One of the best mid-budget guest houses we came across in Sri Lanka with the chef's Rice and Curry and the owner's seemingly insatiable desire to fulfil our every requirement the higlights.
The double room was basic but was recently decorated, had an en-suite, A/C and a fridge as promised. The room was secure and the surroundings very pleasant; breakfast (standard eggs, fruit plate, toast) is served on the decking overlooking the river and associated wildlife / banana boats.
We had one issue with the aircon in our first room (not working properly), but this was rectified immediately by moving us to another room. Also, Aluthgama is somewhere you should probably only spend one night (we spent two)...there isn't very much going on in the town, but it is worth seeing as we were the only visitors we saw in a very unspoilt part of the east coast.
That aside, there were a couple of higlights...the rice and curry was among the best we had and certainly the most reasonable price-wise, the owner, who speaks a tiny bit of English, dropped us at the train station after our stay...in his own car, and seeing a 4ft lizard crawl along the decking and into the river as we ate breakfast was awesome (but I can't promise this will occur daily!).More
