We have just arrived back from a wonderful holiday-the hotel is fantastic! From the moment you arrive, you know that you are somewhere special: it looks, feels and sounds as you would expect an exclusive spa to be (not as though we had ever been to one)! The grounds are wonderful and the whole resort has been carefully set out to give you glimpses of the sea, lush planting or pools.
We researched Mauritius before we went, so we knew that as it was the end of their Winter, we were likely to get some rain showers, grey cloud, quite strong winds and not terribly high temperatures, especially in the South of the island. The latter appeared to come as a shock to some people, so do bear this in mind and chose the time of year which suits you best. (The seasons are opposite to ours, so August is during their low-season.)
The resort is largely based around the beautiful beach and bright blue sea. Water shoes are useful for walking along the beach/entering the water, as there is quite a lot of coral. The current is quite strong, so heed the advice you are given if you use the free pedalos/kayaks etc and stay in front of the hotel's beach. (We saw a number of couples being towed back.) Do book in advance to go out on the free glass bottom boat, it is worth doing the short trip, even if the weather is not fantastic.
This time of year, there are plenty of empty sunbeds all around the resort;overlooking the sea or around the delightful, though cold, pools. But if you really want to get away from it all, go to the Spa. You do not need to book any treatments, you can just go in for free and relax on one of the comfy beds/sun-loungers, use the jacuzzi, sauna, steam room or, if you are feeling brave, have a drip in the small but cold pool. All of this is enclosed by a small but beautiful garden with the sound of relaxing music gently playing in the background. (The beds furthest away from the jacuzzi tend to be the quietest, though if people are talking too loudly in the jacuzzi, staff will speak to them.)
We loved the Playa restaurant overlooking the sea, virtually on the beach. It suited us, as we enjoyed being 'served' and it was quieter than the buffet, so we had most of our meals there-you need to book it in advance for the evening meal but not for lunch. The food is beautifully presented-don't be surprised if you put on rather a lot of weight! The staff, as with everyone else in the resort, were very polite and friendly. We had a wonderful special anniversary meal at the Playa but we won't tell you too much, as we would not want to spoil the surprise, if you are lucky enough to have one yourself :) Needless to say, we felt very special!
There is a children's club, small gym, tennis courts and a games area but we did not make use of these, so we can not comment. However, we did make use of the free bicycle hire. The bikes vary in quality, so are not necessarily the easiest to use but staff did check the breaks were fine before we set out and encouraged us to test the gears. You are also provided with a helmet.
The free phone is very useful and we greatly appreciated being able to phone home, as we had come without our teenage son. (Obviously, there are times when you have to wait but that is to be expected.) The free resort wide wifi was also useful, as were the two fixed computers next to the pool bar.
The range of drinks available in the All Inclusive is very good but do remember that the A.I. stops at midnight, not as though there is much in the way of evening entertainment. Talking of which, you do really need to go All Inclusive, as there is nothing much else around and prices at the resort would be very expensive, if you had to pay.
Do make the effort to tour the island, unless you are after a totally relaxing holiday. We booked our holiday on-line independently, so arranged our own transfers and tours. We were fortunate to become friends with another couple who wanted to see similar things to us, so we shared the cost of a large taxi (minivan) and did two full-day taxi tours. Be prepared to look around, compare prices, make phone calls and to haggle if you want to get the best deals :) (You will pay a lot more if you go through the holiday reps.)
Our airy room had the wow factor, great bathroom and a sea view: we were very pleased with it. There were a couple of small maintenance issues but these were largely resolved very quickly. The room looked like it had been recently painted, was very clean, the fridge replenished daily and towels/sheets etc changed regularly.
The staff were really hard working. We would like to thank them all: those we saw and those behind the scenes who we did not even meet but are equally important to the smooth running of the resort.
