On one side of the Sea Star are black rocks with a fern grotto forming seaside. On the other are nearly two miles of a pale, powder sand beach that can be three volleyball nets wide at low tide. That sand extends all the way out to the distant reef, as free of rocks as the beach. But there are no volleyball nets. The main beach entertainments during our stay were watching a young man scrub horses with sand in the surf and then seeing the horses roll in the surf, all four legs in the air, and then romp through the waves like puppies. At the far end of the beach is a palapa restaurant beside a large natural tide pool featuring 3’ sharks and some reef fish, all just for viewing -- not eating. A similar restaurant minus the tide pool but featuring chairs and a picnic table on the beach, is only about a quarter mile down the beach from the Sea Star.
Counting the Sea Star’s 4, there are only 6 rental rooms on the whole beach. Most days we had it all to ourselves.
The Sea Star’s four spacious rooms feature comfie king-size beds facing the sea and overstuffed chairs or a sofa at the foot of the bed that also face seaward. Yes, the wide glass doors open all the way and yes, the place is so safe and bug-free that you can leave those doors open to the sea breeze all night long, although the a/c is fully functional. The rooms also have a table, two dining chairs, and two sinks. One sink is in a very spacious counter between the w.c. and the shower. That faucet remains on only so long as you press on it. The faucet at the second sink is in the bar counter and works normally. The water is pleasantly warm, but not hot, and the plumbing all works. The only body products available during the Sea Star’s current construction phase are shower dispensers of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. There are plenty of plastic hangers with little hooks molded into them. The hangers remove so you can hang your wet stuff just about anywhere. The provided robes are so soft and fluffy you’ll want to pet them.
On each very large porch are two chairs, a table, and a stool. That’s where we enjoyed the Sea Star’s breakfast service. Press a button and within usually a minute someone will bring a fruit plate, a smoothie and, if you request it, a coconut. The staff member will hack open the coconut with a machete, insert a straw, and then take your breakfast order. The food will be delicious, cooked to your specifications, and arrive more than promptly.
On the beach are lounge chairs that easily accommodated my 37”-inseam legs and could accommodate even longer legs. (Talls, rejoice!)
If you’d prefer to do more than lounge or walk the beach, the Sea Star has plenty of boogie boards and float chairs. They’ll call a cab ($1 to anywhere on the island) to whisk you to excellent diving, snorkeling, or mirror-calm swimming on other beaches.
How could there be a “best” to save ‘til last? Try service. The place is staffed by congenial magicians who can and will do anything to enhance your delight. That includes cooking, bar tending, room service for nearly anything, providing island tours, and fetching and delivering to your room anything available on the island. Example: When we requested extra beach towels to pad the wooden chairs, they brought the towels immediately and a few hours later delivered twin bed size foam "mattresses" a few inches thick that made the chairs utter bliss. And they provide all such services with a grin and as much cheery chatting as you’d like in excellent yet liltingly creole-accented English.
For the less-than-sure-footed, there are two possible impediments to this unimaginable perfection: slippery tiles and stairs. Although the porches and walkways are non-slip, the room tiles are mirror slick. The second floor is a full flight up from the beach. There are several shorter flights, some with tall rises, from the second floor up to the office and cab stop. Railings are not yet installed. In all rooms there are two steps from the living area up to the bath area.
