“Fantastic restaurant - on its way to a Michelin Star”
Reviewed 29 September 2008

Although I have yet to stay in this hotel/restaurant, I had the great pleasure of dining there in September AND I intend to go back soon. The quality of the food and wine was great. I chose the 4 course chef's menu. The alaskan crab was beautifully presented and the venison was the best I have ever tasted. It was a superb culinary experience and one that I cannot wait to repeat. The staff were exteremely attentive and the whole experience was memorable. Contrary to the other reviewer, the amuses were not only delicious but were well explained. The petits fours were also excellent although maybe a touch too much after a a big meal. All in all, definitely one of the best restaurants in The Netherlands and a chef to watch for the future.

The location is great. The room I was in looked great. There was a complimentary bottle of water and wine. The food was nice enough, but the personnel was unattentive. Orders were forgotten, the amuse not explained. I didn't feel welcome and had the impression the personnel couldn't be bothered.
The room was extremely hot and there were musquito's.
Not Michelin worthy.

We stayed a few days in this hotel. They have an arrangement which is not cheap but acceptable. The environment is great to bike and boat and to experience the beautiful villages, lakes and rivers.
The food is excellent. The hotel rooms can be better for a hotel of this category. A dog is walking around in lobby and loung which I don't like at all. The outside of the building incl. windows, is not clean but dirty. The service out side the resaurant could be better. The rent of a bike or boat in the hotel is terrible expensive Euro. 25 per day and Euro 85 per hour respectively. In the village Euro 7 and 150 per day. Maps are limited available because we had to give back a copy at the end of the day. For us: the food was o.k. but the hotel and other services can be improved. For that reason we are hestitating to recommend this hotel.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Restaurant De Nederlanden in April 2007 and in 30+ years of travel this most certainly has to be one of our 10 best experiences.

Having recently purchased a Volvo XC90 (fairly big car) using the European delivery programme we started off at the manufacturing facility in Göteborg, Sweden ... spent some time in Denmark ... and finished with 6 days in The Netherlands. Since we had the new car we didn't want the headache of driving and parking in Amsterdam - or the hustle of staying in any busy city.

Our plans whilst in The Netherlands included visiting Utrecht, Amsterdam, the Keukenhof gardens and the Dutch seacoast. Based on these and other attractions we wanted a location that would be fairly simple for either driving or taking public transportation. Some friends suggested the lakes in the Loosdrecht area west of Hilversum as a good place to stay. We considered the Golden Tulip but was subsequently turned off by some of the travel reviews.

The Nederlanden was recommended by a fellow TripAdvisor poster and we are very glad we decided to stay here! After reviewing the hotel's web site we made an enquiry via email and received a prompt response with an attractive rate. We subsequently faxed the hotel our credit information to guarantee the reservation. Although I did notice that the hotel was available on some on-line reservation systems I felt we got the best deal by contacting the hotel directly.

The hotel is relatively small having only 9 rooms. Don't let the number of rooms fool you: the accommodations were superb with a spacious room and every imaginable amenity. The condition of the property is immaculate and although some of the historic photos I noticed seem to indicate this has been an inn for well over 100 years you'd never know it. The hotel and restaurant also has its own car park adjacent to the building; parking is free.

The location just can't be beat! If you want a real taste of The Netherlands this is a perfect place to experience it. The hotel is located on the banks of the river Vecht in the tiny village of Vreeland which is split in two by the river. Across from the hotel is a small drawbridge which is still frequently used - we watched all kinds of boats navigate up and down the river during our stay. The bridge operator uses a long pole with a string and Dutch clog (wooden shoe) attached to it; he extends it out to passing boats for them to pay their tolls!

Another De Nederlanden benefit is the level of service you receive from their staff. Whereas at some other larger hotels once and a while you encounter a staff member who goes above and beyond - at the Nederlanden every employee does that by matter of fact. We never had to mention our room number; everyone knew us by name. They graciously assisted us with sending some faxes and letters (at no additional expense I may add). One evening we came back late only to find no available spaces in their car park. No problem - one of the staff moved the hotel's car onto the street and gave us their space. On another occasion we missed the laundry pickup and they had no problems making special arrangements for our laundry service.

De Nederlanden has an award winning restaurant on the property as well, having earned a Michelin star. Here the quality of the food and presentation are at its utmost finest. Based on the number of people dining every evening they clearly have a good local following. For hotel guests, breakfast is served in the same formal dining area each morning. The quality of the breakfast offerings is likewise on par with the restaurant: fresh squeezed orange juice, assortment of fruit, breads, cheeses and meats as well as eggs, bacon and other items cooked to order upon your request. In eating a large breakfast we found that we only needed a small afternoon snack to carry us through the day.

We found the hotel's location to be very convenient as well. Vreeland is only about 3km east of the A2 motorway (Amsterdam - Utrecht) on the N201 provincial highway. A BP gas / petrol station, store and car wash is located just on the edge of the village on the N201. You will encounter many beautiful sites in the drive up and down the small roads along the Vecht. There are a few small, local shops in Vreeland - my favourite was the bakery where I could get warm gevulde koek (a cookie filled with almond butter paste) right out of the oven!

For our travel to Amsterdam we drove south on the A2 motorway one exit to Breukelen. There is a train station in Breukelen adjacent to the Van de Valk Hotel Breukelen (looks like Chinese building). We parked in the hotel's secure lot for a maximum of €18 per day. A return ticket to Amsterdam was €5 per person. NOTE: you need to buy your train tickets in advance - not on the train. The NS Breukelen station does not have an agent - so be sure to have euro coins handy as the automatic ticket machines typically do not accept foreign credit cards. It is also possible to take the train to Utrecht this way as well - but we opted to park closer to Utrecht and take the bus in instead when we visited.

From De Nederlanden we were able to reach the Keukenhof Gardens in under an hour by going west on the N201. Although the N201 is a busy road you get to see a lot more than you would whilst up on the motorways. Schiphol Airport is approximately 45 minutes away and the beaches a little more than an hour (depending on traffic).

The hotel does have Internet service albeit it is not free. Even still it is reasonably priced: a weekly KPN hot spot subscription costs €25. (We paid that rate per day at some hotels in Italy!) The staff will also provide hardcopies of web sites, etc. from their computers upon request.

De Nederlanden is a member of the Relais & Chateaux association. Based on our past experiences with Relais & Chateaux listed accommodations and restaurants only those properties that meet high levels of quality standards are accepted into the association. De Nederlanden is exemplary of these standards. We would highly recommend this property and would most certainly stay with them again.
