“Beach Bungalow Feeling for 4****Price”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

Ngapali Beach is expensive. Which doesn´t mean that the hotels here are of a high standard. the Royal Beach Motel is a good example for that. for 85 usd u get an upstairs room in a house of 4 rooms (means that you can hear your neighbours talk through the walls), facing the seaside. everything looks like a cheap (maybe 20-25 usd) beach bungalow in Thailand. And it lacks practically everything: no AC, no TV, no fridge/minibar, no room safe, no telephone, just an old fan and a moskito net. Also the already well known Naphthalene smell will enjoy your nostrils. The real plus is the super friendly and helpful crew, a balcony and the really good breakfast buffet (though u get just the same dishes every day).

my tip: stay at pleasant view resort in a gorgeous designed, perfectly equipped room for 120 usd [--] or visit the beaches of Thailand.

The Royal Beach Motel is a small hotel in a great location set back a few metres from Ngapali beach. There is just a small palm grove sheltering the hotel from the golden beach. Rooms are well appointed with hot water. No air-con but the sea breeze means that this is generally not needed. No TV since there is no electricity except during hours of darkness.

Good staff who interect well with guests. Buffet breakfast is served in restaurant overlooking the sea,

This property offers very basic accomodation and is not for everyone. In truth, that can be said of the whole country. For two open-minded, experienced travellers on a tight budget, it proved perfect.

Ngapali beach is idyllic and uncrowded. It is one of the finest beach destinations in the Myanmar and boasts several well-spaced resort properties. The Royal Beach Club is the southernmost, furthest from the airport, and at $35/night, the least expensive from what we saw. For comparison, next door is the Amata Resort - a lovely property with the western amenities and prices to match ($125 to $400).

You have to forego many usual comforts to save so much. The Royal Beach has no pool, gym, tennis court, bar, evening show tv/radio, phone or hot running water. Oh yes, like most of the country, electricity is not allways available.

Staff are friendly and helpful. On request, hot water can be brought to the rooms, but we didn't learn that until our last day. Breakfast is provided, buffet-style each morning. Other meals are available at extra charge at the hotel restaurant, other resorts, or at a number of private operations a short walk from the property. We found the food very good, for Myanmar (not a gastronomic destination!).

There's not a lot to do here. We explored the nearby Jade Taw fishing village (be cautious renting a bicycle - I lost a pedal miles into the journey), walked the shoreline regularly, enjoyed the company of a diverse international clientelle and read a lot. That's just what we needed after weeks of intensive, self-directed exploration.
