“Avoid Room 25”
Reviewed 27 December 2011

What a difference a room makes! Our room had been fumigated and the mattress STANK. All our clothes had to be laundered to get rid of the smell. The sink in the 'bathroom' leaked and we had to put a bucket under it. The 'view' was a corridor wall which meant the curtain had to be closed all the times. The room was full at breakfast but, quite frankly, we couldn't wait to get out. Our worst experience of any hotel anywhere in the world! We have paid half as much for hotels which were brilliant, Avoid this like the plague-unless you want to catch it!

Room Tip: As we said - avoid room 25!

Very simple room with small bathroom but the view more than makes up for any shortcomings. Staff were friendly and helpful but breakfast was very simple. The hotel is close to numerous resturants and street vendors though so you won't go hungry. Make sure you ask for a balcony room facing the river. We enjoyed many a cold beer Lao watching the sun set behind the limestone karsts - just beautiful!

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room facing the river.

We had a very pleasant stay at the Popular View Guesthouse. Our room offered exceptional views from it's balcony. Air conditioning and TV both in good working order added to our comfort. A basic breakfast was offered but you will not get good coffee here(instant coffee). The owners were very kind and helpful with any of our needs. For $25 a night we recommend this guesthouse.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony view.

Good basic place to stay. Air conditioning in my room worked well, a must! No TV or fridge in room. Rooms are clean and the highlights are the huge window and the balcony; both look out on to the river and the Karst mountains. The rooms in the back are quiet. There is a fridge in the lobby to purchase juice, water, beer, soda. The owner and his wife are very nice and helpful. This hotel is Laotian owned, something I consider in a developing country. They organize trips and buses from the hotel. Breakfast is included; we are given a choice of foods. Many shops, restaurants and internet cafes surround the hotel.
This hotel is priced a little high for Vang Vieng and for the amenities. But... Vang Vieng is a backpackers' party town. Some less expensive places can get pretty loud. Paying a little more is worth it if you are looking for a quieter environment. Can easily find paths to get to the countryside and mountains; a 10 minute walk gets you there.

Room Tip: 2nd floor+, in the back with balcony & A/C

We had no where to stay on arriving in Vang Vieng. We went to a guesthouse that was recommended but it was full, and they suggested trying next door, which was Popular View. It is right in the middle of town. Our corner room had a balcony, and windows facing in two directions overlooking the river and the bamboo bridges crossing it.
Splendid view. Guesthouse is run by Mr Vieng and his wife who are very conscientious and very helpful and very friendly. We booked bus tickets to Luang Prabang with them and a Tuk Tuk picked us up at the hotel to take us to the bus station. Free WiFi and a computer in the lobby. We highly recommend this guesthouse.
