The Elephant Crossing Hotel
Ranked #9 of 25 Hotels in Vang Vieng
Reviewed 8 May 2013

The best thing about Elephant Crossing is its location. Situated right on the river with a decking verandah overlooking the river and the mountains. Having breakfast or a drink there is an experience in itself.
The rooms are quite spacious, the facilities good - our room (on the ground floor) had a small verandah unfortunately overlooking the car park. The rooms on the upper floors have balconies some of which have great views of the river and mountains.
The reception staff are helpful and friendly and the free drinking water available in reception is a nice touch. The bar staff are a little slow (common in Laos).
The hotel is located on a road (no noise) towards the edge of Vang Vieng but it's only a short walk to all the bars, restaurants etc available in this great little town.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floors with balcony and river and mountain view.

...how to start. hmm i choosed elephant crossing after i read all the good ratings here in tripadvisor. result - just disappointing. this hotel needs urgently some renovations. really small rooms, no elevator, bathroom a disaster. aircon really noisy it was impossible to sleep i had to switch it off after a while. cmon guys do some renovations and you will shine again like in the good old days.

We stayed here our first night in Vang Vieng. We walked in and they only had one room left so definitely book in advance if you do want to stay here.

The room was beautiful, although the plug in the bath broke the second I touched it. Great balcony looking over the river.

The bar/restaurant is in an amazing location and the views are unbeatable, however the service was horrible. When we went for drinks, they did not seem too pay any attention to us; 3 staff just stood around talking and forgot my drink.

We went again at 9pm and asked if they were still open for dinner; they said they were and there were still a couple of other people being served food so we sat and ordered. It took about 30mins to get our first meal. Where we sat, we were in view of the kitchen and saw it sitting on the bench for 10mins before serving it to us, obviously cold. We then waited another 20mins and my meal still had not come, despite all of the other tables being served multiple times. We asked to cancel the second meal and they did offer us a free dessert, but I don't like eating dessert before dinner haha. The dish then did come out and it tasted great. It just would have been nice if they had warned us of the wait beforehand, or even just come to our table and said 'wont be long' while we were waiting. Anyway, my rant is over now.

The location was okay, it was about a 10min walk to the main stretch if bars/restaurants with a couple of closer places.

All in all, it was an okay hotel but I think there are better options for the price.
On our second day, we moved to another similarly priced hotel with a pool.

This could be made into a wonderful hotel but it is in need of renovation as the rooms are scruffy. The shower was good, comfortable bed and air conditioning but you get 2 bent coat hangers on a hook and no stowage space for your suitcase. The decking overlooking the river was a good spot for a group meal and the breakfast was average. Service at dinner was slow and the staff need training to bring more than one drink at a time.

Reception staff were friendly and welcomin

Room Tip: They all have stunning views so no need to worry about this - some of our party had to change rooms...

We just stayd there for one night, but it was very good. Everything looks new, the rooms are very big and the service staff was really friendly with good english.
The breakfast was very delicious and it had a wide variety of food. I would definetly go again if I could and this hotel has everythin which I would expect for the room price and hotel category.

We stayed here for 2 nights and did not regret it.The view from our room and from the restaurant was superb,
We had breakfast and dinner twice - with a spectacular sunset - just next to the river. It was quiet at night.
There were two chairs and a small table on our balcony.
Wifi worked well in the lobby.
You can walk to the town or to the other side of the river.
