“Beautiful hotel”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

Had the best time at this quiet hotel in a part of Spain which remains 'Spanish' . Has everything you want gym, spa, wifi, pool, close to the beach and close to a few shops and restaurants. Staff are friendly and helpful and the half board food is very nice, the eating times are very convenient 7-10am fro breakfast and 7-10 for dinner. Our room had a view of the estuary which was good to watch the boats come in. Bring your trainers for the tennis court!

Room Tip: Email ahead to ask for a room above the 2nd floor to get the best views, they will help if they can.

Just got back from a 10 day stay at the Atlantico and now feeling very relaxed. Hotel was lovely and clean everywhere. Staff were very friendly, even the cleaners saying Ola in the corridors. Loved the aromatherapy aroma in the reception area. Very happy with my room view of the river, port & sea. Really wanted to move one room to the left to get a greater expanse of this view (2030). Saw the sun come up in the morning, watched the fishing fleet coming in & out, very relaxing. Beds and pillows very comfy, TV with channels to keep my husband happy! Room was perfectly adequate and airy, how would I improve it? Put in tea/coffee making facility rather than fetching a kettle after paying a deposit, then having to borrow cups from the dining room, hassle. Good size fridge in the room though for water etc. Combination safe would also make life easier. Loved that the hotel was mainly Spanish holiday makers and the food was mainly catering for them as I love fish and different types of fish were served every night. Lots of salad & fruit too, ate loads of cherries : ). Found a lovely fish restaurant in a car park next to the hotel, looked like nothing much but the Spanish were queuing up so we tried it, delicious food. Plenty of sun loungers at all times, pool kept very clean & lifeguards on duty. Beautiful 5 mile long beach in front of the hotel with a nice bar there. Lovely relaxing holiday with as much or as little as you want to do. Would recommend this, it is a solid 4 star resort.

Room Tip: room 2030 for a view of the sea, port and morning sun.

We have just returned from a 10 day stay at The Melia. The hotel itself was in a beautiful location and was extremely well looked after (always very clean and everything in good condition, finished to a high standard). The staff were extremely diligent, we were extremely well looked after in particular by Jesus on the bar, Bruna on the front desk and Diago in the restaurant. All members of staff went out their way and made a lot of effort to make you feel comfortable and happy but for us these three members really went that extra length and we are very grateful to them for making our holiday even more special. The hotel is in a quiet location but if you are looking for a nice, relaxing break, we found it to be perfect. We would definitely go there again. The only thing we thought could be improved on is the service at lunchtimes could have been slightly quicker and the cocktails weren't very authentic (and who doesn't love a good cocktail by the poolside).

The Melia overlooks golden (often deserted) beaches with clear blue sea. Small marina 10 minute walk away. Hotel is perfect for a holiday for those looking for peace and quiet but are prepared to go over into the Portugal border to see traditional Portuguese old towns and villages like Loule, and Vila Real San Antonio. Tarifa is also supposed to be pretty but Thomson did not offer a trip to that village.

Room Tip: Top floor overlooking sea was very quiet location

We have been to this hotel several times before when it was part of the RIU hotel group, but it has been taken over by the MELIA hotel group. We went from the last week in June and first week in July to miss the British school holidays, but caught the first week of the Spanish school holidays.
The hotel itself has not really changed since our last visit in 2012, however they have put new sunbeds around the pool area and also supply enormous soft towels.
The staff at check in were very efficient and it took no time at all to get to our room. We did ask for an upgrade to a sea view and paid the extra and it was well worth it.
The room was large with excellent aircon which was almost silent. The housekeeping was fantastic with very large bath towels and good quality toiletries as well as very comfortable beds.
The most important change was the dining experience. The buffet was always laid out in the middle of the dining room and you had to walk around it, but now the buffet is served from a glass room within the dining area. The food is fresher, better quality and a better selection. The show cooking is also of a better standard with more choice.
The other major change is that there used to be two sittings for dinner, and now you can go in anytime between 7-10pm which means no crowds queuing for food.
The evening entertainment was also an improvement on our last visit
I must mention Carmen who was head of housekeeping and arranged our sea view room.
Overall we had a great time at this MELIA hotel with wall to wall sunshine.

Room Tip: Have a room with a sea view

The hotel is really clean and all furnishings are to a very high standard.Reception staff really helpful, Room cleaners always ensuing they smile and say hello as they pass you. Our room was big, overlooked the river which gave us great views of all the fishing boats etc, Two main issues with the room, the AC was poor and the safe which is free to AI guests is placed on the floor in a cupboard, making it really difficult to get to. Dining was canteen style, its not a relaxing dinner experience although the food was good, plenty of choices.Lots of fresh seafood .The only other downside here is you have to get everything yourself, the only thing the waiters do is pour you drink ( and its difficult getting another one ) and clearing your plates away.Thank you to Maria, who was the pick of the waiting staff and really tried to look after us. Breakfast is more complex in as much as you have to get your own juice,tea/coffee, toast and breakfast which by the time you have stood in line and waited is not the most relaxed start to your day. Saw two shows and they were good, mimed but good costumes and dancing by the entertainment team. If you sign up to the hotels reward scheme you get 1 hour free wi-fi each day.Other wise its 4 Euros per day.only works well in the lobby. The Lobby bar was a nice cool place to sit but only opened at 5pm so you can not get a drink if your using your wi-fi earlier than this. Branded drinks if your AI, although not all guests are.You have to sign and confirm your room number every time. All in all really good value, would visit again.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the river inlet, plenty of activity on the water to watch from your balcony
See more room tips
Green Features: standard hotel practices, towels etc. The cleaner turns your air-con of each day.You need to go back and turn it back on if you want a cool room on your return
