The obvious attraction of this hotel is the setting against the backdrop of the majestic Mt Kenya and those views cannot be bettered short of being at a camp higher up the mountain itself.

Rooms are fine though dated but the grounds are excellent and very well maintained.

Though from an era gone by, the tasks at the entrance to the dining room and the bar are very impressive.
Bush dinner by the river right next to the mountain forest is an experience not to be missed.

We arrived at this hotel after a long car journey and were greeted with towels and a drink (just like other hotels). Sadly our safari guide/driver was not provided with a drink etc which made me feel rather cross. The hotel is very beautiful with peacocks running around and lovely scenery but the reception and gift shop staff struggled to understand our requests and were nowhere near as friendly as at the other hotels we had visited on our tour around Kenya. This was frustrating. We required some dollars but we were told that they only had 21 dollars in the whole of the hotel..... I got a little cross with the quite blatant lying occurring by this member of staff and it really put a chip on our shoulder. A hotel receiving a large number of international guests would quite clearly have more than 21 dollars in notes.... We compared the hotel to a very smart London hotel in a very scenic location with many artefacts of Africa on display. We didn’t feel like we had an "experience" at this hotel as tourists and it was the least enjoyable hotel of our trip. There was a certain category of people staying at this hotel - business personnel and people who want pure luxury in a very westernised setting - maybe people who didn’t fancy the full African experience in tents or in the wilderness. We went to leave the hotel but was sent back to reception as our guide needed his card stamped to confirm we had paid our bill.. not come across this before - seemed very untrusting. There was lots to do for kids and the restaurant staff were the most friendly of the bunch. The restaurant manager was fantastic, he was hot on the high standard of service provided and the food was the best we had in Kenya. the orphanage was the main thing we very much enjoyed at the hotel, what a fantastic project, we fed many animals and it lives up to the fantastic rating it has on all the other reviews. A great thing to do for adults and kids. In summary it was a real shame that we did not warm to this hotel, we like staying in 5 star hotels all over the globe but this one lacked soul for us.

Thank you for taking the time to your provide valued feedback of your recent stay with us at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club.
We are delighted to hear that you managed to enjoy the many options that we have on offer to our valued guests especially the wonderful animal orphanage.
I am sorry to hear that you did find the property to be totally to your taste, being a historical period property this was quite typical of the ‘50’s. We have found that not all guests visiting Kenya desire to stay in tented camps or bush lodges; we are delighted to offer a luxury experience that has many authentically local elements on offer whilst our team prides itself on offering true Kenyan Hospitality to our guests.
Regarding your point on acquiring US Dollars from the hotel, we are unable by law to sell US Dollars to guests and our cashiers must ‘bank’ whatever takings we receive as payment on a daily basis. We do however keep a small float for offering guests their change in US Dollars. This is a legal requirement in Kenya – please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
I do appreciate the numerous positive comments that you have also made in your review – I will most certainly share all your comments with the team; who will be delighted to hear your valued feedback.

Kind Regards

The old Mount Kenya Safari Club sits magnificently below Mt Kenya, and large grounds. The rooms, in houses mainly, are large and well appointed, but a bit of a walk to the main building. The restaurant is OK, service is good, but it all feels slightly worn and trying to replicate the feeling of grand hotels from colonial times... So many better choices nearby for less money.

Thank you for your review of the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club!
We are most appreciative for your feedback especially your thoughts on our friendly and helpful staff.
We do have various room categories, I would recommend our William Holden Cottages or Manor Suites for guests wanting a more ‘spacious’ hotel room experience.
We all look forward to welcoming you back to the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club.

This is one of the best family vacation spots in Kenya especially if you are a group of several families with kids. MKSC has luxurious accommodation, GREAT Staff and lots of activities including a 9 course golf course crossing the equator and on the shadow of Mount Kenya; horse riding, dog walks, swimming, tennis, croquet, mini zoo, gym & spa. You are also within an hour's drive from two wildlife sanctuaries with Rhinos. So lots to do for both adults & kids.
I've had some great family moments at MKSC.

Another African classic. Gorgeous garden and grounds, lovely rooms, cold pool, great food (buffet night is great), lots to do--walk, golf, swim, horseback ride, mtn bike, relax....
Look for some cool birds and the colobus monkeys in the trees!
Local dancers perform most evenings out on the patio.

We traveled with our 2 boys to the lodge to spend Easter holidays. We had a wonderful room on a small lake and over viewing mount Kenya. The rooms were spacious. This lodge is very family orientated with many kids activities; horse back riding, big playing grounds with supervision and fishing, Also, the kids restaurant had good meals for the kids with TV and some toys to keep them busy while we could have a quiet dinner. Meals were buffet with wide variety. All the stuff are friendly and very helpful with the kids

Room Tip: Rooms on the lake are very spacious and quiet with privacy

In April, I took my teenage son, my three year-old and my mom, who was visiting us from Toronto for a safari to the Mount Kenya and Samburu regions. Initially, we planned to spend two nights at the Safari Club. We left after the first night for Samburu and we were so eager to get back to the relaxing ambience of the hotel that we checked out of our tented camp after only one night. In short, we couldn't wait to return to a place that feels like home from the moment you enter the gates.

We stayed in the William Holden Cottage, which was like a home a way from home. In the evening we all snuggled up in front of the enormous fire place and watched a movie. Truly a wonderful family bonding experience.

The food was among the most memorable experiences. We delighted in going to every meal to see what the chefs had put together for us - particularly dinner which was an a la carte fare. The presentation during each of the dinners we had, was exemplary. Also my three year-old running after the peacock during breakfast will be a memory not soon forgotten.

In short, this is a great hotel for just about any occasion. Whether you're a family with kids or you just want a romantic get-a-way, this is your place. And while it may be a bit pricey, we felt it was worth every penny, particularly when contrasted to similar venues in different countries.

We can't wait to go back to get away from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi!
