Owner description: Located in the heart of the countryside, the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum is Suffolk's only standard gauge steam railway. Known locally as the 'Middy', this quaint little line running from Haughley to Laxfield opened in 1904, firstly for freight and later for passengers. The line closed in 1952 and the track was lifted; however in the early 1990's a group of enthusiasts decided to revive this forgotten piece of Suffolk history, firstly as a museum and later by adding a demonstration line for visitors to experience rural travel on vintage trains. The work of the museum was recognised when the Middy was declared the winner of the Suffolk Museum of the Year Award for 2014. Today the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum is a registered charity and while the museum may be small, visitors can look forward to a big welcome from our voluntary staff. Upon purchasing your ticket you are able to ride the trains as many times as you wish, and being a season ticket this also allows you to return free of charge throughout the year (except special events days). We have a well-stocked shop, real ale bar, and tearoom serving beverages, home-made cakes and hot snacks. We look forward to welcoming you to the Middy very soon, for more details about our events and opening times.

Living only 10 miles from the Mid Suffolk Light Railway Museum, I never visited it until recently and it really impressed me.

You are welcomed by dedicated volunteers all in authentic railway uniforms and all have friendly personalities and always smiling. These guys and girls really do love their work!

The little steam train and its station is a direct recreation of the former Mid Suffolk Light Railway using original buildings from the railway, typical coaches of the line and the little tank engine takes you all 500 yards through delightful countryside offering timeless views of Mid Suffolk and its railway.

The £5 admission provides you with unlimited rides in first and third classes of the train and the added bonus of a journey with the guard as you see ahead down the line. With Gift Aid, that £5 is valid for 12 months admission to the railway at no extra cost - How do they do it?

The Museum displays are very clear, well displayed and complely vistor friendly for all ages and sizes. The on-site catering is well-run offering a wide variety of reasonably priced hot and cold food - again, how do they do it?

The shop is well stocked with gifts and souvenirs to cover almost all tastes.

Overall, The Mid Suffolk Light Railway is an incredible place to visit and other heritage railways could do well learning from them.
