“Great hotel, excellent service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2010

We spent 4 nights in the Weligama Bay Resort in January and were really happy with our stay there. We had a villa and the rooms were lovely and very clean and modern.
Service was fantastic, whenever we needed something they reacted very quickly and were happy to help us out with any questions we had. If anything they were a little too attentive as the cleaners were quick to clean the rooms, even if we were still there.

We had the breakfast buffet every morning and dinner in the hotel one night. Although the buffets weren't as extensive as other hotels we stayed in, the food was still very good, and the cocktails were lovely!

I can't really talk about value for money as it was part of a package arranged with our driver, so overall for us it was, however looking at the rack rates the rooms are quite expensive, though I imagine that you can bargain them down, and agents will get better rates than you can get direct.

Overall I'd definitely recommend the Bay Resort!

We were traveling with 2 years old baby and this place is just perfect. The hotel looks like it is bright new and is designed in a tasteful modern way but keeping the Sri Lankan traditions. We stayed in one of the bungalows next to the pool hearing the ocean right outside of our terrace. We felt very welcomed and the personal were able to fulfill all our special needs that we and mostly the baby need. Specially we'd like to point out the hotel's kitchen that offered great seafood /grilled fish in a banana leave/ as well as the local Sri Lankan specialites /Curry with prawns/. The stuff in the restaurant were flexible and very relaxed although one might think that sometime there was no hurry to get your bill. Nice and slow. The atmosphere of the evening dinners especially was all that you dreamed of on an exotic vacation. But what we enjoyed the most was a glass of wine in the night pool listening to the ocean and knowing that the baby was sleeping silently few steps away.

We stayed 1 night in this resort for New Years Eve. We stayed in the hotel section not the bungalows. The rooms were quite nice with balconies with great views. Comfortable bed and bedding. Nice pool and beach was okay. No explanation upon arrival as to what the hotel offered nor was there anything in the room regarding info on the hotel or what to do in the surrounding area.
We did not feel the service was up to the standard of the hotel. Breakfast buffet was disappointing to say the least, we had better buffets at $50/night establishments. New Year Eve Dinner Buffet was also disappointing, food was totally overcooked and some foods not edible. Service for food was extremely slow even for a sandwich we waited 45 mins.
Overall paying $260 for 1 night at this hotel was far more than it was worth. If you can get a much lower price than we did then maybe its worth it.

We stayed here for 4 nights at short notice and what a find! Only recently opened, it has to be one of the best locations on the south coast. We had a Garden suite which was beautifully fitted out and extremely spacious. The garden led onto the magnificent Weligama Bay, great for walking and full of interest-fishermen, surfers etc. The swimming here was excellent.. The food was very good and as with many hotels in Sri Lanka the chef would prepare what you wanted and when you wanted it within reason. For a change try the lovely hotel Neptune restaurant next door. Our only concern would be where they would locate all the sun loungers if they were busy.

Stayed in bungalow. Very good rooms, clean, comfortable and well furnished. Lovely locals working there, helpful, gentle and very polite. The hotel is very close to a busy and noisy road. Bungalows are more quiet then the main building. Limited grounds. Good swimming pool. Beach is not the best or the cleanest in the area, with fishing boats pretty near. Kitchen has a lot of teething problems. Hotel was half full and it was not unusual to wait for over an hour for basic food.

We just spend a ten days in Weligama Bay resort. It was few days before the official opening, so few things we not completely finished. Swimming pool for example. On the other hand, the hotel was still half empty. Privacy was a big benefit. Actually, that was it, we were looking for. So let’s review it:
The hotel premises consist of a bigger two-storied building and several bungalows in the garden, which adjoins directly to the beach of the Weligama Bay. There is also a swimming pool and a restaurant in the garden.
Transport: By air, of course, airport at Colombo. A hotel minibus is waiting here, taking the guests to the hotel. The journey takes about 4 hours (170 km, 105 miles) because the coastal road is lined with an almost continuous build-up area, which does not allow faster driving. The minibus is air conditioned, the driver points out to some interesting things you can see from the car, or he possibly even stops.
Accommodation: The hotel offers a wide spectrum of very quality rooms, from simple ones just with a shower to Royal apartments with luxury above standard equipment. We stayed in one of two Junior Suite. I wish to have apartment of this size! We had the possibility to see other rooms as well.
The style of the rooms is very austere, modern, with simple serviceable shapes, however in high quality, making use of local materials, like teak wood for example.
The apartments we stayed in had a separate bedroom, a large sitting room and a spacious bathroom, a terrace along the whole length of both rooms. The bedroom was spacious, a double bed with separate, very comfortable mattresses, bed-side lamps with dimmable light. There were enough wardrobes. The sitting room was furnished with a dining table and chairs, a coffee table with armchairs, a writing desk and a lamp. Passionate readers would just miss a comfortable armchair with a standing lamp or at least a standing lamp at the coffee table. The bathroom with a small dressing table was very spacious, with two washbasins with a mirror wall, a shower and a cast, very big bath. You can enjoy a special experience while taking a bath when you can watch even the waves of the ocean, looking straight from the bath through the glassed-in door and across the living room. You can drink cooled drinks from the milibar, or you can have anything brought by the room service.
Room Service: The staff is disposed, very fast and responsive, you do not have to repeat your request every day. The cleaning is done when the guests are not present, it is thorough, paying attention to the detail – for example flowers in a bowl with water, or a living flower on the pillow.
Baths: Part of the hotel is also the baths, an oasis of peace, pleasant scent and slow movements. I cannot but recommend an one-hour massage of the whole body. Harmony, essential oils being aplied. The masseurs are professional, smiling, if the client does not want to talk, they are silent. The offer is very wide.
Reception: There is permanent service by competent workers. The space of the reception hall is airy, furnished with taste, with possibility of sitting down.
A beautiful experience is tea at five on the hotel terrace. If you add a glass of gin, you can experience the essence of the colonial atmosphere.
Restaurant: The restaurant building with a large outside terrace is located directly on the beach, just a few steps from the ocean. Furnished with solid dark wooden furniture, the restaurant has a good-class look. The disposition of tables comes up to a restaurant of many stars, simple table utensils are elegant. The staff is well-groomed, they work flawlessly and invisibly. Nice is the appropriate waiter attending at the table. In our case, there was the same waiter for the whole stay, to whom you did not have to repeat the same thing every time. A real strawberry on the cake was already the wine pouring when the waiter was holding the bottle in the serviette in such a way that the diner could see the label for the whole time. It is necessary to add that the wines were of extraordinary quality and of an unexpectedly obliging price.
The local cuisine is based on traditional seaside foods of this area. In the offer there are fish, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, poultry meat and things like that. The portions are always served with proper rich vegetables and fruit trimming. Recommendable are for example fried prawns covered with coconut, or local very popular rice and curry. We were given a special experience by the restaurant manager, who brought two living freshly caught lobsters straight to the beach for us and offered them for dinner. They were extraordinarily tasty and very tastefully prepared.
The drink list is of quality, besides standard soft drinks, local freshly squeezed fruit juices can be recommended. Even the wine connoisseur will be surely satisfied and a beer lover will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the local Lion beer.
Beach: The part of the beach adjoining to the hotel premises is always clean and permanently maintained. The long beach of the Weligama Bay has gold sand and is lined with palm tree groves. The fine sand reaches far into the sea, sloping down into pleasantly high, but not dangerous at all, waves. This rough sea is not suitable for swimming, however; therefore the hotel provides also a swimming pool, right after the beach line, shaded with palm trees.
The beaches are not covered with beach deckchairs or sunshades; these get prepared by the hotel staff gladly on request, however. Extraordinarily romantic are the walks on the wet sand when you can find shells of unusual shapes, you can take a view of remarkable narrow fishing vessels or admire the art of surfing performed by local boys.
Service: The hotel offers a plenty of activities and trips you cannot miss. The offer is attractive and it surely contains everything to satisfy the client. Also the realization is on a high level as long as it is provided directly by the hotel, of course. If the activities are provided externally, for example boating on the river, or perhaps sailing in the bay, the client will meet with ignorance and untidiness, in a worse case even laziness of the native inhabitants. Thus the trip may then get complicated or even made impossible. However, we suppose that after the experience the hotel management has already talked to the suppliers or even exchanged them.
Facit: Everybody who wants to enjoy being spoiled agreeably in luxury and adventurous experiences in an exotic country as well should not fail to visit the hotel Weligama Bay Resort in Sri Lanka. Yes, it is not budget hotel. But the price – performance ratio is pretty beneficial. Especially if you compare with resorts of similar class nearby.
