We decided to stay and Independant Bo's out of desperation as we had been travelling for 10 hours and it was getting dark. At a first glance from the beach, Independant Bo's looks incredibly funky, perched amongst the rocks above the beach. There are wooden platforms that serve as pathways between bungalows and the sitting areas and it is covered in trippy murals and colours.
It is managed by a friendly, yet incredibly opinionated western woman. Our room was literally hanging right over the beach which disapeared when the tide come in. And honestly, its nice to hear the waves crashing in the distance but being 2 metres above them is quite disturbing, not to mention deafening. When I finally did get to sleep, I had a nightmare that the room was being flooded and I was drowning.
The room was a simple bungalow with an extremly old and lumpy double bed and a single bed. There was an attached 'bathroom' with a shower, non-flushing toilet and nothing else (i.e. no sink).
The main issue we had with the place was the filth. Although the sheet on the bed was most likely put on clean, the mold growing on the pillows and mattress had seeped through and they stank. The whole room was very dirty and naturally being situated only metres over the crashing waves, everything was covered in a layer of salt that is obviously never properly cleaned, which makes for an itchy, uncomfortably night. And to make matters worse during the night, my husband was bitten by something on the bed, not sure what but he was in pain for a few days and we suspect it was a spider. Mosquitos were also quite prolific and the mossie nets above the bed were so dirty it was probably more of a health risk to touch them.
The other issue was security. Although a padlock was supplied for the main door, the balcony door did not lock at all. Anybody could have climbed up easily and walked in. Fortunately we had some chains and locks with us for bikes that we used to chain up the door in the morning while we went out looking for somewhere else to stay.
I think this place may interest people who are in Thailand to party and 'get out of their mind' (paintings of mushrooms features on the walls of our bungalow, if this is any indication). If you like to sit around debating outdated politics, philosophy (of sorts), the redundant role of NGOs in Asia and why vegetarians are stupid (to mention a few topics) this place may also be for you. But if you like any basic comforts and sanity, stay away. Also, the beach was dirty and it was clear that sewage was running straight into the sea out front. Be warned!
