“FABULOUS STAY!”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

We really enjoyed our stay at the Mackenzie Country Inn, we were greeted by lovely service and that extended all through our stay! Looking forward to our next stay! The food in the buffet area as well as the bar menu was AMAZING!

Twizel is not the most exciting place but we needed to spend a night en route from Mount Cook.
The Mackenzie Country Inn is large and impersonal. On the plus side the rooms are large and the linen was spotless. On the minus side the decor is old, tired and in the case of the chairs in our room very worn. Serious refurbishment is needed. Food in the restaurant is OK but overpriced.
Wifi is costly and does not work well in the rooms...especially if you have room 149 which is a long distance from the reception area. Go and sit in the bar to use it or you will spend a fortune waiting for connections.

Room Tip: Get one as close to reception as possible for good wifi.

Seven of us stayed at a night at this gorgeous property, en route, Mt.Cook. It is absolute beauty with large rooms and a very sumptuous breakfast. Very well laid out rooms and a lovely restaurant opposite to its location. One of us had a medical emergency and the doctor with nurse was there in ten minutes. Mt.Cook is only an hour' drive from here and the cost of this accommodation could be only half of the tariffs in Mt.Cook.

Room Tip: All rooms are good facing the main road

Twizel is not the most attractive town in which to spend the night but we were able to get a room in the Mackenzie Country Hotel. The hotel has many good features (rooms are large, large window and guest laundry where washing machine and dryer worked well) and clearly hosts frequent tourist groups, which could be the reason for its worn and tired decorations, fabric and furniture. Message to the owners – “carry-out major refurbishment and you will have a high quality hotel”. The Reception staff were very helpful; sadly, the dining room staff were as dull as the decor and did not keep an eye on the food levels in the salvers so the buffet looked deficient.

Room Tip: We had room 129 which looks across the car park to a garage. Rooms on the other side of building loo...

Old, tired, over priced and not very friendly. We had intended on staying here but due to our poor reception we decided to move on. Maybe stay at the chalet's down the road as we eventually did. Twizel is really a very beautiful area to discover, especially Mount Cook National Park .

Whilst the décor is dated the rooms were large and the beds comfortable. The staff were friendly and efficient and coped well with unexpected tour parties. The Buffet dinner and breakfast would have done any hotel proud.

Landed here as part of a bus tour, where the hotel was chosen for us. Twizel is a road stop with about 6 hotels and a few B&Bs - the Town of Trees was nice to walk through, with a small shopping mall, most of which was closed by 6pm - though we suggest checking out Hunter's Bar and Lodge if there: nice atmosphere, fireplace, interesting menu. The country inn featured nice large rooms in Mission style, with the beautiful light fixtures by the bed a unique highlight. TV was new, our room had two comfortable leather chairs, and two double beds. All was clean and neat, and a small balcony viewed onto a yard with some trees, and the Alps-like snowcapped mountains in the background. Key room problem: beds are way too soft. Dinner at their restaurant was a fine buffet, and the bar area with fireplace was cozy and friendly. Main problem was the Internet access - $5 a day for WiFi, $5 for only one hour on their computer. Trying logging into WiFi, and the login screen doesn't come up, and the WiFi connection keeps dropping. Infuriating - and nothing they can do about it, per the front desk staff. The fitness center is one treadmill, one bicycle, and four sets of dumbbells with no bench - weights are 3, 5, 10, and 15K, so you can get a standing workout if you wish to. No pool, no jacuzzi. If I were this hotel, I'd put a 16-person Jacuzzi on the outside back deck and keep it open til midnight - being able to enjoy that under the stars would make this a much more appealing and outstanding experience, especially with a notable lack of things to do in this small town on a weekday evening. There are enough bus tours coming through to justify the expense. Other hotels in town offer spa tubs, cable, and other amenities. Haven't tried the breakfast yet, but overall, this was good, but could be improved.

Room Tip: Ask for a room viewing the mountains, typically the left side when walking down the hallway from rec...
