““A Book End Stay at Sofitel Fiji””
Reviewed 8 March 2013

We stayed at the wonderful Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa for one night before going out to one of the outer islands in the Mamanuca Group of Islands.
Sofitel Fiji has been our preferred ‘start and end’ hotel when visiting Fiji over the last 6 years, and we really feel it is ‘our second home’ because of the familiarity with the rooms, facilities, gardens, beach and more particularly the fantastic staff, most of whom have been working at the Sofitel Fiji since it opened about 7 years ago.
We were travelling with our son, daughter-in-law, and our daughter-in-law’s parents from Germany who had never been to Fiji before; and hoped that the normal ‘hot & humid’ weather conditions at this time of year and the disastrous affects of the recent Cyclone Evan wouldn’t unduly detract from our enjoyment during our stay.
Although it was certainly hot during the day, being around 33 degrees – 36 degrees C, it was very conducive to spending a considerable amount of our time enjoying ourselves walking around the delightful gardens and admiring the work of the staff who had already cleared and cleaned up the Cyclone storm damage and there were plenty of signs of re-growth appearing in the trees and shrubs everywhere. We have appreciated the well kept and maturing gardens over the years, which with the phenomenal vegetation growth that happens in Fiji, have largely shrouded the hotel from other neighbouring developments on Denarau Island, including being seen from out on Nadi Bay.
The fact that the recent Cylcone Evan had largely destroyed all the foliage on the larger trees along the beach front and in front of the hotel rooms meant that the original splendid views out over the sea, etc, especially from the balconies in front of the rooms, were once more prevalent. The gardens now look so new, neat and tidy, as they were when originally planted some 7 years ago, and they are once again not blocking out some very scenic views from the many vantage viewing points.
The smiles and Bula greetings from all the staff and management, regardless as to whether they were new recruits or seasoned campaigners, were in abundance throughout our stay, and our family from Germany was really impressed with the Fijian friendliness, enthusiasm and professionalism; as we naturally were as well. We regard many of the staff as our very special friends and always look forward to seeing them on our return visits.
Our Happy Hour drinks at the Breeze Bar, which overlooks the magnificent swimming pool and out towards the Salt Restaurant alongside the beach and Nadi Bay, was a very happy place to catch up with the family, F&B staff and plan the next day’s activities. The evening meal at Salt Restaurant and the expansive Buffet Breakfast in the Lagoon Restaurant the next morning lived up to the enviable reputation that Sofitel Fiji has maintained with its Restaurants and Bars over the years. The creative, talented and friendly Chefs, Kitchen Teams and the F&B Teams seem to always go out of their way to ensure we thoroughly enjoy our meals.
Although there had been considerable damage to parts of the Sofitel Resort, the staff had obviously done an admirable job in repairing most of the structural damage and work gangs were already working on fixing the thatched roofs of some of the Activities Bures down near the beach area. We could clearly see the sense of pride in all the staff who as a well led Team had worked so hard to look after themselves, their own respective families, the guests who were staying at the Resort at the time of Cyclone Evan, and also the property of the Sofitel Fiji.
What a credit to the staff and management of the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, who all lived and worked through the devastating Category 5 Cyclone Evan and now showing an unbelievable amount of resilience can still consistently provide a truly “5 Star” level of enthusiastic and professional customer service and experience. All the lovely staff working throughout the Resort seem to create a natural and inviting environment where you are made to feel special when you are staying at Sofitel Fiji, whereas really they are the ones who are the special people.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Sofitel Fiji and we were really impressed with the standard and quality of the rooms assigned to us, which were kept very clean & tidy during our stay by the delightful and hard working Housekeeping Team.
We were professionally greeted and ‘booked in’ on our arrival, and then ‘booked out’ and fare-welled on our departure, by the smart, cheeky, efficient and caring Guest Relations Team. Our South Sea Cruises courtesy bus picked us up from the Sofitel Fiji right on schedule, forget about Fiji Time, to take us down to Port Denarau, a 4 minute bus ride, ready for our scenic transfer out to an outer island on South Sea Cruises’ yellow Yasawa Flyer.

Time passes so quickly when you are staying at a fantastic place such as Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island. We had returned from a most enjoyable stay at Mana Island out in the Mamanuca Group of Islands and after checking in to the Sofitel Fiji, decided to take a 2 ½ hour ride to Lautoka Municipal Markets and to visit some ‘old’ friends at a hotel near Vuda Point. The enthusiastic Concierge Team quickly organized a local competent driver with his well presented air-conditioned minivan to take our family group of 7 out for the afternoon and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience knowing that we were in capable hands and travelling in a safe vehicle; the Sofitel Team does set high standards.
After enjoying our Happy Hour drinks at the Breeze Bar, with the fantastic open views out over the magnificent pool and the close by beach and sea of Nadi Bay, we were shown to a table in the Lagoon Restaurant for a fabulous Seafood Night Buffet. The range, display, colour and quality of the food prepared by the cheerful Chefs was extraordinary, and the exemplary service from Ashika, the F&B Team Leader and all her colleagues was very special. We were treated to a right royal feast and felt rather spoilt with the attention given to us by the F&B Team and the Chefs. Although the Buffet dinner price is rather expensive, this does reflect the quality on offer, but can be mitigated by using the Advantage Plus Card which provides 50% discount off most meals at Accor branded Hotels; and is well worth getting the membership.
We had been assigned a room with a king-size bed and a rollaway bed for our special needs daughter, instead of our normal requirement for a room with two queen-size beds; however we had been previously contacted by Raksha, the courteous and efficient Guest Relations Manager, to seek our acceptance to this needed change because maintenance work was being carried out in the block of rooms that we usually prefer. Unfortunately the mattress on the rollaway bed was found to be rather uncomfortable, and although these types of ‘wire sprung’ mattresses are apparently replaced each year, the Rooms Director decided to provide us with a brand new one after two replacement mattresses were also found to be too uncomfortable. Well done to the House Keeping Staff, Duty Manager and Director of Rooms for persevering with solutions until we were completely satisfied; most other Hotels would have said ‘put up & shut up’.
The following day, 4 of our family group left to return to New Zealand, and once again the Concierge Team organized a smartly turned out ‘red’ van to take them off to the Nadi Airport, on time and with no undue stress, and with all their baggage which had been efficiently picked up from their rooms well in advance.

Meanwhile the Gardening Team was working hard to prepare a new outside Function area to farewell the Hotel’s General Manager the following day. They had cleared the scrub and rubbish from a large area of land, mostly unused and which had been hidden from view behind fences for the last 6-7 years. With real pride, enthusiasm, an eye for detail and some artistic flair, they were finishing off a special ‘Park like’ space with a professional entrance path and appropriate plantings of new shrubs, flowers and trees.
The all-round care and presentation of the gardens at Sofitel Fiji is a real credit to the Gardening Team and does help to create a more natural and soothing environment for the guests staying at this particular Hotel. Although the Sofitel Fiji is a very large Resort, it is carefully set out in sections with the main activity areas including the large swimming pool, bars & restaurants, the shops, conference rooms and the Reception area all separated from each block of rooms to ensure relative quietness and privacy. The trees and gardens also provide a picturesque shroud to the accommodation sections which are only 3 levels high and are set below the tallest of the coco nut palm trees which gives a lovely ‘South Pacific Islands’ feel.
After a swim in the very warm and relaxing water of the well designed swimming pool and an invitation to join in with a hilarious game of pool volley ball it was off to watch the final touches to the outside Function Area for the GM’s farewell party. Staff, who were not on essential duty, were all making their way to the important social gathering and just as the Farewell Function commenced, the heavens opened with thunder and heavy rain. Nonplussed the staff gathered up all the mats, food and equipment and quickly set things up in an alternative venue inside the main complex. It was amazing to see such team work from so many people who achieved their task within minutes of the rain starting and illustrated again how professional they all are at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa.
I was invited in to see the farewell ceremony and to take plenty of photos which will be shared with the staff and management at the Sofitel Fiji. What a generous invitation it was and a ‘bitter/sweet’ but joyful occasion to witness and capture on camera. The General Manager was leaving after 3 years working at the Sofitel Fiji and had certainly left his mark by successfully leading the organization through 3 major catastrophes during 2012, with 2 devastating floods in the early part of the year, and again in the week leading up to Christmas with the destructive Category 5 Cyclone Evan causing so much damage to people’s lives and property throughout the Western area of the Fiji Islands, including to all the hotels on Denarau Island, of which the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa is but 1 of 8.
What the GM, his management team and his staff were able to achieve during and after these adversities gained the Sofitel Fiji an enviable reputation, and the staff were gathered to send their departing GM off in style and with a heartfelt rendition of Fiji’s famous song of farewell, namely “Isa Lei”. What a privilege to be present with the Sofitel staff on this occasion, and to feel truly welcome, not just as a guest but as part of the Sofitel Family.
Sofitel Fiji is a very special Hotel which is made so by the large team of people who work there, who have great attitude, are trained up on first class hospitality skills and have gained experience by continuing to work there year after year. New faces seem to be carefully selected and blended in with the old hands so that guests are individually looked after which all helps to complement a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
Hot Tip: The beach in front of Sofitel Fiji is safe for swimming, especially inside the buoyed off area, which is not the same at the other hotels on Denarau Island. Until Cyclone Evan stripped most trees of their foliage, the shade under the trees on the beach out in front of the Sofitel was a fantastic place to sit in a hammock, or a beach chair, and read a book, admire the sea view & activity out on the water or just go to sleep. The space & shade will no doubt return very quickly.

We have spent several days at the Sofitel while in Fiji on Business. Everything is adequate. The rooms are clean and the grounds well kept. The pool is large and central. There are several shops, bars and three restuarants all offering a slightly different eating option. There is also a small cafe which provides a good lunch or snack.

Breakfast is bufet and good. Probably not as expansive as the Raddison but still quite acceptable in variety.

One thing worth mentioning is the young musician that plays guitar and sings during breakfast. He has a superb voice, probably one of the best we have heard in Fiji.

All in all this area isnt where we would chose if on holiday or wanting to enjoy the true Fiji. Denarau is full of hotels that you could visit anywhere in the world.

I would recommend the Sofitel to anyone making a visit. It represents good value for money in comparison to some and provides a pleasant and comfortable stay.

Bonjour Bula Cheezel,

Vinaka for reviewing us!

It was nice reading your feedback and to note that you had an opportunity to experience most of the facilities at the resort. It is also very pleasing to find the appreciation of our talented musician during breakfast. He is indeed quiet popular and gets highly praised by many of our guests.

Your feedback on the resort is valuable to us and we would love the opportunity to welcome you back and it would be a great pleasure to have you experience a holiday with us.

Please feel free to contact me directly on h5706-gr01@sofitelfiji.com.fj for your future accommodation needs.

My husband and I are hoping to return as soon as possible. We could not fault the dining experiences, the lovely friendly and very attentive staff. The spacious room overlooking the ocean was comfortable and very clean. We had 13 beautiful days of warm sunshine and gentle evening breezes to take in the most amazing sunsets. The hotel provides plenty of entertainment be it in the day or evening, water aerobics was fun, torch lighting, band music in breakfast room and bar area, movie nights for the kids with free popcorn...all good. A heavenly experience in a 5 star resort!

Wedding at Sofitel. Reception, venue, menu all good however hotel let itself down in other areas, misleading booking room description, inattentive restaurant and bar staff, tired looking rooms, but only in one wing of the hotel, eg., shabby and frayed carpets, room temperature control is set and is intermittent - tends to go on and off all the time which I presuming might be cost control. Sofitel Fiji is a lovely setting though, very open design although foyer can be dark when it rains as they have to bring down the shade cloths. Food was quite good overall.

I stayed for 4 nights in February 2013. The room was fantastic -- large and clean with amazing views of the pool and beach. The food at all of the restaurants was delicious and we never had trouble getting a seating for dinner (though I suspect we were not here in peak tourist season). The pool was beautiful and had plenty of chairs and umbrellas. I wish there had been more cushioned chairs available, but that was my only complaint. Staff was friendly and helpful. The spa was also fantastic -- I highly recommend the hot stone massage! The band that played cover music at night was highly entertaining. Can't wait to go back!

I stayed for 6 nights. The staff was great. The pool and common areas were very nice. The room was not what I expected from a 5 star hotel. The rug was fraying in a number of spots and The remote connection for the TV kept falling off. (I would not normally watch TV but it poured one day and wasn't much else to do.). Also the staff from Rosie's, the on-site tour company, was not very helpful in making recommendations.
