“Trip to the Golden Mount Kyaikto”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

The location of this hotel is the best in the area, no questions, its about a 10 minute walk to the Golden Mount, there is also a great terrace were you have a magical view of the Golden Mount. The staff are really friendly and accommodating and they have managed to get Wi-Fi up there! The room itself and bathroom weren't amazing, a little grubby and the air conditioning in the room wasn't great. The breakfast was ok, but not amazing.

I stayed 10 Mar 2014. I rejected 2 deluxe rooms because of filth and condition, before reluctantly accepting the third. Sink was badly cracked. Walls were cracked and ugly. Carpet was totally threadbare. Not even complementary water. Hotel was in a generally dirty and run down condition. ( I took plenty of photographs). Worst breakfast I had in Myanmar. Staff were rude and unhelpful which is very unusual for Myanmar. Smirked at each other when I complained.
Would never stay here again.

We only stayed at this hotel as we wanted to be at the top of the Golden Rock mountain for sunrise and sunset, and the Mountain Top hotel was unfortunately full. Definitely book as much in advance as possible and get into the Mountain Top hotel if you can as this seemed much nicer when we used their bar for a drink.

The Kyaik Hto hotel was an incredible $121 for a horrible basic room with a dirty bathroom with hairs on the floor, so it clearly hadn't even been cleaned properly. The walls were also ridiculously thin so you could hear everything from the rooms next door. Breakfast was also poor, with some unappealing rice and stirfry options, or just dry stale bread if you didn't fancy an eastern breakfast. It is good to stay at the top of the Golden Rock, and if this 'hotel' was only $40 or so you wouldn't mind, but it is shockingly overpriced for what it is. The location however is excellent, only about 5 minutes walk from the Golden Rock (as is the Mountain Top hotel).

For good restaurant options, go down the stairs at the back of the Golden Rock where we found a nice Chinese restaurant but there were lots of options.

To start with the main reason why I give this hotel three stars: it's located a few minutes away from the Golden Rock: from the terrace you can enjoy the view. Another big advantage: few steps, contrary to Mountain Top Hotel (which is a better hotel). Apart from that: rooms are basic, but clean enough. Breakfast is a bit of a mess. Because it's mainly tourgroups that stay here it can be quite chaotic. But all in all, because of it's location, and because that's the reason why you're there in the first place, bear with the basic rooms. The view will make up for it.

I'm glad we spent the night at the top of the mountain but to be honest this is probably one of the worst hotel I've ever been. It's very expensive for what it is and the restaurant is simply a scam but if I had to go to the Golden Rock again and if the other hotel nearby would be fully booked, I'd stay there again: no other choice!

This has to be the most profitable hotel in the country (considering the base investment) but our guide said that most of the money goes to the people handling the access/maintenance of the pagoda/village and surroundings. I would indeed like to think that tourist's money helps locals on their pilgrimage to the Golden Rock but, honestly, with those rates, the whole mountain would be today in Gold..

The best place to stay would be at the base town, but there are no night buses up to the rock, so you wouldn't be able to see the pre-dawn offerings. There isn't much to like except for the location, but I didn't stay long enough to let problems get on my nerves. Eat at the fairly good family restaurant across the street. It's cheaper. All the restaurants up here are expensive but then again you don't exactly see a lot of farms up here either, so everything has to be hauled up in trucks just like your butt.

Room Tip: Stay in town, or don't stay at all. Just keep moving on to some other more interesting spots in...

Our room was small, dirty, with dead insects/flies/mosquitoes/bugs all over (and the stains they left when they were killed), stuffy (despite the fact that it was cold outside, we still had to leave the portable AC unit (not very efficient nor powerful) on all night) and yet the most expensive of our entire trip (on par with a great resort room in Ngapali). You pay for the view and more importantly for the chance to visit the Golden Rock at sunset and sunrise, which, to us, was worth the money for the room, the uncomfortable truck rides up and down the mountain and the ugly neon lights all around.

If you can, leave most of your stuff in Yangon if you go back the day after (we left it with the agency that helped us organize the trip, Myanmar Delight). The walk from the truck station to the hotel is not that long (~10 mins) but it's much easier if you only have a small backpack than large suitcases (and you don't need to ask for help and pay for it).

We had dinner in front of the Mountain Top hotel and it was nothing to write home about. Breakfast at the hotel was decent, with noodles, fried rice, fried eggs, etc.
