“CASTLE DURROW - A MUST EXPERIENCE”
Reviewed 30 October 2008

We had our wedding in Castle Durrow on Mon 13th Oct but it had been a year and a half in the planning.
Basically from day one the staff at the hotel were nothing more than fabulous. Marie the wedding co-ordinator in particular made everything so easy for us.
A good reference point of what this hotel is about is that we had 70 guests all of whom stayed in the hotel and every single one of them loved the place, the food, their rooms and the staff.

I honestly have stayed there 4 or 5 times now and every time your made to feel special - wedding or just a regular stay.

it is by far the best hotel in ireland - by a long stretch.

The castle and grounds are beautiful. Our room was gorgeous - large, four poster bed, high ceilings. They have a range of rooms - this was one of their best. Dinner was very good, as was breakfast. However, it was €310 for dinner, B&B for two. So at that price I felt that the in room TV should have had multi-channel reception (only the 4 Irish channels available). It was also somewhat irritating that the dinner menu was a restricted version of the normal dinner menu - a bit miserable given the price charged!

  • Liked — The castle feel - huge rooms, staircases, chandeliers!
  • Disliked — Beauty Salon - but no spa/pool.

This review is more about the food than anything else. We had dinner at Castle Durrow choosing from the set menu. To be honest we weren't all that excited as we had a drink in the bar first and the musty smell and dozens of bar flies was kind of overwhelming!
I chose a fish dish as did one of the other guests, and I'm sorry to say it was definitely off. The minute the waiter brought it near the table, the smell was overpowering. When I cut into it the middle was pink and freezing cold - it wasn't even cooked. I asked our waiter if I could have it a little more done, and to be fair he was very nice about it. But it came back the same. Both our fish dishes were undercooked and off.

The starters were ok-ish, same standard as pub grub. THe dessert was a total let down.

The service was alright - not fantastic but not awful.

The rooms were in need of a good clean and fresh decor. Will definitely not be going back! Way overpriced - save your money for somewhere else.

Stayed here one night end of August. Had previously been here for a wedding. We had a deluxe room and were on a Dinner, bed & Breakfast rate. The room was huge and nicely decorated. There was a wedding on the night we were there but it did not cause a problem for us. The food in the restaurant was excellent, had a few drinks in the bar afterwards. Bar man John was lovely, chatty & friendly. Enjoyed our stay and will be back for sure.

This hotel is housed in a gorgeous castle that was once a private residence. We stayed in a master bedroom with soaring ceilings, a beautiful canopy bed, huge windows, separate seating area and a nice bathroom. The room was romantic and gorgeous. The grounds are beautiful complete with a giant walled garden and numerous walking paths along a fairy tale river. There's not much in the town of Durrow but you're only about an hour and a half from Dulbin. The restaurant was quite good, but the service was quite slow. We would definitely go back.

Our friends got married and had there reception at Durrow Castle and we stayed as part of the weddding party.

We stayed at room 9 at the Stables. It is not a room, it is a 2 bedroom apartment. It is amazingly beautiful and huge.
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful with a working stables.

The hotel its self is of a high standard and everything was near enough perfect and if there were any problems the staff fixed and sorted them out for you right away.

As we were at a wedding, we had a set meal. The food was great, well cooked and full of flavour. The wine was good, the service great and professional.
Breakfast was great also.

It would not be the cheapest hotel in the world to stay in. I asked for info and was told that it costs up to Euro310 a night, dinner and breakfast included. But it is worth the money.

Pleasent suprise in the morning of finding out how little my bar bill was.
Expensive hotel, cheap bar.

We will return.

Have to say this was a very nice, very distinctive hotel.

I stayed there for a wedding for which the wedding party took every room in the place, and it was just the right size to give it an intimate feeling without being claustrophic.

The food was excellent, although the breakfast wasn't quite what I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, this was no bad thing...but was more of an interesting take on an Irish Breakfast than a hearty Irish breakfast.

Just a few things to note. If are in the "courtyard" area, turn on your fan heater as soon as you get there, and leave it on when you're out and about. Single glazing in this quarter means the rooms get cold rather quickly. Or, if you are in the newer quarter and attending a wedding, just be aware that it's a long and winding walk to the ballroom.

  • Liked — Distinctive, charming place. Full of character.
  • Disliked — Needed heater in the bedroom
