“poor dining experience”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

This is our second stay ay this magnificent hotel, and yes I agree with the majority of the other comments regarding cleanliness, helpfulness and position. However, where this hotel falls down is in the restaurant. The staff try their best, but are stretched to a point where the service is chaotic and largely impersonal. This is due to the numbers of people dining at the same time. I understand that it is summer and that is when families take their holidays, nevertheless the dining room is too busy and far too noisy. I raise my hat to the staff for coping so well with what is a management problem and one which is not being tackled. At the moment the dining room can be compared to a motorway café on a bank holiday, and it certainly was not a relaxing experience for me. Otherwise its a great place to stay.

We have just returned from our 3rd visit to the Melia. Great. The whole hotel is well laid out, the rooms are good, the lounges nice and the food lovely.
One of the best things about this hotel is its situation right on the best beach in Spain, you really won't want to sit by the pool when you see it.
Unfortunately the same old thing rears its head (the putting of towels on sun beds), you don't get that when you go to the beach, you can hire a sunbed with an umbrella for 5 euros a day, and thats from 10am to 8 pm, well worth it.
The music in the public rooms is dire, I don't know who chooses it but they must be tone deaf.
We appreciate that there is a noise from children, but during the high season it is to be expected. We have also been in June and October and it is much quieter then. The hotel never seems full as it is very spacious.
The one thing that really gets my goat is the fact that so many men came down to the evening meal in t-shirt, shorts and flip flops, this really is not on. I just wish that the hotel would have a stricter dress code, we women can always manage to look smart, it doesn't take much doing. We always enjoy our stay and have already booked to go back in September

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the river side, its very interesting watching the fishing boats come and go.
See more room tips
Green Features: Try to use only the smaller towels, the hotel appreciates it.

We were there in August 2014, 2 kids + 2 adults. Room was great (Junior suite), beach is fantastic, pool also. Food was absolutely great, staff very friendly and helpful. Very nice cosy gym, internal pool was always free :) Location also great - reasonable distance to Sevilla (what a great city), Portugal, airport. Just perfect place for holiday :)

I spent 7 days here in August 2014 and when my holiday came to an end, I desperately wished I had booked 2 weeks!

The hotel itself feels more like 5*. It's spotlessly clean, well designed and just has that feeling of being quite a luxurious place to stay.

Our room was wonderful. We had a superior twin room and it was spacious with plenty of storage. Air con worked well and the room was cleaned daily. I liked the addition of a magazine being left every few days!

I wasn't expecting much from the food as it is a buffet however I was proved wrong. The food was delicious, fresh and such a variety! It was fantastic for me as I have coeliac disease and every dish was clearly labelled to say if it was gluten free or not.

The nearby area is quiet, couple of small shops, a few bars and small restaurants but it was perfect for me as I wanted a quiet holiday. If you wanted to visit somewhere busier, Ayamonte is the next big town and you can reach this by a frequent bus service which stops outside the hotel.

The staff at this hotel were polite, courteous and friendly. Although, as previous reviewers have said, this is a particularly Spanish resort, I saw this as a positive! I got a real taste of Spain and found the Spanish locals very welcoming.

I hope to come back soon!

Just returned from a week at the melia atlantico. . On arrival hotel very impressive with a stunning interior, including the rooms. All area's of the hotel were spotlessly clean including the outside areas,( pool etc) and remained so throughout our stay. Less positives were the restaurant and bar staff who spoke very little english and sometimes could be rude. The food was nice but with little variety, and snacks in the snack bar/restaurant small portions and expensive if only half board. Table tennis/tennis is available but racquets and bats are only available at certain hours of the day . The entertainment in the hotel finished at 11pm and so did the service in the bar. This is a very quiet hotel, but it also lacks any atmosphere especially in the evening. Warning strong scented candles burn in hotel at night . (this made me ill for a couple of days as l am sensitive to strong smells)

Just back from a week at this hotel and we were all inclusive. Could not fault the hotel or food. Plenty of room around the pool and despite what people said previously about kids misbehaving, we did not have that issue and it was a holiday in Spain the weekend we were there. Beach is close by and beautiful. We booked with Thomson's and went on an excursion off road 4x4, out driver was Paulo - excellent day out! Overall it was what we both needed to relax and recharge the batteries however the location is very quiet and not a lot to do.

We chose to stay in a hotel in the spanish Isla Canela despite living in Portugal and despite having spend few holidays in Algarve. The reason is the great offer of all-inclusive hotels, a drink/food package you rarely find in Portugal. We stayed here for 8 nights in July, 2 adults and a 4yrs old.
We booked via melia website a junior suite, as the standard or superior rooms looked rather small on pictures. We got a nice room with sea view on the 4th floor. It was spacious enough, clean, with a good size bathroom, good size TV and very comfortable beds.
Hotel:
The exterior has a nice and interesting moorish touch, just as the majority if Isla Canela buildings. As to the interior - it wasn´t my cup of tea. Especially the huge "conservatory" behind the reception looked like some old spa house and it tend to be quite hot due to the glass windows all over the place. However, it was huge with lots of tables and sofas, so there were basically no people, despite a fully booked hotel. The management tried to put a bit of atmosphere to the big lobby with some evening incense sticks - that was a nice touch.
Restaurant&food&drinks:
Huge restaurant, but not as unwelcome as it seemed on the photos. It is actually nice. The chairs are latherette and at the very end of the restaurant you can also find a nice "corner", with comfortable chairs and no air-condition - something we appreciated very much, as the rest of the restaurant was too cold. We never had troubles to find a table.
The food was simply amazing. We were a bit worried as we read bad TA reviews regarding food, but they were from last year and the management apparently learn from them. Every night was a different theme (spanish, japanese, german...) and we always ate very well. Also the soups and desserts were very nice. The breakfast was standard, with good juices, good selection of fruit, sparkling wine. Could have been better, but we never craved anything.
As to the drinks - they were a nice surprise. Of course that the cocktails (mojito and 2 more) were absolutely undrinkable as in majority of AI hotels, but the spirits selection was quite impressive: Beefeater gin, Barcelo rum, Absolute vodka, Baileys, Martini, port wine, local manzanilla wine ecc.
Pool&beach&entertainment:
Pretty large pool, from the bridge towards the "cave" very shallow. The "cave" part was also very windy, but the weather was nice and hot, so it was pleasant enough. There is also a kids pool - could be bigger and with some small slide as in the afternoon got very overcrowded and suspiciously warm. ;-)
The beach is huge and very flat - ideal for beach sport. Sun beds and umbrellas are charged and too far away from the sea. The water was quite dirty, with a lot of smelly algae, few jellyfish and used to make a nasty yellow foam - that was our biggest disappointment. In Portugal the sea is crystal clear, but ice cold. Here was a bit warmer, but too dirty. However, on the very last day we walked towards the big rocks on the left side of the hotel and thought all the mess will be accumulated there and it was the opposite - we found the cleanest water there.
Entertainment was ok, but lacked information. There was no board with written program of the day and no clock anywhere around the place, so it was hard to follow it. There was also entertainement for kids, but from 5 years up. (btw- also a foam party for kids-charged 15€!) Somebody mentioned also 15€ per night for parking. That is also indecent, but we easily parked in nearby streets for free, so no stress about it.
Night entertainment was great for kids, well prepared and fun. Salsa night was great also for adults.
The surroundings&the town:
There is a small, but very well kept hotel garden on the left side of the hotel, with tennis and netball court. Nice long walk along the beach, ideal for running, walking or cycling, some bars and kid parks with inflatable castles in the nearby streets. All in all very pleasant and calm.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to families with young children.
