“Out of the ordinary!!!!”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

A great place to truly experience the rainforest. Some windows have no glass, just shutters that open/close. There is a welcoming breeze. The sounds of the rainforest serenade you each evening. Raphael is a pleasure to work with and very hospitable! Have Raphael cook dinner, you won't be disappointed. Since El Hotelito is an old flower farm there are multiple trails to walk on that are filled with beautiful tropical flowers (many more than you will see in El Yunque Natl Rainforest). This place is a photographers dream. The drive to El Hotelito is an adventure in itself. Easy to follow directions. We have told many friends about our stay and how we wished we had stayed more nights!

Room Tip: There are only 7 rooms, we had room 7, small private deck. Liked our room.

The drive to El Hotelito on the dirt road gave us worry. We weren't sure if our small rental car was going to make it and if this was going to be the sequel to the movie Tourista. Once we arrived all of our concern and worry faded away. El Hotelito was so simple, but amazing and beautiful all at the same time. We were welcomed by Rapha and his dogs. We were escorted to our room and told about dinner plans and how to go about ordering. Rapha, Raphael, and El Hotelito and the surrounding rainforest made our trip to Puerto Rico! The views, the communal dinners, the open construction downstairs were such a nice change from regular hotel experiences. If you like getting off the beaten path, I highly recommend El Hotelito. It's an experience you aren't likely to forget :)

My wife and I booked 5 nights at the Hotelito, and were surprised when it quickly became the highlight of our trip. We can not thank them enough for making this a special trip.

The hotel itself is very simple and minimalist, ran on solar energy and rain water. The rooms are spacious, and the beds are comfortable. No electricity besides the lighting in the room, but charging stations and Wifi in the comfortable and relaxing open air parlor area.

What it lacks in creature comforts, is made up by the experience it provides and the beauty that surrounds it. Without the distractions of the television and noise of the city, my wife and I were able to relax and reconnect. The whole experience begs you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

However, what made the trip so amazing was the hosts. The hotel is ran by the most welcoming and inviting father and son. The whole time we felt less like guests and more like family. Raphael really did make us feel like family, through great dinner time conversation, amazing home cooked meals, and welcoming attitude. We dined at the Hotelito 3 of the 5 nights, and were not dissappointed (the chicken and rice was worth the price of airfare alone!). We were sad to leave.

Overall, the Hotelito can offer an experience not matched by chain hotels and one that will create lasting memories.

Stay here if you're looking for an experience to remember, full of adventure, great food, great people, and the beauty of the rain forest.

Avoid if you're looking for the Holiday Inn.

This place is amazing. The drive up to the hotel is hairy, don't worry, you'll make it up the mountain and it's worth it. The place is really nice, but in a minimalist kind of way. The views, atmosphere, and all around experience is once in a life time. And the cost is a real bargain.

The place is owned by this guy Raphael and his son, also by the same name. They are all really nice folks. The whole operation is self sustaining with rain water reserves and stuff like that. They have a few dogs that are quite and nice. Max is the best out of them all.

We slept with the windows wide open on the most comfortable mattress ever. No joke, Coquis and Geckos were in the room with us. Best sleep I've ever had.

All is all, awesome place. I put it at the top of any B&B I've ever stayed at.

Room Tip: Pick the ones facing the ocean. They gave us options since the occupancy was really low.

It's an experience but not what we expected. If you want to know what it's like to sleep in a rainforest without screens on the windows with insects and little critters (in your room) then you will love it. The air is cool and the breeze is wonderful so the fact there is no air conditioning is not a problem. I was bothered that no hair dryers or curling irons were allowed. As for room service, there is none. We did not get clean towels without asking. The sheets were not changed and I believe this is because they are energy conscious due to the fact it is solar powered. We spent 4 nights and that is the longest I've ever been without television. As for the drive up and down, DO NOT RENT A CAR!! Rent a SUV or jeep. A good portion of the road is not paved and somewhat dangerous. Breakfast consists of cereal, bananas, oranges, sweet cake and coffee. It was very tranquil and relaxing so it was not completely bad. If you are an outdoor enthusiast and know what your in for you will enjoy this place. If you are a person that enjoys 3, 4 or 5 star hotels you might reconsider.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a better view

If you need all the comforts of home, then this place is not for you. If driving off road scares you, then stay away. If you can't live without a bunch of electronics or air conditioning, then I suggest that you find a different place to stay.

If you like adventures, sleeping among nature with little in the way of comforts, then this is the place for you. Fortunately for me and my wife, we love a good adventure. This place was excellent.

El Hotelito sits at the top of a mountain, in the middle of the rain forest. The road up the mountain is not paved with dotted lines and plenty of room for two cars. It is narrow and very bumpy. I suggest a 4x4 vehicle when you visit. I made the hike up the hill in the dark in a Hyundai Accent with 4 people and our luggage. It was a little difficult to find in the dark. The car scrapped it's bottom all along the way up and down. This was a blast! At times, I was not sure if the car would make it up the hills.

The place is very nice. It has an open concept, with plenty of sitting space on the first floor to enjoy with sounds and views of the rainforest. Raphael and his wife were very pleasant. Dinner and breakfast was delicious. They had several dogs that walked the property. All of them were gentle.

There is little in the way of electricity, so forget the blow dryers and electric shavers. You are in the middle of the rainforest, not a Hilton. It was awesome falling asleep to the coqui frogs. We will definitely stay here again in the future.

There is also a small pool out back. It was not in operation when we stayed.

To those that prefer the big hotel accommodations, be warned! To those that prefer a simpler life, welcome!

Room Tip: I stayed in room #1 on the second floor. It was a good size room. Not much in the way of furniture...

Positives: For a unique experience we booked this hotel for two nights. It is certainly off the beaten path - you will wind up several steep hills (don't worry - AWD isn't a must although I was concerned for a bit it might be!) and arrive at a bed and breakfast style hotel in the middle of the rainforest. Raphael met us with his three cute dogs and gave us a tour of the place. Although there are no outlets in the room, there is an outlet strip in the lobby where you can charge electronics. The views are amazing and breathtaking. The rooms are very cute with cement floors and open windows. The temp was just fine in the room with the windows open, however, it did rain into the room so keep items off the floor if possible...I had to throw away a book. You can hear the coqui frogs in the background and I was fortunate to see a couple. There are paths that you can hike along that belong to the hotel. It is a 25 minute drive from the El Yunque entrance and Luquillo kiosks and about 45 minutes from the airport or port.

Negatives: Although children are welcome at this location, I would NOT recommend bringing children here. First of all, there are many little nick-nacks in the lobby that the kids could get at and upset the owner. Next, the swimming pool is empty due to renovations they have to do to be in compliance with handicap standards...this means in the yard there is a 6-7 foot drop into a cement pit, so children cannot simply run around in the grass. Finally, the open air concept that we found neat is not condusive to a toddler crying before bed or just waking up....the entire hotel can hear it. While the blunt humor of Raphael is mostly funny, he can make you feel a little bad about your child if they are misbehaving. The only other recommendation I would make is to skip the dinner. It is made by the owner and is a neat atmosphere. However, it is rather pricey. If you don't mind a rambunctous atmosphere I highly recommend a dinner the kiosks in Luquillo. Very fun experience and reasonably priced delicious food. If you want a quiet homemade meal, you might not mind paying the price El Hotelito charges for their dinner.

Overall, I think it is an amazing hotel experience for the adventerous. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique experience...but leave the kids at home!
