“Absolutely fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2010

We stayed in the Norwood bungalow for three nights and wished we could have stayed longer. I didn't realize the four bungalows which make up the tea trails were so far apart, so the bungalow is effectively your hotel and feels like home from home. The staff are extremely accommodating, with nothing being too much trouble. The food was fantastic and the chef seemed genuinely interested in creating dishes to suit individual tastes. Andrew Taylor's tour of the tea plantation was absolutely brilliant - very interesting and entertaining. I understand that Norwood is due to close for a re-vamp shortly though there was little to suggest it needs it, and highlights the standards they are trying to keep. The only blemish on the whole stay was the fact that our tour driver, whom we had been with all week, was not made to feel welcome. I understand that there were probably cultural issues, but we felt quite uncomfortable that he was made to feel inferior. Apparently the small bath towels are being replaced during the re-vamp. Otherwise, a fantastic, relaxing stay and the opportunity to get the laundry cleaned a great bonus. Can't wait to return.

Fantastic! Everything about it was wonderful. Tea Trails comprises 4 planter's bungalows spread over acres of pristine beautiful landscape - Tea Estates, rolling hills, a perfect lake, tiny churches en route - a slice of a byegone era.

The bungalows are beautifully restored with exquisite gardens- you can rent by the room, or book the whole bungalow, depending on how many you are. The package is fairly expensive, but all inclusive -this includes not only fantastic meals (breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner) , but also unlimited cocktails and drinks throughout the day. It also includes laundry which is a bonus! The staff is polite, friendly and very attentive. The chef will consult you every day while planning the menu.

You also have the opportunity to visit the local tea factory for a very interesting tour. The only downside is the 4 hour winding journey from Colombo - but well worth it once you get there!

Hi
We stayed at Tea Trails in July with our young daughter - only 10 months old at the time.
The staff in Castlereagh were excellent at looking after us all - especially Susanth and Mahendra. I hope that I have the right spelling.
The chef cooked special meals for our daughter at no extra cost and they were beautifully presented.
Tea Trails is not cheap but the best thing is that once you get there you do not have to think about anything.
We would love to return.

I would think the whole point of this site is for guests to independently review a hotel, and to offer their personal opinion s,from the response of Tea trails I would have to saythis say this was wrong, these obvivously do not not want to take on board what was a genuine guest complaint about our stay their.During our stay in Sri Lanka we stayed in 7 different hotels and this was the only the only hotel we felt disapointed in all areas especially in when comparing the cost to value ratio. the agressive response from the any negative reviews on the site tell me the Tea Trails management are obviously not listensing to their guests and for the cost of the room per night need to.
I listed when requesting a room that we would be 2 adults & 2 children. when paying $500+ euro a night I would expect the hotel to tell me prior if this room was not big enough to fit in 4 people how am I to now ????

it terms of the laundry , the management is misunderstanding my my complaint it was a general ,cant be bothered attitude by the butler that dispointed us- particularly when it states laundry is free of charge.

It's hard to do Tea Trails justice - the most beautiful, tranquil, friendly and unique holiday experience my boyfriend and I have had. The food is exquisite, the service impeccable and the location idyllic. It looks pricey when you come to book (esp. for Sri Lanka), but it is excellent value. Full English breakfasts, tea in bed, 3 course lunches and 4 course dinners, with high tea in the middle and as much booze as you can manage! All the staff were friendly, helpful and incredibly polite (even when we changed our plans last minute, which must have caused some problems). Lots of walking (including trekking up the 5300 steps to Adam's Peak - a truly breathtaking experience, in every way), a lovely pool (if a little chilly in September) and the quietest, starriest nights I have encountered. I would also recommend the tour of the Tea Factory. We weren't keen as it sounded, well, a bit boring, but in actual fact it was very interesting and Andrew Taylor (who's descended f\rom Sir James Taylor) is engagingly enthusiastic about the whole process. We stayed at Norwood but I imagine the other bungalows are just as beautiful. You can arrange trips to other bungalows, and I wish we had, but we were a bit too relaxed (i.e. lazy). Highly recommended.

We stayed in Tientsin Bungalow part of a group of 4 bungalows superbly converted from old Tea Plantation Houses. Views are magical, wonderful walks through the tea terraces, it is like being in a Japanese painting!, and the level of care and comfort provided was 5 star. Food outstanding and delicious - breakfast on verandah, brand new swimming pool, better for lengths than playing in, but state of the art, with fruit bats at dusk, and lovely birds and flowers in the garden. Tennis court - clay too. Staff absolutely charming. Mountain bike rides fun. Tientsin has been newly done up and rooms have every luxury - vast colonial style, with huge baths etc. This bungalow is just a little further up the valley - 9 kms. than the others. I can't wait to go back!

We spent three nights at one of the Tea Trails bungalows. The house sits in a lovely terraced garden with a breathtaking view of the Hatton reservoir and the surrounding hills covered with manicured tea plantations. The small hotel has a luxurious charm and the experience is more like staying with friends for a country weekend. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, the staff, as with everyone we met in Sri Lanka, were charming and thoughtful. The food was outstanding.
The hotel is owned by a specialist tea plantation company and they offer a tour of the local tea factory which was fascinating and certainly not a "touristic" experience. We highly recommend Tea Trails for a relaxing few days in the high tea country.
