Timau River Lodge

This venue is used by local expatriates and the British Army and has much character. It is a welcome change from the modern concrete monstrocities one encounters in many parts of the Country. Rustic yes but most enjoyable.

I have stayed in many places around the world with fairly dubious standards of hygiene and safety but this place has to be the worst I have encountered. It is 'quaint' if that is what you like to call dreadfully maintained. The sink fell off the wall in the bathroom (almost taking my feet with it) which was held up by a rotten piece of wood, the electrics dangled dangerously live at neck height and everything looked like it had seen better days. I almost would not mind if this was a cheap backpacker place (this is what it is) but we were charged £30pp per night for a minimum of 3 sharing (including sharing a bed) I would not call almost £100 cheap. The staff were mixed, some really nice others not very helpful at all and again certainly not the standard I would expect for the price. We went full board prior to climbing Mt Kenya and to be honest the accommodation is not far off the basic standard offered up the mountain (which is good and much, much cheaper). If you are looking for a backpacker join at international rates then stay here, otherwise pay a little more and go to sweet waters, the quality and standard are not even in the same league.

Room Tip: None of the rooms have mosquito nets and all are riddled with bugs. The dogs fight the geese all nig...

Timau River Lodge is an undiscovered delight in a beautiful area of Kenya. It provides a perfect stopping point for a trip to Samburu National Park or as an alternative to the stuffy, expensive accommodation in and around Mt Kenya National Park.

The lodge is teeming with geese, ducks, dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens and in case none of this feels wild enough, monkeys too! One can easily walk around the camp for hours, discovering something new every few minutes, not to mention the roaring waterfall nearby.

The accommodations consist of rustic cabins that were designed by the owners. They are simple and do not allow too much natural light in. What a shame because the natural light is beautiful in this part of the country. There are no frills here - the bathrooms are clean but simple and the decor is outdated. But the simplicity and charm of the place totally makes up for this.

The food is all cooked by one of the owners and is divine! Using local ingredients, the meals are amazing.

All in all, Timau River Lodge offers a unique experience at a very affordable price. In this way, it is unusual. Most of the other lodges are overpriced and overbooked. This lodge makes no qualms about its simplicity ad rustic charm and charges a very reasonable rate for clean, basic accommodation and excellent food and location.
