“A comfortable stay”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

We spent three nights in the Champa Lao Villa (not the bungalows), and enjoyed our stay in the double room with garden view. The room is spacious with fan and aircon, but we just used the fan as it was cool at night. The bathroom was large and we had warm to cold water. Its in a great, quite location, and set in really nice gardens, very shaded and cool. Breakfast was average, choice of four things. Staff were pretty unfriendly, and not welcoming, but so were most of the local people in Vang Vieng (everyone just seemed really put off by tourists except for a few lovely people). We didnt leave our key with the staff, we took it everyday with us (its not the hotels policy to leave the key, its your choice - butt that does mean you wont have your room cleaned). Overall, a good quality stay for the budget traveller and recommended to all spending a few nights in Vang Vieng.

Room Tip: Close to the reception so you get wifi signal

I'm sad to have to write this review. We actually enjoyed the rustic comfortable character of this guesthouse and it's convenient yet quiet location. However, we had $400 USD stolen out of our room while the we were gone for the day. It is the hotel's policy to have guests leave the room key at the front desk when you leave the building. We took our primary money with us, but had a reserve amount deeply hidden in a passport inside bag within another backpack.

It is our policy to double check all our critical documents and money at the beginning of every day, which is why we know it was in the room that morning. When we returned, we noticed the trash in our room was taken out, which was odd because we didn't select a room with turnover service. The next morning, sure enough, when we did our daily checks, the money was missing and the hotel staff simply repeated that it wasn't their responsibility and brushed the incident aside.

It is a terrible feeling to loose two weeks of living expenses (in this case we were on a budget honeymoon). Don't let this happen to you.

We loved Vang Vieng, but not so much our stay at Champa Lao. The rooms were ok, but the service was very poor. No one spoke English, which made it hard to communicate about anything. The 'office' didn't open till 8 am and closed at 8 pm. The guy looking after the guesthouse was on Facebook the whole day and after 3 nights I had to go and ask if they could please clean our (bath)room. The set-up of the place is very nice, with hammocks and plants.

We had a good stay in Champ Lao. The room was very clean and extremely good value for money. The fan was a bit noisy and the hotel is in a noisy part of town, but our room was towards the back and we heard no noise from inside.

The staff were really friendly and helpful.

The breakfast was a bit disappointing as the bread was stale, but that was the only problem we had with the place.

Room Tip: Choose a room towards the back for peace and quiet

We walked in on a recommendation from our guesthouse manager in Vientiane. They had a bungalow available right next to the bridge.

It was very rustic: Bamboo hut on stilts with a corrugated tin roof, slatted wood floors, a bucket toilet, nearly outdoor shower, Mosquito nets over the beds, a light, and a fan.

All in the most beautiful setting you can imagine and at an unbeatable price.

The stairs getting down to cross the bamboo bridge across the narrow arm of the river to the island need to be taken carefully. This is not someplace you want to stay if you plan to be out drinking until after dark. But if you don't mind the local charm of the local-type of hut setting, this is a great place to stay a night or four.

**Note that there is the Champa Lao Villa and Bungalows across the street from each other, and presumably associated. This is for the Bungalows.

We booked one night through Agoda and the room/shared bathrooms are fine.

A bit off the Main Street, which is what attracted us in the first place, however not quiet due to the restaurant/guesthouse across the road BLARING karaoke from when we arrived in the afternoon to late evening. The speakers directly face Champa Lao so there is no escaping it.

However, my main issue with this guesthouse is the fact that when we got up in the morning, we had been padlocked into our room. This was not possible to do without a key, and as ours was in our room I assume one of their staff made a mistake and didn't realise there was people in the room. After knocking loudly and calling out for about 5 minutes a staff member finally came up and let us out. However there was no apology/explanation given, and the owner even tried to blame it on our friends saying they "must have been playing a joke on us". I don't understand how that would be possible seeing they didn't have a key to our padlock. It was quite terrifying and completely unsafe.

We moved to another guesthouse (which we were planning to do anyway, before the lock-in incident) and someone from Champa Lao turned up at our new guesthouse the following day waving a photocopy of my partners passport! I couldn't understand this as we paid our bill online, and didn't leave a mess as we were in such a hurry to get out of there! Our new guesthouse went to speak to Champa Lao to clarify what the issue was and came back saying we shouldn't worry about it as he was probably just pissed off he had lost his only guests.

Horrible experience, much better accommodation on the Main Street for much cheaper.

Room Tip: Remove the padlock from the outside of your door at night.

Champa Lao is a beautifully furnished and decorated haven just up the hill from the main town of Vang Vieng.

The rooms are beautifully decorated, shower good pressure, beds comfortable, free water, helpful staff, clean, air-con and fan, lots of hanging space, and a lovely hammock outside of your room with little sofa with cushions on.

You can tell they have gone to a lot of effort into the place and it has paid off, a little more expensive than the rest of Vang Vieng but you are out of town in a lovely hidden haven! Breakfast included just across the road at Champa Lao Bungalows.

Please note: the more guesthouse looking rooms are Champa Lao THE VILLA and the photos of rooms with bamboo walls are Champa Lao BUNGALOWS.
