“The House of the Soul Surfer!”
Review of Surf 'n Lanka

Surf 'n Lanka
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Staying at Surf 'n Lanka was the highlight of our visit to Sri Lanka. It is a surf school run by Manju who is a great surfer and inspirational surf teacher, and his wife who cooks delicious Sri Lankan food – this combination makes it hard to leave their surf house. We were going to stay one night and ended up staying for a week! Their four adorable children were such a joy to be around and added to the enjoyment of staying there. They all taught us so much about the Sri Lankan way of life and the local culture.

There is a great atmosphere in the house, it is authentic and feels more like staying in a family home. The surfboard selection ranges from longboards to minimals and some short boards. It was such an honour to meet Manju, he is such a lovely, genuine person. We nicknamed him 'soul surfer' and 'surf guru' because, his knowledge of surf and the sea is very inspiring, and he really takes his time to explain the techniques and philosophy of surfing. His staff are great fun and have a good sense of humour. We are intermediate surfers, and he gave us a lot of useful tips about the local surf spots and technical advice to improve our surfing.

Manju is great surfing teacher and awesome person - very hospital, friendly and helpful. As well, he knows a lot of interesting things and not only about surfing. His house - is the pearl harbour for surfers and those who just would like to learn how to surf: amazing atmoshere, friendly and interesting people, cozy space and awesome food from his wife - the best you could even dream to eat at Sri Lanka. With Manju you will stand up on your board within the first half of hour of you first lesson and will be surfing freen waves and take a real pleasure of it within few lessons. His camp contains all kinds of boards and everybody will find any he needs or prefer. And there is brilliant place inder palms and trees to chill out between surfing sessions on the chair watching virgin beach and waves of the Indian ocean.
Surf' N' Lanka is the place where you are going to come back and where you would like to spend much more time than you planned before. And just look at prices - you won't find such great offer anywhere at Sri Lanka - believe me, I was searching. Hospitality - is what Manju's life and business is based on.

The lesson with Manju was my first taste of suffering and it was incredible! Manju is very calm, clear and gives a sense of security in the water. he talks about the physical technique and feeling the motion of the waves... I definitely recommend him as a teacher! I was able to stand and surf by the end of our 1 and a half hour class. I continue coming to Surf n Lanka for few more days to rent a board and enjoy the beautiful beach, friendly vibes, kind people and of course the amazing waves at Weligama.

Manju and his team are extremely nice, patient guys and did a great job of training my wife and I how to surf. We had four days and took a lesson with them on the first day. They were patient and equipped us with the basic skills to enjoy the following days. Rather than potentially making more money on us from lessons they said it wasn't needed, rather encouraging us to just keep practicing on our own. On the final day they suggested a slightly more advanced board.

We could not have felt any more at home and comfortable trying something new and challenging. If you're going to Weligama and want to try surfing, look no further than Manju and the team at Surf n' Lanka.
