A must to visit! Try the Smokies (smoked whole trout) and the grilled trout as main course.

“Something fishy under a tree”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

A family favourite which we have frequented many times. Fresh trout served in a restaurant built around an old Mugumo Tree. The menu consists of a selection of starters - cold or hot smoked trout, trout chowder or avocado slices. The cold smoked trout is served with delicous horseradish sauce and the avocado slices come with a kali sauce - not to be missed. Grilled Trout is my choice on the main courses - the trout comes fresh from the ponds below - can't get fresher than that. Trout is also baked or filleted. For non-fishy folks then the beef is well worth a try - free range and succulent. Leave room for desert as the chocolate and carrot cakes served with thick cream are well worth sampling. Wash it all down with either soft drinks, beers or wine. Even better these days - plan in advance and ring to see if the self-catering Creaky Cottage by the trout ponds is available for a night or two. There is a sweet little gift shop, so stop by and get your car sticker too. Trout Tree is a great place to stop when heading up, or back from Meru, Samburu, Shaba, or Laikipia. It is about two and a half to three hours from Nairobi, depending on traffic. Use the new bypass to get to the Thika Road if you can.
The restaurant is open from 11am to 4pm.

“A world away”
Reviewed 9 November 2011

The trout tree is a world away. A beautiful tree house setting off the beaten track, well worth a visit. Service is quick which is a rarity in Nanyuki and the food simple yet delicious. Highly recommended.

“A must visit due to the unique nature”
Reviewed 20 September 2011

Visited here in August on a tour of all the places in Nanyuki as I'm moving there soon. If I was going to take visiting friends out to dinner, this would be the first choice. Set in a tree house above the trout farm pools, makes a one off that you'll always remember.

The food is fine if you like fish, but even with two kids - 1 and 6 they were both happy as they took the battered goujon "fish fingers". I had chowder soup, and a Masala fish which was delicious, but can't remmeber what the other adults had. It was very relaxed, informal dining. Chilling out leaning back against the rim, and watching the fish swim around. Aaaaah.

If you don't like trout (shame on you) they do have steak. Do try and check the opening times - I went there in Nov 2010, but it was closed early on a Sunday. It was worth going back to check it out this year.

Tip: take a jacket - its open to the elements, so if a breeze picks up it can get a bit chilly. (Nanyuki is about 6000ft above sea level!).

Not cheap - still good value as its good quality food. It's also cheaper than what you would pay back home for a similar meal.
