Penzion Cosmopolitan II
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Stayed in rooms facing the main street during the warm summer and whole family was satisfied.
Rooms were clean and spacious. Equipment (e.g. TV) is a bit outdated, but there is not much to see in TV anyway :-)

Breakfast was OK too.

The only thing I was missing was air-conditioning, which would be really welcome during the summer. Fortunately thick walls provided some protection against the heat.

Wifi was available only in the dining & bar area.
Parking is available in hotel's parking lot across the street.

We stayed in this hotel several times and highly recommend it to couples as well as families with children. It´s a cozy place with good service, situated in the heart of historical town. Rooms are spacious, nicely furnished with beds with good quality matresses. We especially liked the Suite which has interesting old semi-arc high ceiling. This hotel offers only breakfast (rich choice) and according to my husband the wine cellar is well-stocked with exclusive quality products from Slovak wine growers. We were parking in a nearby parking lot (some 200 metres up the street - really not far). It would be perfect if the hotel could provide the guests with free parking there.

everything about this hotel was great. the nicest receptionist ever and I mean this when i say that good service makes my day. Clean and cosy, i would def. come back again. very good location

I stayed in this hotel with my mother and my boyfriend. I have contacted a few more hotels and I couldnt even get a nice polite reply. We came at 1am and we had a warm welcome. I can't wait to come back and stay again. We have used their sauna and jacuzzi.. all good

go there :)

We booked this hotel on the internet. When we arrived at the hotel, we found out that our reservation was lost somewhere in hotel’s mails but the lady at the reception was able to clarify our reservation. As no regular rooms for 2 people were available, we were offered suite for the price of a regular room.
We liked the room, staff was nice, everything was clean and breakfast was included in the price for overnight stay.
The pain point of the hotel is parking while the hotel has no reserved parking lots near by. One can park the car on the street (Banska Stiavnica has paid parking on the street even over the weekend, during our stay in October 2012 it was 0.50 EUR/hour) or in the other Cosmopolitan hotel which is about 500 meters away.
We enjoyed our stay in this hotel.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this place; they do have a website and there are some pictures on the internet but there's not much information around. In the event, I'm glad I did book at Cosmopolitan II as it was a good find.

The hotel is up in the older end of town (the bit which gets the place its UNESCO world heritage site status) and you do have to traipse uphill through some fairly uninspiring parts of town to get there if coming from the bus or train stations, but it's worth it in the end. It's on the main street so easy to find but it's a quiet town so noise isn't a problem. Parking might be a challenge in the area as there is certainly none right outside the hotel and I didn't notice much space nearby. We passed its sister hotel, Cosmopolitan I on the way and I think we picked the right option as Cosmopolitan II appeared nicer from the outside. The Old Castle is very close by as is the central square with the information centre, a museum and gallery. The open air mining museum (well worth a visit if you're the sort of person who likes poking around underground in a yellow cape, even if the tour isn't in English!!) is a 20-30minute walk from the hotel with the New Castle en route.

The staff didn't speak much English but were pleasant. The most irritating thing is that they lock the front door every time anyone goes in and out and you end up waiting for them to reappear to let you in/out again but not the end of the world and at least it's secure! The big thing they don't tell you is that there is a wine cellar just behind reception with a huge stock of bottles for all budgets and behind that is a display window onto an old mine shaft which is lit up and provides a really interesting feature; make sure you go and look! You can take a couple of wine glasses up to your room with a bottle too.

We had a large second floor room which was clean and nicely furnished. The windows looked straight out into a wall so worth trying to get a room at the front (or back?) if you want to see out! There was a TV with BBC in English and a fridge although it didn't work particularly well. The bathroom was fine; no bath but all clean. Breakfast was quite reasonable (continental style standard fare) although they did confuse us on our second day by changing the breakfast room and as we had to leave early, that meant we missed it completely.

In short, a pleasant hotel in a great location which provided great value and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Try for a room at the front for a view
