“Fantastic Family Holiday!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2008

We just got back from Shang-ri-la after staying 10 nights with our 3 children (10, 8, & 3). What a wonderful family holiday. The fijian people were so friendly and really made it an enjoyable stay. We booked an Ocean Family Room which was on the ground floor but when we arrived we were told that they were all booked out and we had been upgraded and now had 2 interconnecting rooms. The rooms were lovely and clean and the airconditiong was fantastic. The maids cleaned our room everyday and put little flowers on the pillows and in our kids teddy's ears we thought it was lovely. The food was pretty pricey for what it was. We payed for 6 night of dinners for my husband and I so we didnt have to wear the cost when we were over there. The buffet was the same most nights but definately ok foods ie roasts, chinese, curries etc. Breakfast was good, we got there a bit late some mornings (9am) and had to wait for a table for a while. The kids club was fantastic - our kids couldn't wait to go there everyday and the kids discos at night meant that my husband and I could go out and have a few drinks and pick the kids up at 9.30pm. We hired a babysitter one night it cost $24 fijian dollars for 3 hours then $7 every hour after that so well worth it. We went on the Magical Tour - this was worth every cent. It was our best day there, so a must do!! Make sure when you get off the plane you buy some alcohol for your room and some snacks as food and alcohol is pretty expensive at the resort ($11 a spirit & $8 a beer). For massages and girls hair braiding go outside the resort and across to Gecko's resort. You will see a hut - go here!! You call her Aunty and she is much cheaper than the resort and extremely friendly!!! This was a fantastic holiday that our whole family enjoyed we can't wait to go back.

We recently returned from our wonderful 1 week holiday in Fiji. My husband and I travelled with our 3 children (8,5,3). After reading many mixed reviews on trip advisor we went without any expectations and were ready to accept the resort for what it had to offer. Offer it did. We had paid for an Ocean Family Room and on arrival had been upgraded to a Lagoon Suite with 2 rooms, 2 tv's (including plasma), big balcony and 2 bottles of water everynight. It was fantastic, the views across the pool and the lagoon were lovely. The lagoon rooms are where all the action is - pool, lagoon, watersports, restaurants, kids club etc. The ocean rooms we were told are also nice but it is a longer walk to get to the facilities. Food was fantastic - buffet meals for lunch and dinner and a choice of atleast 2 different types of food daily plus fruit for the kids. Kids club was good, we didn't send the kids there much because it was their holiday as well as ours and we wanted them to experience all that we were. Kayaking was great, swimming in pool and lagoon. Beach massage is a must and very relaxing. The kids and I also had our hair braided with beads (very stylish). Kids disco everynight was great. A little tip - buy your water from the shops and it will be a lot cheaper than at the restaurant. Went on the village tour to Sigatoka - very interesting and the kids loved playing with the local kids. Saw the firedancing and that again was a wonderful experience.

Overall the resort was fantastic, staff very friendly and obliging and the food was yum. We will be going back.

We stayed at the Shangri-La with our 7 month old daughter. It was fantastic! Such a huge resort with lots of space! Our room was great, right on the beach with stunning views of the ocean. We walked right out onto the green grass and palm tress from our room which was about 10metres from the sand. Stunning!!! Good variety of restaurants and even a nightclub for dancing!!!The staff are so lovely and were always so caring towards our baby. The babysitting is so cheap! And the lady that looked after our baby was very warm and friendly and we felt totally at ease with her. There are 3 pools which is great. One big one where there's lots of activity, then there is the adult only pool which is nice and quiet with a poolside bar. Then there is the infinity pool which was just perfect for us. Not very crowded ,baby friendly and absolutley stunning. We would return to the Shangri La again!!!

The room was a beautiful lagoon view room. Breathtaking views from it - of the sunset and of the water. It had beautiful hgih ceilings and very tastefully furnished with deep rich colors.

Unfortunately the resort is outrageusly overpriced and over rated in many respects. It cost us $506 Fiji , to stay there for ONE night! Needless to say we moved on the next day to a more reasonable place. It did however offer a free breakfast buffet from 6.30a.m. to 10 a.m. - checkout times was 12 noon - so there was adequate time to eat breakfast. another "money trap" was the fact that you were not able to pay cash in any of the other bars and restaurants - everything had to be charged to the room. For all guests. Sadly this makes one's checkout bill really over the top!

Because it was school vacation time for a a lot of Australians and New Zealanders - the place was not quiet. Lots of noisy, yelling guests and screaming children. Peace and tranquility were not to be found.

The staff and employees gave wonderful service and help. They appear to be largely unappreciated both by the guests and the mangement. Too bad - as it is these people who make the resort run successfully. The band in the Black Marlin bar was world class - all talented musicians and singers -especially the songstress!

A great family resort. A nice location with spacious grounds. The resort is full of kids - perfect for primary school aged kids. If you are a young single or retired this may not be the best resort for you. The kids club is excellent - especially the evening club where the kids love the kids disco.
The resort is on an island and faces two sides - one faces the ocean. We stayed in an ocean family room (have 3 kids). This side has bigger rooms and is quieter which is good for quiet reading or an afternoon nap. The rooms are closer to the water so have a better view. There is a 30 metre pool here that is 1.5 metres deep in this section of the resort - too deep for preschool kids. The beach here is quite shallow and has coral (white) so not really for swimming.

The other side of the resort faces a bay - the "lagoon side". This side can be more protected from the wind and has a nice but not very wide swimming beach - 80 metres long - not a beach for walking. The lagoon pool is behind this beach. this is the main pool and is very busy with lots of kids. It is not as relaxing and overall a bit hectic and busy. The lagoon rooms are behind this pool, further from the ocean and the view. They are less private and quite. We spent most of the time on this beach - best for swimming and for kids. The ocean side a bit more of a walk from this area but we liked the short walk after lazing everyday and also the quietness.

Now to the food. We have high expectations of food. We go to alot of nice restaurants and my wife is french so food is very important. The food was good. We mainly ate at the buffet lagoon restaurant with the kids. The cold salads and seafood were excellent. Fiji has a large indian population so curries are very good. Overall the best food is cold, curries or freshly cooked - at the buffet e.g. pasta or stirfry. The desserts are great. Best food for lunch is at coral cafe on the ocean side.

Rooms were nice and recently renovated. The resort is clean and tidy and has a quality feel, but is very relaxed.

Overall a great family resort. I would highly recommend it for families with primary school/preschool aged kids.

This was my first overseas trip with friends. (two couples) Travelling from an afternoon flight from Sydney to Nadi, we were all quite excited to reach our destination. We arrived at the resort at 930pm and was greeted by the Fijian staff. We checked in to our lovely and clean lagoon view rooms then had a late dinner at the lagoon terrace. The resort looked so beautiful even at night. Our trip was for 6 nights at the fijian.

Every morning we made our way to the lagoon terrace restaurant for our buffet breakfast. A vast array of food is available for you to indulge. You can easily consume a little too much as my friends and I found out. The lagoon pool is the most popular by far with kids and adults as there's always activities available for you to join in. The daily activity list is available in your room. For a group of young adults we found the place full of things to during the day. There is happy hour in the black marlin and bill bar available every night. It can be very costly if you don't watch what you spend on drinks. We also bought some alcohol duty free so we can indulge in our rooms if we ran out of money for the day. The night club was not busy most nights. It was more crowded on Friday night as they had organized games for people to join in. A really great tip I found whilst reading this forum was to make a habit of paying for your daily expenses the next morning so you can better keep track of what you spend. You can also view your bills on the tv in your room. Just remember to keep your receipts with you.
I also recommend the firedancing show. This was a lot of fun. For 75$FJ you get a buffet dinner and 2hrs of entertainment.

We also spent some time out of the resort. The south sea island day cruise was a great day out. Fiji is such a beautiful country, so we were happy to see some of the sites. There is a tour desk you can visit at the resort which can help you out. We hired a car with driver for the day to travel around nadi and port denarau for shopping. We paid 103$FJ which I thought was good value.

Overall my experience at the Fijian was excellent. I love the people, the scenery, the food. It was a holiday I won't easily forget. I would certainly come back soon. Vinaka

We first visited the Shangri-la in April 2004 whilst I was preganant with my now 4 year old. Thought that it would be a good family destination given the amount of families that were there at the time, and it certainly did not disappoint on that front. We stayed for 5 nights from 9 September to 14 September 2008.

The pools, kids club and resort activities cater really well for children, although the kids menu's could be improved from the standard fried food and spag bol. My daughter loved this place, particularly the pool which we had difficulty extracting her from.

We were able to upgrade our ocean view room to a 1 bedroom executive suite on the lagoon side of the resort, which was absolutely fantastic as my husband and I could share some adult time whilst child slept in the other room. We particularly enjoyed our pre & post dinner drinks on the balcony. I highly recommend both the location and the room for families as you are right in the action but able to enjoy some time to yourselves. There were some issues with gurgling plumbing and our front door banging on windy evenings (prompting the 4 year old to shout in her sleep "well close the door then - alrighty!"), but we soon learnt to ignore these minor annoyances.

On the last night my husband and I enjoyed a lovely dinner in the pavillion overlooking the sea. Absolutely beautiful - just the two of us enjoying a lovely 4 course meal with the most amazing sorbet dessert which was presented inside of an ice teardrop sculpture. It was great to watch the sun go down as we enjoyed some good champagne and fine foods.

Would we go back - yep. But we might try a few more islands first...
