mid-day on a Monday. The parking attendants for the upper lot directed us to try the "small lot" adjacent to the entrance - or drive up to Wawona. We waited about 10 minutes at the small lot. The incoming shuttle dropped off some people to their cars and we were able to snag one of their spots - score! Shuttle bus picked us up there (so we didn't have to drive to Wawona). Not enough time to do the tram or upper grove - so, choose to do the lower grove by foot. We went in a counter clockwise direction on the lower loop - by the time we turned left by the tunnel tree, we were the only ones on the trail. Very peaceful. Seemed like most people walked to the tunnel tree and then turned around. Loop was not well marked - so take a map with you. Completed the lower loop trail in about an hour w/time for photos. Lower loop was flat in the middle, and then on a mild decline for the descent. The sequioas are amazing!

What a great memory I have of spending time with the Giant Sequoias. Their presence are so grand as they tower so high above you it makes you giddy. This is an outstanding place that reconnects you back to nature and gave me an appreciation of not only the giants of the forest but the smaller things as well.
