This restaurant could have been wonderful. The location on the terrace overlooking the harbour was perfect, the menu inviting and the food presentation was lovely to look at on the plate.
However, once sitting down you can expect a force-feeding which is designed only to get you away as fast as possible in order to fill your seat with somebody else. By this I mean that on both occasions we visited (we went back for more mussels) my partner had her plate removed while I was still eating. As for my plate, it was removed while I was still putting the last bite in to my mouth!! This is absolutely unacceptable in any restaurant, anywhere, least of all somewhere charging 40 Euro per head for two courses with some wine and water.
The mussels, as mentioned, were lovely but to my horror I had to send back linguine because it was undercooked, still hard in the centre! I know - pasta should be 'Al Dente' and I enjoy it that way - but I have lived in Italy for over a year and a half, eat out often and in that time NO pasta has ever been so undercooked.
Since monkfish can be really special, my partner did not hesitate to try it from the menu. This had huge bones - I mean 1 inch long and a centimetre thick - through it which the chef hadn't bothered to even attempt to remove. Yes, I know monkfish has bones, but I have eaten it beautifully prepared before and what they did to this was just a waste of good fish.
From sitting down we were pushed though our meal in 50 minutes - that's a drink, mussels for starters, then the mains, INCLUDING waiting for 10 minutes for my linguini to come back the second time. I was offered coffee and dessert as I was still swallowing my last mouthful of (thankfully now properly cooked) pasta.
I would have loved to write a wonderful report for this restaurant because we had such a wonderful time in La Maddelena. Unfortunately, La Perla Blu does not reflect the otherwise wonderful island. It's a real shame.
