“Great cabins”
Reviewed 11 May 2013

These cabins were really lovely, and a great base for spending a few days exploring Skaftafell National Park. They were warm and well equipped, with a great little kitchen and bathroom included. The location was beautiful, the place was clean and the wifi was free.

These cabins were cozy for 4 people, but they were really well-equipped, managing to fit a kitchen and a bathroom into the small space. The cabin itself was clean and tastefully designed, with wood panelling all around.

It's location is ideal if you want to travel around the Skaftafell National Park or go to see Jokulsarlon. It's great!

Our visit was in March of 2013. When planning our trip, we knew we wanted to stay near the Skaftafell National Park, but we did not want to camp because of the time of year. We found Lækjarhús, which was within our price range. This little “cabin” seemed to be new and was nice and clean. The distance is excellent for getting to Jokulsarlon Lagoon as well, which is an excellent place to hang out for the aurora borealis show with a great foreground for photographers. It is not optimal if you want to just walk out of the cabin to see the lights because it is facing to the south with mountains to the north. However, if you have a good rating on http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/Europe, then it may be possible (we had a 3 rating during our visit). The kitchenette comes with stocked pots, pans, dishes, and utensils. It is also heated. We brought our sleeping bags, pillows, and towel to save a little money. Make sure to find a grocery store in a larger city on the way to the cabin because the closest one is at least an hour or more away (for a decent selection of groceries). We stopped in Selfoss on our way through to stock up. I would definitely recommend to anyone with 4 travelers or fewer.

Simple. Clean. Great value for money.
Very friendly, helpful and kind owner.

Nearest place to eat is a 20 min drive.
Bring some groceries and eat in. The kitchenette is well equipped :)

The bunk beds are great fun.
And the chalet is insulated very well.

Great place to stay when travelling south.

Room Tip: There obviously is no fitness. But I can't undo the selection :$ So do your sit-ups and push-u...

We enjoyed our stay here and its location is excellent for exploring the area. Even with the cold wind howling and rain outside, the cabin remained warm and was very bright during the day. For 3 adults, the space was a little cramped and the hot water limited; the bathroom (the only privacy in the room) was also a bit tight. But the space utilization, modern/simple furniture (think IKEA in cabin format) and cleanliness of the place makes this an excellent base. The settlement in which this is located is also nice to explore.

Lækjarhús cabins are in the perfect location for exploring Skaftafell National Park. We stayed there for two nights and loved the peaceful picturesque setting at the base of the mountains.

The cabins are just off the ring road but an easy 15 minute drive to the main Skaftafell Park Information Centre, and 30 minutes drive from Jokulsarlon.

The cabins are basic but spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable.

Just remember to bring plenty of food and drink supplies with you, as there aren't many shops in the area!

Another five star review here for Lækjarhús. As others have mentioned, the cabins are clean, cozy and warm. Although the three cabins are next to one another, the thoughtful design of the cabins assures privacy and prevents you from having to look into a window of the neighboring cabin. Instead, you’re looking out across the fields to the ocean, or perhaps up at the beautiful cliffs that form the impressive backdrop of this quiet country property. The cabins are well-equipped and have just about everything that a small country cottage should have.

The cabins are located in a perfect location for exploring Skaftafell and the South East ‘Vatnajokull Region’. We took an amazing trip one day down the coast towards Hofn and took in the Jokusarlon lagoon, as well as the wild and empty back roads in the Heinaberg and Hoffell areas. The other day was spent hiking in the National Park at Skaftafell...both trips are highly recommended. And be sure to check out the turf roof church just down the road...it's one of only a handful left in all of Iceland!

Lastly, it should be noted that the proprietor, Eythor, is extremely accommodating and courteous, and he did a great job answering all of the questions I peppered him with.

If you plan on visiting Skaftafell, this is where you should stay!
