My partner and I decided on this hotel since Ban Sabai (our preferred hotel) was sold out on Sat 20 July. We ended up staying three nights at Silver Naga since we did not want to repack and move to another hotel. Room rate was on the higher side at approx 500,000 kip (USD 70) per night for a direct booking. I found out later that the rate on Agoda was less; approx 450,000 kip and the hotel had to pay a commission to Agoda on this. I think the hotel should appreciate guests who book direct with them and give better value; apparently this is not the case at Silver Naga. Appreciated the option to pay in either kip, USD or THB.
The male front desk staff at check-in was helpful. We got a room on level 4 with a small balcony overlooking the beautiful Namsong River. Great view from the balcony. We spent a lot of time at the balcony. But beware as this room overlooks the pool which can get noisy from about 5pm. Best to close the balcony door in the evenings as there were bugs, mosquitoes, etc... many. The room was basic. One firm king bed, a/c plus wall fan. Coffee/tea and kettle provided. 2 complimentary bottles of drinking water were appreciated; refills available at the lobby; otherwise 5,000 kip for an additional bottle. TV with BBC, CNN, Discovery and all other local/Thai TV channels were available but the TV reception was poor; we ended up turning it off as we could not enjoy the broadcast of the royal birth; had to read the news via internet. Beware of bugs, mosquitoes, insects inside the room.
Shower, wc, basic vanity counter in bathroom; no bathtub. Large recyclable bottles of bath gel and shampoo were provided. Also, a small piece of soap and cotton buds. I had to endure a cold shower after check-in as there was no hot water. Found out later that I had to let the water run for more than 5 minutes before getting any hot water which was a waste of precious water. Also found out that the "C" indicator at the shower faucet was for hot water and vice versa. After the first night, we found lots of bugs in the shower room. Guess this is acceptable as Housekeeping did not remove all the bugs.
Breakfast was basic. I guess they catered best to vegetarians as there were no meat dishes anywhere. Vegetable curry, stir fried vegetables, fried noodles with eggs, baked beans, baguette, corn flakes, muesli, cut fruits, congee, plain noodle soup, coffee/tea. The saving grace for breakfast was the smiling faces of the staff at the egg station. Kudos to these pretty girls. Best to get to breakfast after 9am so that you can avoid the noisy Korean groups but the food containers may be empty or limited food items left by this time. There were just too many of these groups around and this will turn away the independent travellers who appreciate some peace and quiet. After all, the reason for staying along Namsong River was to enjoy the tranquility of the area but you will get none of these with these noisy groups at Silver Naga.
Pool was decent but I can't say that it is the best in VV. It closes too early at 7pm. I saw the staff treating the pool with possibly chlorine at about 6.50pm. But, he was honest to refuse entry to a few guests at about 6.55pm. After all, no one should get into the pool when it is being treated (even if treatment begins before closing time).
Wifi was available but speed was slow. Had a re-login every time we returned to the room; this was not good. The password was good for only two days so we had to ask for new passwords on the third day; staff did not advise us about this. Again, not convenient for guests.
No safety box was available in the room; we had to deposit this at the front desk where they will simply pack your staff in a clear plastic bag, wrote your room number on the bag and deposited it somewhere. I was relieved to get all my valuables back without any missing items. Front desk staff were helpful.
Hotel information about the bus transfer to Vientiane was unclear. We paid 70,000 kip per person for the bus from hotel to Vientiane. I later saw another sign indicating 50,000 kip from another shop. They picked us up at 9.50am; dropped us off at the bus station in the city without any instructions. Waited till approx 10.30am for a 45-seater coach. Arrived at the border at approx 3pm.
Despite my comments, we generally enjoyed our stay at Silver Naga, and especially in Vang Vieng.
