I've been a bit slow to write this, its been just over 6 months since our glorious stay at Maylyn and we miss the place so much. Planned to spend 2 nights and ended up staying 2 weeks ! Fantastic hosts, unbelievable food, the most romantic accommodation and the friendliest atmosphere about the Dining/Bar area..... to top all this is the price..... so cheap! I cant wait to get back. Joe and his family are amazing. We spent 3 months travelling SE asia and Maylyn was the highlight of our trip

We had heard that Vang Vieng was a hedonist paradise, and had planned to stay one night. On Lonely Planets always excellent advise, we happily found Maylyn, we stayed for five fabulous days. The owner Joe was a perfect host, the staff were wonderful and the food was excellent. Our rattan bungalow was amazing, so compact, yet so well designed. I have travelled extensively in South East Asia, and Maylyn will remain
my top recommendation for accomodation.

Joe was great (and Irish not Australian), the rooms very authentic and clean. The gardens beautiful and well maintained and the food truly the best around. There are two ways over the river, one across a toll bridge which will cost 4000 kips per person and another across a free bridge with a nice walk down the side of the river.

Thank you to all the staff for a pleasant stay at a great price.

I stayed there for 2 nights, after the first night I asked for an extra blanket, ok they told me they will send somebody to bring it..good...we went tubing so I leftmost of the cash in my pocket in the room (I've counted it it was over 160) when we returned I had the blanket but (100 was missing from my pocket)
wouldn't go back

This is an interesting one there is nothing to indicate that this person actually stayed here and I certainly knew nothing about it until I read about it.
but anyway I wrote to him twice to find out more in greater detail what happened. the second time he actually responded of course he couldnt tell me who he asked for a blanket .....or give me any other details except the 100 was 100,000 ..er kip that is
What I find curious is that if you ask us for for a blanket we will give you one we wont put it in your room .... we dont do that sort of room service .......
We do however have in the bungalows lockable steel boxes to store your valuables and you can use your own lock if you so wish .

This is a lovely place. We stayed on the recommendation of the 'Our Pick' on Lonely Planet and overall weren't disappointed. The rustic little huts are basic but very pretty and we were lucky enough to get one with a hot shower as not all of them do. We just turned out to be lucky as they don't tell you this when allocating your hut so be sure to ask! However if you do get a cold water shower then there are communal hot water showers you can use.

The attached restaurant serves very good food and the staff are very friendly. There is also a laundry service. The downsides to this place is that although it's away from the main action it's still noisy. We could hear loud techno musci till the early hours but to be honest I think the whole of Vang Vieng could hear it so nothing the Guesthouse could do!

Another thing I have to comment on is that lots of people on here have said the Australian owner is lovely..... We thought he was actually weird and a bit bad tempered!! Maybe a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character. On a couple of occassions we heard him swearing and walking around scowling muttering stuff under his breath. Two other guests also commented on this and said that this was the reason they were leaving early.

Overall this place is cheap, good accommodation that serves really good food. Maybe just call the owner first and ask him what type of mood he's in that week!

The Maylyn guesthouse is in a lovely spot down by the river. The wooden bungalow on stilts we stayed in was small and basic (with a quilt that smelt of many of the previous occupants' sweat, and roaches in the bathroom) but very pretty. It had a lovely balcony facing right on to the river. It's supposedly in the quieter end of town, although were kept awake by the thumping sound systems of the bars on the nearby island until about 4am. That racket was then replaced by another - a cacophony of cockadoodledooing and mooing and braying from the many surrounding farms. That said, it was pretty good value for less than 6 quid.

Joe and his family are the best hosts you could possibly ask for. My boyfriend and i planned on staying just 3 night but this turned into 11 days of true relaxation and lots of crazy fun!!
The bungalows are everything you cool need and excellent value for money with stunning view of the mountains. Maylyn has a personal touch that may other guest houses in vang vieng are lacking. Its close enough to walk in to town but fare away enough to enjoy you stay. Everyone one we met at the guest house was great always up for some fun. The food is fantastic you must try the lap lao yummy!! The near by caves are worth a visit as is the blue lagoon!! We had a truly magical time here and will definitely be making a return visit soon!
Thanks Joe your a legend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are a budget guest house/mini eco resort. We are on the edge of a village our rear faces towards the Karst mountains. We are located next door to the beautiful and expensive Vieng Tara Hotel. We have a variety of rooms some are simple basic timber frame and bamboo bungalows for people who want a more authentic SE Asian experience and we do have more conventional masonry rooms for those who need them. The main appeal of our place is the location, the views and of course our Garden which at times is full of butterflies. Early wet season is best for the butterflies. I recognise that we may not be what everyone is looking for but many people love us.. ... more   less
