“Impressive trees, must-see”

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
Reviewed 6 August 2014

If you have just a little time there is a 1 mile hike to the Giant Grizzly Sequoia which gives you some information about the trees and wild fires etc. but this part is a little crowded in the summer. It is a good idea to bring a bit more time and step beyond that point. The trails are well paved but you will only seldom meet other people and have time and place to really enjoy the magnificent trees. The fall sequoia which was a tunnel is a great spot for children and adults to climb around a bit.

We arrived at 10.00 a.m so had to take the free shuttle from Wawona. We really appreciated taking the audio tour as it gave interesting background information whilst we were driven through the grove. The tour stops at two of the main highlights and we also noted the areas that we wanted to visit on foot afterwards. This was a wonderful experience and I'm sure we would want to visit it again, if we came back to this area.

Do not miss. Good walking trails in the lower grove.

Trails in parts of the upper grove need maintenance. Take the tram to the upper grove!

In the evening, it is very nice to walk there. The colors are nice and you can drive til the trailhead. During the day, you have to take the shuttle from Wawona Village.

This was the second visit for my wife and I but the first for our kids. We hiked to all of the named trees on the map. The trails are not always clear but you should be able to find them all. We were going to initially not do the top loop but changed our mind. The telescope tree is worth seeing. It's a fascinating forest and well worth seeing. The grades can be a little steep at times. Take water bottles. The fountain at the museum ran cold and was refeshing.

Parking - we arrived at the parking lot around 8:45 AM. The sign at the Wawona showed the parking lot full but only 15%-20% of the spaces were taken. We finished a little after noon. There were some spots open butthose were quickly taken as a number of cars were still pulling in.

One of the conservancy volunteers was at the museum. He told us that this was the last year for the tram tour. It appears that the paved paths are impacting the hydrology of the forest. They are supposed to be removing the pavement and redoing some of the paths in the future.
