Zion Canyon Campground
Reviewed 22 October 2013

Spent 2 nights here at the end of our 18 day camping tour of the Western US. As with everywhere else, the campsite is hard ground for the tents and very stony under foot. We had a riverside pitch and this was very pleasant. Cooler with the shade from the trees too. The campsite has use of the outdoor swimming pool - lovely to cool off in the heat of the day. The showers were not the cleanest but I have seen a lot worse. Many of the cubilcles have broken tiles. The tokens give you 6 minutes of hot water which I found to be more than enough time to have a good shower. However, the tokens took me ages to work out how insert as the gadget they are inserted into was above my eye height - not easy to do only by feel. Toilets were fine.

As others have said, the shuttle bus to Zion NP stop just outside the campsite. Due to the shut down, these were not running so can't comment on their frequency or efficiency. The views around the campsite are wonderful.

Stayed for 3 nights, great location within walking distance from Zion National Park main entrance. Good clean washrooms, stayed in an RV, good hook up facilities, they also give you shower tokens to use daily. Also within walking distance to town shuttle bus and various restaurants. We used the Zion Adventure outfitters across the road to get togged out for our walk down The Zion Narrows, amazing.........

We couldn't get into the Zion National Park Camp ground so this was the only other option available. The positives were being near the river which was very nice and the view of the mountains was stunning. The shuttle to to park was only a short distance from the camp ground. The downside is that the camp ground is very large and very run down. The wash rooms looked as if they could do with a really good clean and sinks were often blocked. The staff seemed over stressed and getting information about what was happening in the area was difficult. The other sites did not look that inviting so if we visit ZNP again we would definitely pre-book the camp ground in the park.

Room Tip: Try to get a site near the river because this is the best spot in the camp.

A couple things about this campground, first this is the only one in town, and the closest to ZNP with full service. We stayed 3 nights during a high demand time in a tent trailer.

The positives: The sight was nice size, level, well maintained, with a table, it was well shaded. The surrounding views of the mountains are beautiful, especially "The Watchman" mountain, gorgeous. The campground is set back far enough from the main road for street noise not to be an issue. You can walk to restaurants; Whiptail Grill is good, Spotted Dog is good (fancier), and Oscar's (drive to this one). The stop for the town shuttle to the ZNP entrance is very close by. Here you catch the park shuttle to go into the park.

The negatives: The campground is part of chain hotel, I got the feeling the management were more interested in the hotel than the campground. The washrooms are needing to be upgraded, they are not being maintained; broken door locks, no out of order signs on the women's showers (yeah, try changing shower stalls in the nude), old deteriorated counters, old scuffed up and grungy painted floor. poorly draining showers that overflow and go to the next stall. The shower token system is a bit of pain but we found the time with each token was enough, it makes you do what you need to do, not what you want to do. The sink for washing dishes was clogged all three days; dirty, and disgusting. The washrooms are not regularly cleaned, yes that's right, they are not cleaned daily. That is why you will find dirty shower stalls, toilet paper hanging around, soap scum, stinky urinals, etc, etc.

The tokens are a necessary evil at this location. There is a major campground nearby, close to the park entrance, without showers some of these folks will come to use this campgrounds showers, without a token they can't.

Commercial CGs usually put tents in the worst spot. This campground has wonderful sites on the Virgin River for tent campers. We were grateful to find such a scenic spot on the river after being shut out of the Natl Park. While this is more expensive, I would chose it over the park because of the river access, showers, pool and convenient access to restaurants and amenities in town.

Room Tip: Tent campers should get a river site

We camped out (tent) here on Sat night and were fortunate enough to have our request for a river site granted! It was a great little site (F-3), right along the river bed, and we heard the sound of rushing water all evening long. We saw some of the other tent sites and to be honest, they looked like crap, right there in the middle of a parking lot basically, some immediately adjacent to the public restrooms--no thanks, lol!

We used the showers Sunday morning and even though the tokens they provide you are supposedly only good for a 6-minute shower, either they last longer or 6-minutes is more than enough time for a decent shower (I always thought I spent 10-15 mins in the shower at home).

The campground is very conveniently located to ZNP and the small town of Springdale. The restroom that I used Sun morning only had 2 sinks, and although it wasn't a problem at 630a when I was washing up, I'd imagine it got pretty crazy a little later in the morning.

I'd still prefer to get a campground in ZNP if we visit again (we don't do first-come first serve, reservations only), but I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, just be sure to request a riverfront spot!

Room Tip: Request a river site!

This property is very close to the entrance of Zion National Park, just a couple blocks away. Where the NP campgrounds have no hook ups or showers, this RV park has everything, including an outdoor swimming pool. The amenities were definitely worth it, as temps were in the upper 90's during our stay. We were able to drive in without reservations on Labor Day weekend and get a spot for two nights. Service was friendly and helpful.
