We stayed for one week at the Vila do Farol at the end of the summer season 2012.
The pros: very clean, lovely garden/pool area, very easy access to beach (it is a public beach, not a private beach FYI), excellent breakfast (with delicious fresh fruit and strong coffee)
The cons: very expensive. One should understand for the price one is getting a very simple room with a small kitchenette. The AC worked fine, and the windows and doors were good quality so outside noises were hardly noticed. The bathroom has a good sized shower but no tub (if you are traveling with a very small child). The towels and bed linens were average to slightly worn.
We stayed with a 2 year old. It was an extremely easy place to take her. The hotel provides fresh beach towels, so there is no need to pack your own. The children´s food on the take-out menu was just so-so, and the room only had a microwave and a mini fridge, so food (cooking and storing in the mini fridge) became a bit problematic as the week went one. The hotel felt very safe, but a small child will need supervision by the pool and walking to the breakfast area as there is a parking lot. The best reason to go is the beach. The beach itself gets a bit crowded, but the water is so lovely, clean and calm, and it is a perfect beach for a little one to play and swim. There are a zillion shops in town that sell floats, beach toys and everything else for the beach under the sun. Bombinhas is definitely one of the nicest beaches in the area. The hotel has a little "section" on the beach with lounge chairs and umbrellas. One can get bar service from the hotel bar on the beach, too (so we enjoyed shrimp and caipirinhas on the beach). There were plenty of activities for the kids (the kids staff all spoke Portuguese and a little Spanish), but our daughter was a bit young so we didn´t do them this time.
The reception staff was very nice and many of the breakfast staff were very friendly, too. My husband and I did feel an overall "coldness" from the hotel- many communications on rules (no ordering pizza from outside, no putting clothes out to dry on the balconies, etc). I felt like I was staying at a fussy aunt´s home. Also, we wanted room service our first night there as we checked in late. Room service was up until 11:00 PM, but when we called at 10:50 we were told it was already closed.
I think it is the best place to stay in Bombinhas with children, and perhaps the best place in Bombinhas overall. Some of the other hotels didn´t look so nice and many of the pousadas require a walk to the beach and crossing the main street of town, which was congested with cars and motorbikes. The Vila do Farol was definitely the prettiest hotel, too, with lovely greenery and colorful buildings. We were a bit disappointed with the restaurant options in Bombinhas center, too (we like really good quality dining when we travel), so we were glad the hotel had a good restaurant. The restaurant food was very good, but also a bit pricey. We had some of our favorite meals delivered to our patio (only ground floor rooms have a patio, no balconies on level 2). The shrimp in the pineapple was delish!
Have fun!
