“Superb ocean view, great accomodation, friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2012

Just returned from my 2-week vacation spent in this hotel. It was a great time and I am so glad we chose this place to stay. Before we went I read something about the construction going on just next door and was a bit worried, but it turned out to be OK - the noises never disturbed us, and the site is actually to the side of the hotel so it does not spoil the view by any means.
The hotel stands right on the ocean, so you can have breakfast enjoying the magnificent view and sea breaze. We were staying in a villa which was just perfect - huge bathroom with a hot water shower and a bathtube, nice clean room with lots of space, two separate wardrobes which we liked so much as we are two girls with lots of clothing :) The big advantage is that Wi-Fi internet is available all over the hotel territory - in the room, at the pool, at the restaurant, everywhere - so we could share the sea view with our frinds on Skype :)
The staff was so friendly, everybody welcoming you all the time! Special thanks to Katerina who was so helpful with just everything. We also enjoyed some massage spa treatments which were just amazing, you'd stay relaxed for another couple of days and at such a good price. Don't miss this opportunity. I will defenitely recommed this place to anyone for premium-class service and great ocean location. Would love to come again some time!

We have enjoyed a beautiful stay in Weligama Bay resort during 1st Nov to 14 th Nov 2012 and it was the best time we ever had!
The hotel location is perfect: right on the beautiful beach of Weligama with Weligama village only 5 min drive.
The rooms are clean and spacious, A/C and the cozy atmosphere of the place make you feel safe and right at home! The staff is super friendly and nice and the spa center has one of the best massages ever.
The place is perfect to travel with your partner or with kids!

This is a nice and cosy place with newly built chalets. The room rates are high, and the food is good but i guess not worth the price. We could not enjoy a buffet as all meals were set menu s. Meals are tasty, but lack variety.
The people are friendly.
The pool was a small one.The Hotel does not boast of a large garden as it is built in a small plot of land, but the beach is isolated and next to the hotel is the sunday fish market with all the boats lined up.
The flower vase inside room had mosquito s breeding.Nobody has bothered to clean up or change the water.

Nice place to stay at Weligama Bay. surf-spot directly in front of the Hotel. Unfortunately the just built a hotel next door while we stayed there.....so there was a little bit noise and the sea-view was a little bit damaged by the building site. And there is some street noise, but compared to other places in Sri Lanka it was nothing to get worried about.

Staff is very good.....rooms very clean....

Just the price compared to other Asian countries is very very high!

A group of us stayed here as a family holiday in April 2012 after we booked it from reading great reviews on TripAdvisor. When we first drove up, got settled, and went to the restaurant I have to say we were really disappointed.

However, the biggest complaint we had was that there is something "off" with the hotel. For every pro there is a con. The staff are great; the food is horrible. The beach is wonderful; the pool is way too small. The rooms are okay (3 stars at most) but there is a HUGE construction site next door that is loud and ruins all the views. The traffic from the road also wakes you up at 7am every morning. The private yoga classes, which you have to book in advance, are nice, but the spa was closed the whole time we were there.

With just a little more effort (as a previous reviewer mentioned) this hotel could be a lot better. The atmosphere is just a bit dry.

If you are making a long haul to Sri Lanka, I would not recommend this hotel. But if you are going for a weekend and want to stay at a moderate place on a nice beach, then Weligama Bay Resort would work for you.

Having stayed in 2 great properties prior to coming to weligama(in order to go whale watching from mirissa).I was not expecting too much of this hotel especially after reading some of the previous poor reports on tripadvisor.
However i like to think i give a balanced view and i enjoyed the 2 days we spent here.We stayed in the bungalows which were great.
Yes the train sometimes wakes you early in the morning ,but the track runs close to all the beach hotels on the south coast.
The beach is the highlight ,the hotel fronts onto the best part of a great surfing beach ,with warm indian ocean water and good waves ,surfing lessons available nearby at good prices-gutted i only found that out the morning we left.
The food was fine ,not great ,but not dreadful.
Breakfasts were also absolutely fine.
The only slight negative would be the lounging area around the pool is small and when busy there are not enough loungers.
Staff were charming ,probably a bit pricey for what it is ,but enjoyed my time here.

I'd been wanting to visit the Weligama/Mirissa area for a while - primarily to take a peek at the Blue Whales that migrate down there between November and April - which I'd missed the last two seasons.

Finally I managed to get the timing right, and the school calender allowed for my little lad to accompany me mid March.

I'd heard good reports about Weligama Bay Resort, and being a less developed area, and traveling with a 5 year old boy, there are certain things such as safety, cleanliness etc that are musts for us.

On arrival to the hotel (its not really a 'resort' !) - we were greeted with smiles and a relaxed attitude. Beautiful reception area, which is open to the garden and beyond that the beach and ocean. We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was very large, and clean. Bathroom huge, with a massive bath tub in the middle! A lovely balcony, the length of the room and overlooking the garden/ocean with wide panoramic views was absolutely stunning.

Right next door - lots of digging and drilling! Seems the foundations of a 120 room Marriott hotel is well on the build! The noise was no bother to us as for most of the day we were out. The fact that Marriott is building a new hotel is testament to this gorgeous, as yet uncommercialised bay area, has definite potential - I don't think it will remain a secret for too much longer . . . lets hope the area doesn't become spoilt!

We were on BB - here's where the hotel is slightly odd! - and personally I don't feel they're quite deserving of a 5 star property (although 5 star prices are definitely charged!!)
- One outside area, outside the main restaurant, which is fine but: Buffet breakfast layout needs improving drastically! There is limited choice (although adequate for us personally) - but for a 5 star property, I would expect a more varied selection of local produce... Coconut water, papaya juice, water melon, mango.... there was normally one juice each morning and a cordial - but could have been more. There was small selection of cakes.... no croissants, or bread rolls. Curd and honey each morning was available, for the hot buffet.. 1 curry selection, sausages, baked beans, scrambled egg or boiled egg. The Omelette chef took his position right in front of the seating area - making it a little too warm for those tables closest to him!

The Layout could have been much better - although there is a genuine lack of space to provide a lavish spread - but to have a cold plate, or fruit salads/yoghurts etc on ice would help - and covered dishes - bit off putting to see cakes covered in flies ... these things you expect from a 5* property.

We didn't take an evening meal in the restaurant, although had a la carte lunches, or evening room service - but felt, with more effort, such as a seafood night, a barbeque, afternoon teas... lots of additional treats could have been on offer to promote the area, and keep clients on the property, and making use of the fabulous location.

The staff we found very friendly and very helpful - they're obviously happy workers.. but it did seem a little short on staff - when we went the hotel was fully booked, so at that capacity, they could have done with a couple more room boys and waiters.

Room service/cleanliness - was fine, but seemed to all fall on the sagging shoulders of only one gentleman!

The bathrooms, .. well - does size matter?? They are large - but its a little empty! It seems the minimalist decor approach was the goal ... normally I'm a fine of this.. but the bathrooms here just seemed empty of facilities to live up to the 5* mark. In the shower there was a glass bottle in the tray (very dangerous, very slippery!) marked 'shampoo' - another unmarked.
On the sinks vanity space (double sinks) - but looses any wow factor with a lack of all those little bits and pieces that we all like. There was a shower cap I seem to recall - in a white bag, - maybe something else - but not memorable - so that impact not there. A lovely big bath - but where was the nice oil? the sachets of relaxing salts? The bubble bath ??? I think you get the picture!

Other room amenities - well, we found the little kettle and strips of Nescafe sachets - bizarrely - tea bags - re-packed in little plain white bags titled ' weligama bay tea'. BUT - the tea was Dilmah... now, to me, the bigger impact would have been made to have a nice little box, with a selection of tea's in the original Dilmah packets ... after all, this is the big brand - not Weligama Bay!... and a 5 *... maybe would have been nice to have a little filter flask and ground coffee.

So, for us - a great location (yes we did see Blue Whales - about 20 of the beauties - will write a separate review), nice friendly staff, but no wow factor in the property itself - but with a bit more effort could be made very special. This is the most expensive per nightly cost hotel in Sri Lanka I've stayed in, and there have been many, even with the doubled post-war prices, all come in about a third less than this nightly prices at Weligama Bay - and in my opinion, its not worth the price.
