“An oasis of comfort, hospitality and the best food I had in Sri Lanka”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2013

I cannot recommend this hotel strongly enough. Nuwan runs a truly wonderful establishment and although i left after 5 days on an exciting trip around the rest of the island I was really sad to leave. The rooms are built around a central courtyard with scented frangipani trees giving a relaxed and shady place to sit and unwind after a day exploring the area. The service was subtle but thoughtful. For instance as soon as I was back in the house a cup of tea made just the way i like was suddenly there for me. Nuwan is very knowledgeable about the local area and gave very helpful tips on where to go and what to see.
I always took the Sri Lankan option for breakfast and dinner and enjoyed what turned out to be the best food I experienced on the island. There were different types of rice and it was cooked in different ways. Each breakfast had a plate full of luscious tropical fruits as well as several delicious sauces - and dinner was a cornucopia of flavours, textures and ingredients. The cooking is superbly handled by Prema who cooks on a cinnamon fire and smiling Sashi - he helps out all round. Truly this was the best food that i had on the island.
All rooms are decorated in tasteful antique local furniture, beautifully kept and it was pleasing to get mosquito nets over the beds just in case a mosquito escaped the coils thoughtfully placed in all areas.
My room had an open roofed outdoor shower which was great fun to use when there were monsoon rain showers!
Simply wonderful.
Do go, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed similar but with individuality will no doubt vary slightly.

Just returned from a stay at this wonderful house, having traveled from the airport the car stopped at what looked like a rather unimposing house, the gate opened to be greeted buy the smiling face of the owner Nuwan and my bag was whisked away by the house boy once inside its like entering a different world, the house has a large courtyard which is surrounded by rooms all of which are sumptuously furnished with antique furniture My room had a king size bed,and a fascinating but very private outside shower room.
Breakfast and dinner each day was served either in the huge lounge which has a small dining table or in the main dinning room.Dinner each evening was freshly prepared by the wonderful cook using fresh ingredients which came either from the garden at the rear or the local market.
The house is very near to the beach and within walking distance of the main town,Nuwan has a regular tuk- tuck driver that he uses for guests should you wish to travel to Marissa which has a fabulous beach.
Nuwan has a great deal of knowledge about the area and will willingly advise you about the best places to visit.and will provide transport for longer journeys. Both the housekeeper and house boy were courteous and friendly and keep the place immaculate. All in all a unique place to stay and I will certainly be returning when I next visit Sri Lanka.

In the busy Weligama town this old house with its beautiful rooms, furnishings and peaceful courtyard garden make this a superb place to chill and relax... the bedrooms are comfortable and the main reception is stunning...
The owners really have created a grand home... and the staff make you feel so at home, it was the perfect place to base a few trips from.. and returning "home to a real Sri Lankan dinner cooked in the traditional way was just wonderful.. I will be back for certain.

Robin Hill is a tastefully restored Governor's Villa, about 5 minutes walk from Weligama town and the Beach. The rooms are very well presented and there is a completely relaxed feel about the whole place. Weligama is a fishing village, so the beach isn't great, but it's only a short hop to Marissa, which has a lovely beach.

That's the boring bit - what sets this place apart is the service! This is more like a home-stay than a guest house, with only one group of guests at a time. This you means you receive an exclusive and personal 'butler' service from Nuwan (the owner - who is a fountain of knowledge) and the Sri Lankan food that Prema provides for breakfast and in the evening is simply magical.

The evening meal takes around 4-5 hours to prepare, so you need to request in advance, and is all done from fresh ingredients, many of them grown organically from the garden. This knocks the socks off most of the food you will get served in restaurants and is highly recommended.

The only down-side to this is, as you would guess, the price. At $75 per person, per night, in Sri Lanka terms it isn't cheap (of course these costs may change in the future, but this is what it cost us). However this kind of exclusive service if experienced elsewhere would cost considerably more.

The only other comment is that there is no Air-Con. When we stayed it was very hot, which meant that even with the fans blowing the room was quite stuffy (we were on the ground floor). There is an upstairs room which seemed much more airy, but this was undergoing repairs when we stayed, so I can't comment on what this was like in the evenings.

This was a relaively minor concern though, which can easily be put into context as I would definitely consider staying here again when I next visit Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: There is an upstairs suite that seemed very airy and the best choice. This wasn't available when...

Robin Hill is a beautiful restored villa where you feel like the master of a specious house where every activity has its own well designed space: large bedroom, beautiful dining room, luxurious salon and quiet courtyard to read and relax. The service is butler like and the food delicious.
The house is in a suburb of a small lifely fishers town so there is lots to experience of genuine Srilanka life during walks. Situated in town also produces some noise from traffic but everybody goes to sleep after nine it seems.
Waligama has a beautiful wide bay but no bathing beach. 10 minutes with a tuk-tuk brings one to a superb beach and Galle is only half an hour away.
