“Revamped but requires better quality control”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2012

It has always been a great place. I have probably visited 4-5 times before their recent takeover by Fairmont Hotels and refurbishment. The front desk staff are very friendly and have great customer service skills. The lobby looks well maintained. Not very happy because they did not convert South African Rand.

The new years eve party planning could have been better, however the buffet had some good offerings including the barbecue. Some "bigshots" were ruining the evening for all by insisting that the staff provide a la carte options for them and making them run ragged.

The fliers that are printed for the New Years events were printed on a tacky looking blue paper and everything was not on schedule.

The rooms are not well refurbished, doors, locks and fitting not working in river view cottages. The paint work and finishing on the tiles in the bathroom are also poor.

Great view of the mountain as always!

We stayed at the Fairmont Mt Kenya Safari Club August 21 - 22 2012. It is a beautiful place with wonderful grounds. The staff there was wonderful and attentive and the manager stopped by for a chat. We stayed in one of the cottages which was very well appointed. The fireplace was great since the place can get a bit cold. The staff also came in at night to prep water bottles to put in our beds. The food was plentiful and delicious even though it wasn't that exciting. We visited the animal orphanage and had an awesome guide who you could tell loved the animals as much as they did him. Our only regret is that the stay was very short and we were not able to utilize everything that was on offer. I would most definitely recommend that you visit this place. When the clouds are clear the view of Mount Kenya is amazing.

Room Tip: Definitely get a cottage if you are travelling as a family or with friends. I haven't stayed in...

We stayed at the Mount Kenya Safari Club for three nights on a two-week safari. We were really looking forward to it, given its history with Bill Holden and others. We found the extensive grounds to be very attractive and well-kept. We had a suite with views of Mount Kenya and were close to the pool, maze, and main buildings. The room was large and well appointed, and I loved the bathroom with separate shower and tub. There were peacocks and other birds on the grounds that added great atmosphere. The lounge and restaurant also were comfortable, and the terrace was welcome in the warm weather. The food was generally good and plentiful, with meats barbequed in the evening and freshly made eggs in the morning. There was a range of activities, such as golf, horseback riding, and swimming. Overall, staff were friendly and fairly efficient. A very interesting area was the Bill Holden animal orphanage started by Stephanie Powers; our guide there was interesting and informative. We had a great experience at the lodge and would return.

Seeing that the Fairmont Mt. Kenya Safari club boasts of 5 star ratings, we expected superior service but were greatly disappointed with the service we got.

First the good: they have numerous activities that can keep one busy. They also have separate eating areas for children.

The bad: The room service was lousy. On our first night, we requested that our room fireplace to be lit and it took 2 hours before someone came to light up our fireplace. On the second night, no one bothered with our request. Our room was also not cleaned and after making numerous calls, they finally sent someone. We left the room to give the cleaning ladies room to do their work and when we returned, we noticed that the room had not been cleaned and the bedsheets had not been changed!!

I obviously will not be making a second visit any time soon.

Thank you for your review dated 24th August 2012.

I appreciate you taking the time out to write this review and express your comments.
At the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club we strive to ensure the every guest is provided with the very best quality and standards of service. The leadership team and I are disappointed that we let you, and ourselves, down on this occasion.
The points you have raised are highly significant. I sincerely appreciate the compliments on our significant variety of activities available as well as our children’s dining area and children’s activities available – I trust that you, and your family, found these facilities enjoyable and up to your expectations.
I will personally look into addressing our shortcomings with regards to timeliness of lighting the fires in the rooms as well as your issues raised with regards to room cleanliness. In line with our Fairmont Green Partnership enviromental program our bed linen is changed every second night (for our guests staying more than one night) unless, of course, otherwise requested by the guest, I sincerely apologize that this was not communicated effectively to you on this occasion.
I apologize for the inconsistency in service that you experienced and I would like to assure you that we aim to acknowledge and appreciate each of our guests in every interaction and I am truly sorry that we have fallen short of our own expectations. I have personally taken this matter up with the departments involved.

I do hope you will give us the opportunity to host you again soon.

On arrival you take in the views and we were welcomed by a dancing peacock which was lovely. We stayed in the cottages which were nice, great view, your own little garden, lounge, and nice bedroom. The location of the Hotel is great, very peaceful and relaxing. I went Horse riding in the park one morning which was very pleasant, the fresh air, multitude of trees, saw a Albino Zebra, in all a lovely ride. The Animal Orpanage was a delight, Elephant Man does a great job.

The spanner in the works came with service. Room service took hours and especially considering we were located a stone's throw from the main building, it was pathetic. Dinner time was no better, the waiters were so slow. The food was palatable but it would be nice to have more choice as a vegetarian. Breakfast service was even worse, by the time you got your tea you were done with breakfast.

In conclusion unless Fairmont gets its act together and sorts out the service issues, it would not warrant another visit from us.

Room Tip: The cottages are very pleasant to stay in, with a lounge and your personal garden space, great views...

Boy, it's more like an American Country Club than an African hotel, but after a hard few days on safari, it is pretty comfortable and a great place to revive.
Golf, pool, food and more food, wonderful staff (and nice!) and spacious cool rooms.
Public rooms are elegant and nice to be in- the remnants of the original 'Happy Valley' type house.
Lovely grounds, gardens and 'zoo'.
Bikes, horses and a maze- what more could you ask for? View of Mount Kenya on a good day perhaps?

Room Tip: All rooms are hreat. There are some garden rooms but they are a little dark and the security is not...

For a five star hotel, and one that pretends to be one of the finest hotels in Africa, we were truly disappointed eith the service in general, and paticulalry with room service - more than 1 hour to get ice - two nights in a row, and housekeeping - we had to share one towel between three! The hotel was clearly not ready for a busy weekend. Mealtimes were chaotic with even poorer service at the table and buffet. When i complained at check out, the front office lady was indifferent and did not even bother to find out details of our disappointment Unless you will be the only people in the hotel - prepare to be very disappointed. Fairmont really needs to sortbthis hotel out.
