“A welcome retreat from the crowded west side of Big Corn Island.”

If you are looking for 4-star resort luxury, Corn Island is not the place for you. Rooms are simple but fine. AC, no hot water. If you are going to Corn Island to spend a lot of time in your room, Paraiso is not for you. Beach is clean, w/ shady bungalows, lounge chairs, *excellent* bar service and irreverent entertainment in the form of the local kids swimming and playing in the water. Dining: the ceviche and nachos are highly recommended. Staff is professional and helpful. Family owners are about and interested in - and responsive to - your feedback.

We drove all over the island and this was really the best hotel we could find. Cute little houses, good beds, lots of space, nice showers. There's a restaurant on site and a beautiful beach in front. Don't forget the rest of the island is still developing and is poor. But if you can look through it you can see the beauty. Don't expect bargains over there, as it is an island and prices are quite high.

I was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. I am a well seasoned traveler throughout central america so I have pretty much seen it all. It was overpriced for the what the condition of the room. The restraunt was double the price of any of the other ones on the island. They just nickel and dimed you for everything. The electricity was out 10-16 hours a day. So why bother to pay for AC. That side of the island is mosquito infested. No easy acess to the beach beacause of the corral reefs. Got my foot infected the 1st day. I didnt read any of that in the bochure! Dont Go!!!!!!!

I stayed at the Paraiso with a friend and found this little hotel charming, well run by the Dutch owner and overall had a pleasant stay. However, Big Corn island and its facilities in general are not for the novice traveller as the island is very isolated and does not rate as a destination for the tourist looking for all amenities and great comfort. The atmosphere of the place makes the trip worthwhile and please do NOT miss the opportunity to snorkel with Dorsey Campbell who runs the Yellowtail Snorkeling Club. It is worth the trip by itself.... A true environmentalist with extraordinary knowledge of the sea. I will return there.

After traveling mainland Nicaragua for a week, we landed at Paraiso and couldn't be more pleased. Rooms are cabana-style, with air-con, comfy beds, hot water, hammock on your porch. Grounds emit relaxation, ocean is a few paces away, nice snorkeling right from Paraiso beach. We toured the island and couldn't find a better place. Owners support sustainable tourism and help raise the standard of living by heading non-invasive projects to improve school system, fresh water supply, etc. This isn't a Sandals destination, but an authentic Caribbean island experience.
We didn't want to leave!

To do:
Rent bikes ($5/day) and take your time exploring the island.
Dive/snorkel.
Go fishing (with Gary if he's in town :)
Hit Nico's on Sunday for the local clubbing experience.
Relax on the beach!

It may be owned by a couple of Dutch citizens, however, they have not brought any improvements to Big Corn. The hotel is a joke - bad location, narrow strip of property on a lousy beach, over-priced meals, uncomfortable rooms, etc., etc. Their website suggests that couples can plan a wedding at their beach...it would be their worst nightmare. Go to the Bahamas instead!

I would also recommend to skip over Big Corn and go somewhere else. Not worth your time and money. The island has ONE paved road (that circles the island) with tributary dirt roads take you to the different places. On the way to Hotel Paraiso our taxi encountered a construction crew that was building curbs for the dirt road. Since they mix the concrete by hand-shoveling, the mix took the entire width of the road. I asked the foreman to move some of the mortar so that the taxi could go through and the foreman told me that he wouldn't, that I could walk to my hotel from there. I told the taxi to go over the mortar mix or I would not pay to for the ride. He was apparently intimidated by the road crew because he told me that it was OK not to pay him. It took about 5 minutes for the crew to make some room for us to pass.

The point is: the locals do not care about the tourists! I am sure that you can better places than Big Corn...try Roatan.

Any positive reviews are most likely not real.

It is true, if you want Bahamas or Roatan luxury, than Corn Island is the wrong place to be.
Travelling has to be a genuine experience, not just an subjective observation.
If you want to have an authentic Caribbean travel experience which you can share with like-minded travellers, Corn Island is the place to be.
It is an undiscovered, undeveloped, authentic traditional Caribbean Island.

Since July 2008 a lot of things have changed. There is now a nice paved road to Paraiso.
In the mean time Paraiso was renovating an existing school and built a complete new school for the community. The programme for 2009 is the renovation of a next school and building a school for Hotel and Tourist management, a next line of income for an island who is now only depending on fishery.
For more information about our school and education project, please go to our website: www.paraisoclub.com and have a look under the tab “project”.
